Hamilton Red Wings Relocate to Markham FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HAMILTON RED WINGS RELOCATE TO MARKHAM “Hamilton Red Wings to Compete as the Markham Royals Beginning in 2015-16 OJHL Season” April 29, 2015, Mississauga, Ontario – The Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) and the Hamilton Red Wings, in partnership with the City of Markham, today announced that the hockey club has been relocated to Markham, Ontario and will compete as the Markham Royals beginning with the 2015-16 OJHL season. Red Wings’ Governor Stuart Hyman received approval from the OJHL Board of Governors and the Ontario Hockey Association’s Board of Directors last week to relocate the team to Markham. The club will play out of the Markham Centennial Arena, located within Centennial Community Centre at 8600 McCowan Road. Along with the relocation, the team will shift from the OJHL’s West Division and now compete in the North Division. Hyman made the request after public announcements outlining that the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) approved a team, the Hamilton Bulldogs, to play out of Hamilton. "We are thrilled to be a part of bringing an OJHL team back to Markham,” said Hyman. “The city has a rich and storied junior hockey tradition. The Mayor and everyone from the City have been fantastic to work with and very supportive. We are very appreciative for the opportunity to carry on this proud tradition with the rebirth of the Markham Royals Junior Hockey Club. It will be an honour to wear Markham's famous colours and help kids achieve their dreams of playing college and pro hockey." “The arrival of Junior ‘A’ hockey back to Markham is great news and we’re thrilled to welcome the Red Wings Junior ‘A’ organization to our community,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “The new Markham Royals Junior ‘A’ Hockey Club will be joining a well-established hockey community known for producing over sixty NHL players including Steve Stamkos, Steve Thomas, Brad May, Mike Zigomanis, Cody Hodgson, Jeff Skinner, Mike Palmateer, Hockey Hall of Fame Honoured Members Syl Apps and Adam Oates. We’re confident the Markham Royals Junior ‘A’ team will carry on that tradition of hockey excellence.” About the City of Markham Markham, a municipality with more than 345,000 residents centrally located in the Greater Toronto area, is home to more than 400 corporate head offices and more than 1,100 high tech and life science companies. • Winless Streak Hits Double Digits for Aurora Tigers
This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Wed Oct 6 12:43:26 2021 / +0000 GMT Winless streak hits double digits for Aurora Tigers By Jake Courtepatte Having run out of player cards long before the Ontario Junior Hockey League trade deadline, the Aurora Tigers are now just running out the clock. While last Tuesday's deadline came and went with other York Region teams bolstering their rosters for the postseason, Aurora has resigned to miss the playoffs for the first time in six seasons by acquiring cash and some potential for the future. The resulting team of call-ups and younger players fell to both the North York Rangers and Oakville Blades over the weekend, with the Tigers still searching for their first win of the New Year. With both the Rangers and Blades destined for the playoffs with seeding implications on the line, the Rangers first shutout the Tigers at the Aurora Community Centre by a score of 4 ? 0. Forcing goaltender Brayden Lachance to face 54 shots in the game, North York's Ture Linden continued his torrid scoring pace by beating Lachance three times, finishing a natural hat trick just under a minute into the third period. Noah Robinson rounded out the scoring just two minutes later, while Aurora managed just sixteen shots in total on the North York net. The Blades, tops in the OJHL's South division and the second highest scoring team in the conference, disposed of the Tigers the following day 5 ? 2 at the ACC. Oakville scored twice on the powerplay, with the Tigers combining for 31 penalty minutes in the game.

  • Packed House Welcomes Surviving Broncos to Hometown Hockey
This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Fri Sep 24 21:38:53 2021 / +0000 GMT Packed house welcomes surviving Broncos to Hometown Hockey By Jake Courtepatte Sometimes, hockey is more than just a game. That was the sentiment shared by Ryan Straschnitzki, one of a handful of former Humboldt Broncos players to make the trip to Aurora for last weekend's Hometown Hockey event, before the Aurora Tigers game Saturday night hosting the Newmarket Hurricanes. ?It's about adversity, friendships relationships?it teaches you life lessons as well. When you face adversity, it's how you overcome that and what you're going to do next.? The positive attitudes, and the overall enormity of their story on that fateful day in April was a major reason for a sold-out crowd of 1,400 fans to pack the Aurora Community Centre for the matchup between the longtime rivals, where the Broncos and their family were honoured with a pre-game standing ovation. Crowds lined up outside the ACC starting around 6 p.m. for the 7:30 puck drop, a sight not seen in decades for the Junior A club. Once inside, and with the puck dropped, the rink turned into a time machine with the atmosphere akin to that of the glory days of junior hockey decades ago. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the on-ice product came up short in front of plenty of fresh faces, falling to their Yonge Street rivals by a score of 5 ? 1. Yet the game still provided plenty of entertainment by two clubs stirred up by emotion from the large crowd.

  • Tigers Even up with Royals After Fifth Straight Win
This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Mon Oct 4 16:25:20 2021 / +0000 GMT Tigers even up with Royals after fifth straight win By Jake Courtepatte The Trenton Golden Hawks may be consistently ranked among the top teams in Canadian Junior Hockey, but that is of no concern to the Aurora Tigers. Aurora went into the Trenton barn on Friday and put seven pucks into the opposing net, prompting a goalie change shortly into the third period after their third straight. Leading the charge in the 7 ? 4 victory was captain Daniel Mantenuto with two goals, as well as the new/old face of defenceman Noah Delmas. A staple on the blue line for the Tigers for the past two seasons, the Niagara University-bound Delmas spent most of this season with the USHL's Bloomington Thunder, putting up a goal and an assist in seventeen games. Returning to Canadian junior hockey has done wonders to Delmas' game, adding a goal and two assists in the win over Trenton to bring his total to five points through five games this season with the Tigers. He put up an impressive 42 points in a full season with the Tigers last year. ?We knew what we were getting [with Delmas],? said general manager and head coach Thomas Milne. ?He's been in this locker room before and we knew he was well liked. We're happy to have him back.? Aurora sent defenceman Alex Boudreau to the Whitby Fury to make room for Delmas on the roster. In Lindsay for a late afternoon clash the next day with the Muskies, the Tigers kept rolling, with JD Falconer opening the scoring at the midway point of the first period.
