Long Beach Press “Telegram; Bill Whitney, Breit- bard Athletic Foundation, San Diego; and W. R f Bill Schroeder, Helms Athletic Foundation; -- BUD WOODWARD, scintillating back- field ace of the Jordan (Long Beach) High School football squad, has been chosen C.I.F. Player of the Year for 1947»

Woodward, a six-foot, 210-pound husky, w h o ■chalked up 94 points under his own power, with 14 touchdowns, and 10 running conversions, and passed to 6 touchdowns, and passed for 3 addition al conversions, adding another 39 points to his scoring register, for 133 points, in all, will receive the Helms Athletic Foundation medal award in recognition of Southern California C.I.F, Player of the Year honors* The Jordan fullback will also have his name en graved upon thr Paul H 0 Helms trophy.

To prove that Bud Woodward was the key man, and then some, ih the Jordan offensive attack, it should be noted that Bud was re sponsible for 133 of the total 153 points collected by the Jordan team during the 1947» It is needless to say that Woodward was chosen for a backfield post on the All-Southern '-'alifornia C.I.F. High School Team.

Others who gained backfield berths on the All-C.I.F. honor squad were Johnny Fouch of Santa Ana, who also gathered in the same laurels in 1946; Santa Monica’s ’passingest man’ Dick Horn, who has 24 touchdown passes to his credit; (prior to the Southern California championship tussle with San Diego) John Olszewski, St. Anthony of Long Beach’s 190-pound package of dynamite; and blocking back A1 Sanbrano of Pomona,

Note: Dick Horn passed to a touchdown in the C.I.F. champion- ■ ship game with San Diego, on December 13th, which Santa Monica won, 13-12, increasing his touchdown-pass mark to 25. .

The 1947 All-Southern California team is blessed with twa of the finest offensive ends to ever gain all-star team ranking — Big Bill McColl-of Hoover, San Diego, and Isaac Jcnes of Santa Monica. McColl, who stands 6 feet, 3 inches in height, and who weighs 205, gathered-in 11 touchdown passes, and 10 paints after touchdown, this year, to give him a total of 76 points* Jones collected 92 points on 14 touchdown passes and B points after © LA84 Foundation. McColl, in addition to collecting touchdown passes, kicked-off for his Hoover squad, defended well, and even passed and punted on occasions.

Two rugged tackles, who excelled throughout the season — Bob Van Doren, b foot, 2 inch, 197 pounder from San Diego, and Lloyd Stringer, 6 foot, 1 inch, 205 pounuer from Santa Paula -- were honored by the Board, Both received rrwny recommendations from coaches and officials throughout Southern California who saw them play.

The guard posts on the All-Southern California team, unusual as it is. is well stocked with Powells. Tom Powell of Pomona, and Owen Powell of South Pasadena, earned the honors.. Both were 5 foot, 10 inch, 190-pound huskies, South Pasadenans Powell was cited for strength booh on offense as well as defense, for his blocking, and point-after-vcuchoowe kick Lng

As he did in 1946. Tommy Garcia of Mark Keppel of Alhambra,• clamped his arms around the center berth» Garcia, a big 6 foot, 2 inch,- 190-pounder, kicked off for his squad, was a bulwark on defense, and backed the line superbly,,

ALL SOUTHERN Ca IIFOHU a BO~HD OF IDOTBALL FOR RELEASE: Ralph Alexander, Los Angeles Examiner Friday Afternoon, Hugh Pir.ney, Los Angeles Herald-Express December 26, 1947, and After Mory Kapp, Los Angeles Daily News John de Ia Vega, Los Angeles Times Bob Emolía, Hollywood Citizen-News Somewhere in the San Fernando Bill Schroeder, Helms Athletic Foundation Valley, near Canoga park, they must have a formula for developing Los Angeles City High School Players of the Year. Or, maybe, that formula is locked up in the mind, or heart, of one Ansel Breni- man, football coach at — for that gridiron tutor has produced throe Players of the Year in the past nine years. His latest is Bill Bowers, who, today, was named Los Angeles City High School Player of the Year for the 1947 season, by members of a 11 Southern California Beard of Football. Members of All Southern California Board cf Football wero impressed, however, with Bowers* feat of carrying Canoga Park to a League title, via 71 points which he scored personally, 12 touchdown passes, and superb kikcing and defensive play. Bowers chalked up more than 1,000 yards on running plays this year, for an average of 9 yards per carry. He was a ball club in himself. In addition to the Canoga j'ark trio, the San Fernando ^alley also claims another Player of the Year, for ’s Ray Woods was chosen for top honors by the Helms Board in 1938, Halms Award For Bill Bowers. .Presenta tion at Los Angeles Basketball Champion- shios, at Olympic Auditorium, Dec, 26,

Ansel Breniman has been coaching high school football in the San Fernando Valley since 1930. COMMENTS: Ray Algorri and Tom Evans, the ends, were sterling pass receivers, and defended well. Algorri scored 4 touchdowns, while Evans collected two. Gerald Perry was an outstanding all-around tackle, using his size and weight to advantage. Wilbur Snyder, the other tackle, was a standout in every game. As a tackle, Snyder, by his alert play, chalked up 2 touchdowns, and registered 19 PATs, for 31 points. Snyder weighed 237, and stood 6* 3", ■ Bob Zelinka, the Fairfax guard, just a 170-pounder, gained All-City honors for the second straight year. He was a fine blocker, and excelled on defense. San Pedro's Fred Grgich was another outstanding guard, and played a prominent part in the Pirates' success. Jimmy Csllino, Lincoln's splendid center, was only a junior, but he performed this year like a three-year veteran. He was big, weighing 210, and smashed every defense he bucked up against. Hugh McElhenny and Bob Cameron provided Washington's Generals with the 1 - 2 punch, and in a big way. McElhenny racked up IS touchdowns for the season, for a total of 108 points, while Cameron flipped touchdowns all over every lot in which he worked. Bob tossed 8 touchdown passes during the regular season, kicked-off 29 times for a 50-yard average, and punted 19 times for a 48-yard average. These two spelled defeat for every team which the Generals met in 1947 — the last being Cathedral, in the City vs. C.I.F, game, at the l.os Angeles Coliseum, which the Generals won, 43 to 21 — McElhenny posting 4 touchdowns as his contribution. Gardena's Donald Bahrman, who was a triple-threat artist in every sense of the word, and only a junior ~ and only a 5-foot, 6-inch, 142-pounder— earned his All-City berth. Bahrman passed to 7 touchdowns, ran to two, (one on a jaunt of 95 yards) and did the punting for his team. The blocking back assignment on the -All-City squad went to Franklin's Bob Laskin, a truly fine all-around player. Laskin, a rugged 165-pound full back, not only blocked to perfection, but carried the ball, as well. Proof of that is the fact that Laskin nicked the scoring register for 65 points. Bill Bowers, the Canoga Park Express, named Player of the Year, gained All-City honors for the second time, being named in 1946.

ALL SOUTHERN CALIiURNLk BOa RD FO FOOTBALL FOR RELEASE: Ralph Alexander, Los Angeles Examiner Tuesday, December 23, 1947 Hugh Binney, Los angeles herald-Express Mory Kapp, Los angeles Daily News John de la vega, Los Angeles Times It wasn’t a fast-stepping Bob panella, Hollywood Citizen-News backfield ace, but, instead, a Bill Schroeder, Helms Athletic Foundation hard-charging linesman, BOB ZELINKA Fairfax High School guard, who was chosen Western League Player of the Year for the 1947 season. It was a fine honor for a deserving athlete, which members of a 11 Southern California gave to Zelinka. Zelinka wasn*t any man-mountain for size, but he surely operated that way when he bucked up against opposing linesmen of tte Western circuit. Zelinka, who stood 5 feet, 7 inches in height, and who weighed 170, was fast, and a ter rificallyhard charger. He was afine tackier, alert and an inspirational leader. The Western League Player of the Year, naturally, nabbed a post on the all-star team, at guard. Four other members of the Fairfax High School squad were chosen for All Western league honors, making five in all. (including Zelinka) Other Colonials to collect laurels were Bud Blair, and; Jerry Finkelstein, tackle; Tom Kemp, and Charles Essegian, backs. Finkelstein, a 205-pounaer, was the heaviest man to he chosen for honors. In fact, ho was the only 200-pounder on the scuad. The All-Western League outfit was a light one. Four members cf the team weighed in under the 160-pOund mark. Smallest was Venice's little scat-back, Arthur Yowell, who d;nted the scales at only 130. Don Haddad, Dorsey end, weighed hut 148; Fairfax’s end, Bud Blair, weighed hut 155, while Dorsey's speedy hack, Billy Greenberg, could claim but 145, Top scorer of the All-Western was Dorsey’s Douglas Barnette, who had 38 points to his credit. Barnette, who weighed 180, alternated at fullback and halfback, and averaged better than 5 yards per carry. Hamilton's fine center, Dominick Amorelli, who weighed 175, was praised highly by the Board, and was considered for Player of the Year honors. Hollywood's Foothillers didn't place any on the All-Western first team, but were recognized with three berths on the second team — going to johnny Marches, tackle; John Jonigian, guard; and Gary Hathaway, back.

Members cf All Southern California Board of Football didn't give a second thought to the selection, so outstanding was Bowers. The Canoga Park flash, who gained All-City honors last year, ran up more than a thousand yards on running plays,, averaging over 9 yards per carry. Bowers, of course, gained a spot in the backfield of the All-San Fernando Vaxiey League squad. . Others who lined up with Bowers in the All-San ernando Valley backfield were Van Nuys* Bob Meyers, a 170-pounder who excelled in all departments of play; Eagle Rock's Carbys Gleason, who rolled up 60 points on 10 touchdowns; Canoga Park's little 152-pound Dick Reilly; and Van Nuys* fine blocking back, Gene “ Martinson. Heaviest man on the All-San Fernando Valley squad was Wilbur Snyder, huge 237-pound Van Nuys tackle, Snyder registered 31 points during the year, collecting a couple of touchdowns and 19 points after touchdown. Next heaviest Valley all-star was Jack Swan of San ^ernando, who tipped the beam at 200. Four juniors gained places on the All-San Fernando team. They wsre Jack Reaves, Canoga Park end; Jack Swan, San Farnancio tackle; Bruce Bell, North Holly wood guard; and Armond Licht, Eagle Rook guard. Van Nuys captured most of the berths on the All-San Fernando Valley mythical aggregation, nabbing five assignments, Canoga Park followed with 3. Jack Reaves, Canoga Park wingman, ard Dick Iteilly, Ganoga Park back, were the two lightest men on the squad. Reaves weighed in at 154, while Reilly barely came in at 152»
