References ................................................................................................................................. 53 Abstract This report is a part of trilateral project of the Volkswagen Stiftung, which aims at strengthening cross border cooperation, confidence, understanding and maintenance of the dialogue between scientific institutions and public authorities from Russia, Ukraine and countries of the EU. The project intends a transnational analysis of three river catchments: the Western Bug (shared by Ukraine, Belarus and the EU), the River Desna (shared by Russia and Ukraine) and the Western Dvina (shared by Russia, Belarus and the EU) (Figure 1). Water quality problems that need to be dealt with in a transboundary setting are the connective element of these basins. Figure 1. Overview of the transboundary river basins This report aims at I) a literature review on national and international publications, II) expert talks on all relevant issues of an Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and on political disputes in Ukraine, Russia and the EU, III) an assessment of the hydrological, hydro-morphological, geochemical and ecological state of the rivers and their basins, including the consideration of ecosystem services and IV) an identification of important stressors onto the water system, including point and diffuse pollutant sources and changing boundary conditions. Chapter 1. General information about investigated basins 1.1 General features in the XXI century The three transboundary catchments represent distinctive environmental and socio- economic patterns. The smallest catchment Western Bug has the largest population (Figure 2). The ratio of urban to rural population varies from 43.5 % in Polish part of Western Bug catchment to 95,6 % in Russian part of Desna River (Table 1), which is an evidence of drastic socio-economic changes in the traditionally rural area of Bryansk Oblast in Russia. Vegetation mosaic (forest, shrubland, grassland, cropland) and cropland-forest mosaic dominates in Western Bug and Desna rivers, whereas broadleaved forest is the main land use class in Western Dvina Basin. Lithuania and Estonia have small shares of Western Dvina catchment (Table 1, Figure 3). Topography and geology The basin has mainly flat and wavy plain topography. River valley have been formed approximately 12-13 thousands years ago. Relatively high drainage density and mostly grey forest soils explain the low rates of infiltration losses. Figure 3: Middle part of Western Dvina river near Velizh (Russian Federation) Climate and hydrology The climate of the Western Dvina river basin is temperate moderately continental. In Russian part, the average temperature in January ranges from −6 °C in southwestern part until −10 °C in the northeastern part. Temperatures in July range between +17 and +19 °C. Average annual precipitation is 650 mm. Climate in Latvia is characterized by wet and mild summers (18,2 °C, 85mm) (Second assessment…, 2011). The total length of the river is 1020 km: 325 km in Russia, 338 km in Belarus and 317 km in Latvia. Western Dvina originates from the lake Ohvat, flows in South-West direction and downstream of the city Vitebsk in North-West direction. Information about total catchment area differs between sources: 87000 km² (International river basins…2006), 85600 km² (Resources…1975). According to our analyses based on SRTM v.4 Hydrosheds 30s, total catchment area was estimated to 85900 km². Average annual water discharge into the sea is 20700 mln m3 (656 m³/s), annual nitrogen flux is 40600 tons and phosphorus flux 1400 tons (International river basins… 2006). Maximal discharges are observed in spring due to snow melting and spring rainfalls. Soils There are eight soil classes in the catchment according to Unified State Soil Registry (Harmonized World Soil Database) (Table 2). It consists of the following rivers and canals: Vistula, Bug (new canal to be built), Mukhavets, Pina, Pripyat and Dnieper. The reconstruction plans of the E40 mention building a bypass canal in Poland, six or seven dams and locks in the Pripyat, as well as dredging on the entire route so that multitonnage river-sea vessels can follow the course of the rivers. The biggest part of the capital investments (around EUR 12 billion) is directed to the Polish section of the route Vistula—Brest. The Belarusian section has been preliminarily estimated at EUR 150 million.     2.5 Ukraine Waterways Assessment Ukraine has high potential navigable rivers - over 4 thousand km: there are traditional waterways Dnipro - 1,205 km and its tributaries (Desna- 520 km, Pripyat - 60 km) and Dunay - 160 km, Bug - 155 km, and other so-called small rivers. Dnipro River and its major tributaries Desna and Pripyat carried out to 90% of total transport. The remaining 10% are Dunai and other rivers (Desna, Dniester, Southern Bug, Seversky Donets, Ingulets, Vorskla, etc.). Since Ukraine gained independence in 1991, length of river waterways decreased almost twice (from 4 thousand. Km to 2.1 thousand. Km). The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of forest mensuration characteristics and health condition of pine and mixed pine-birch stands planted on formerly arable lands and cutover areas after pine stands infected by annosum root rot. It was found that in pine stands planted on formerly arable land, the average diameter of living trees in the root rot disease focus was 1–6% larger and the average diameter of dead trees was 11–23% larger than those outside the disease focus. Due to the pathological loss inside the disease foci, the pine stand density was much lower – by 14–38% and the growing stock volume was 16–35% less as compared to the outside areas. Mixed pine-birch stands (with a pre- dominance of pine trees), established on the cutover areas after pine stands affected by root rot, had a 20% greater stock volume and the birch-pine stands (with birch predominance) in the clear-cuts had 18% greater stock volume than pure pine stands inside the root rot disease area.

This preliminary assessment is an intermediate product that deals with major transboundary rivers discharging from Eastern Europe and the Caucasus into the Black Sea and some of their transboundary tributaries. 2. Based on the countries’ responses to the datasheets 1 and data available from other sources, only a very limited number of watercourses have been dealt with so far as shown in the table below. The other watercourses will be included in the updated version to be submitted to the sixth Ministerial Conference “Environment for Europe” (Belgrade, October 2007).     16 Canadio-Byzantina 23 (January 2012) REPORTS Excavations at Baturyn in 2011 During the summer of 2011 the Canada-Ukraine archaeological expedition resumed its annual excavations in Baturyn, Chernihiv province, Ukraine. The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS), the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (PIMS) in Toronto, and the Shevchenko Scientific Society of America (SSS-A) co-sponsor the project. Prof. Zenon Kohut, Director of CIUS, heads this undertaking; Prof. Orest Popovych, President of SSS-A, is its patron and academic adviser; Dr. Volodymyr Kovalenko, University of Chernihiv, leads the expedition. Dr. Volodymyr Mezentsev (CIUS), Prof. Martin Dimnik (PIMS), and Huseyin Oylupinar, Ph.D.candidate (University of Alberta), are also engaged in the excavation and the publication of its findings. The 2011 expedition recruited 75 students and scholars from the universities and museums of Chernihiv, Nizhyn, Kyiv, Sumy, Baturyn, Hlukhiv, Melitopol, Chernivtsi in Ukraine, and Toronto and Edmonton in Canada. From 1669 to 1708, Baturyn was the capital of the Cossack Hetman state that reached its zenith under the rule of the enlightened Hetman Ivan Mazepa (1687-1709). In alliance with Sweden he attempted to liberate central Ukraine from increasing Moscow domination but the Russian army suppressed his insurrection and destroyed Baturyn in 1708. This year’s expedition continued excavating the remnants of Mazepa’s fortified court located in the Baturyn suburb of Honcharivka. Around 1699 he commissioned the erection of the three-story masonry palace; it was unrivalled in the Cossack realm and became his principal residence. Archaeological and architectural investigations of the palace’s remnants in 2003-10 have established that it was built and adorned in a mature Vilnius (Wilno) Baroque style and enriched with the ornate polychrome glazed ceramic revetments of the Kyivan Baroque style.
