"Lamanites" and the Spirit of the Lord
"Lamanites" and the Spirit of the Lord Eugene England EDITORS' NOTE: This issue of DIALOGUE, which was funded by Dora Hartvigsen England and Eugene England Sr., and their children and guest-edited by David J. Whittaker, has been planned as an effort to increase understanding of the history of Mor- mon responses to the "Lamanites" — native peoples of the Americas and Poly- nesia. We have invited Eugene England, Jr., professor of English at BYU, to document his parents' efforts, over a period of forty years, to respond to what he names "the spirit of Lehi" — a focused interest in and effort to help those who are called Lamanites. His essay also reviews the sources and proper present use of that term (too often used with misunderstanding and offense) and the origins and prophesied future of those to whom it has been applied. y parents grew up conditioned toward racial prejudice — as did most Americans, including Mormons, through their generation and into part of mine. But something touched my father in his early life and grew con- stantly in him until he and my mother were moved at mid-life gradually to consecrate most of their life's earnings from then on to help Lamanites. I wish to call what touched them "the spirit of Lehi." It came in its earliest, somewhat vague, form to my father when he left home as a seventeen-year-old, took a job as an apprentice Union Pacific coach painter in Pocatello, Idaho, and — because he was still a farmboy in habits and woke up each morning at five — read the Book of Mormon and The Discourses of Brigham Young in his lonely boarding room. -

Faulring During the two and a half years (1831-1833) the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lived in Jackson County, Missouri, they struggled to establish a Zion community. In July 1831, the Saints were commanded by revelation to gather to Jackson County because the Lord had declared that this area was “the land of promise” and designat- ed it as “the place for the city of Zion” (D&C 57:2). During this period, the Mormon settlers had problems with their immediate Missourian neighbors. Much of the friction resulted from their religious, social, cultural and eco- nomic differences. The Latter-day Saint immigrants were predominantly from the northeastern United States while the “old settlers” had moved to Missouri from the southern states and were slave holders. Because of the Missouri Compromise of 1820, Missouri was a slave state. Eventually, by mid-July 1833, a militant group of Jackson County Missourians became intolerant of the Mormons and began the process of forcefully expelling them from the county.1 And yet in spite of these mounting hostilities, a little-known aspect of the Latter-day Saints’ stay in Jackson County is that during this time, the Mormon elders were allowed to perform civil marriages. In contrast to the legal difficulties some of the elders faced in Ohio, the Latter-day Saint priest- hood holders were recognized by the civil authorities as “preachers of the gospel.”2 Years earlier, on 4 July 1825, Missouri enacted a statute entitled, “Marriages. -

Perkins On 17 July1846, one day after Captain James Allen had mustered in the Mormon Battalion, U.S. Army of the West, Brigham Young called eighty- nine bishops1 to look after the wives and families of the Mormon Battalion.2 Among the group called were Ute Perkins (1816–1901), a thirty-year-old member of seven years, his uncles, William G. Perkins and John Vance, and his first cousin, Andrew H. Perkins. Until Nauvoo, the Church’s two general bishops, Bishop Newel K. Whitney in Kirtland and Bishop Edward Partridge in Missouri, bore as their major responsibility the challenge to care for the poor and needy. In Nauvoo, in addition to the general bishops, the Church initiated the prac- tice of assigning bishops to aid the poor within Nauvoo’s municipal wards— hence the beginnings of ward bishops. During the trek west, as the calling of these eighty-nine bishops shows, the commitment to calling local bishops to care for small membership groupings was underway and became enough of an established practice that in Utah it became standard Church administra- tive practice—a presiding bishopric at the general level and ward bishops at the local level. Therefore, study of the bishops’ work during the Winter Quarters period deserves historical attention, to which effort the following material contributes.3 Ute Perkins lived in a temporary Mormon encampment called Pleasant Valley, where his father Absalom was the branch president. -

Orson came to see the Prophet Joseph Smith at the Peter Whitmer log home in western New York the following month of October and later reflected: “It was a very interesting period of my life, when but nine- teen years of age, to visit the place where this Church was organized—the room of old father Whitmer—where the Lord spoke to His servant Joseph and others, as printed in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants. -

The Murdock LDS Academy in Beaver, Utah
Griffiths: Life at a Church Academy 29 Life at a Church Academy: The Murdock LDS Academy in Beaver, Utah Casey Paul Griffiths Nestled at the base of the Tushar Mountains is the small Southern Utah community of Beaver. Because it is located next to an Interstate highway, visitors quickly passing by might notice an eclectic collection of older look- ing homes, geological formations, or community identifiers like the large “B” which graces the side of the most prominent mountain near the town. As with many small American towns in years past, the life of the community often revolved around the local high school. Yet many of the older citizens in Beaver sometimes refer to another school, the Murdock Academy, which flourished in the town nearly a century earlier. They speak of the school in more revered tones than the local high school, since it wasn’t just a high school, but an LDS academy, a Church-sponsored institution of learning that straddled the border between secondary education and college-level academ- ics. With proud affection local residents remember a time when Beaver wasn’t just another rest stop along the I-15 corridor, but a center of learning for all of the communities in the surrounding counties. They also recall fondly a time when the academy wasn’t just the center of a single community, but a beacon that drew the finest youth from all over the southern portion of the state. The fog of seventy years’ distance makes the memories vague, but the spirit of the academy still lingers in the community.
