Preliminary List of Tylenchida (Nematoda) Associated with Olive in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Regions of Turkey Nematol. medit. (2001), 29: 145-147 plant Protection Central Research Institute, 06172 Yenimahalle-Ankara, Turkey PRELIMINARY LIST OF TYLENCHIDA (NEMATODA) ASSOCIATED WITH OLIVE IN THE BLACK SEA AND THE MEDITERRANEAN REGIONS OF TURKEY by i. KEPENEK<,;:i Summary. In a nematode survey of Tylenchida carried out in olive orchards in northern (The Black Sea Re gion) and southern (The Mediterranean Region) of Turkey 32 species were determined belonging to 23 genera of eight families within the superfamilies Tylenchoidea, Dolichodoroidea, Hoplolaimoidea, Tylenchuloidea, Criconematoidea, Hemicycliophoroidea and Anguinoidea. Each of them constitute new records on olive in Turkey and Tylenchorhynchus penniseti and Paratylenchus arculatus are reported for the first time in the ne matofauna of Turkey. There is little information on the occurrence described by Hooper (1986a). In addition, root of plant parasitic nematodes in Turkey and par and stem samples were taken from diseased ticularly with regard to olive orchards. This plants and treated according to the method of study was undertaken to determine the Ty Stemerding (Hooper 1986b), for mobile nema lenchida species associated with olive (Olea eu todes or submitted to centrifugal flotation, for ropaea L.) trees in the northern (The Black Sea) sedentary nematodes. • Is the Turkish Cypriot Population Shrinking?
CYPRUS CENTRE 2/2007 REPORT 2/2007 Is the Turkish Cypriot Population Shrinking? Shrinking? Cypriot Population Turkish Is the The demography of north Cyprus is one of the most contested issues related to the island’s division. In particular, the number of indigenous Turkish Cypriots and Turkish immigrants living in the north has long been a source of dispute, not only among the island’s diplomats and politicians but also among researchers and activists. Until recently, the political use of demog- raphy has hindered comprehensive study of the ethno-demographic make-up of the north, while at the same time making a thorough demographic study all the more imperative. The present report addresses this situation by providing an analysis of the results of the 2006 census of north Cyprus, comparing these fi gures with the results of the previous census. The report focuses mainly on identifying the percentage of the population of north Cyprus who are of Turkish-mainland origin and also possess Turkish Cypriot citizenship – an important factor given claims that such citizens play an signifi cant role in elections in the north. In addi- tion, the report examines the arrival dates of Turkish nationals in order to analyze patterns of migration. This, in turn, is indicative of the numbers of naturalized Turkish Cypriot citizens who have arrived in Cyprus as part of an offi cial policy. The report also presents estimates for Turkish Cypriot emigration to third countries, based on immigration and census fi gures from the two main host countries: the United Kingdom and Australia. Following analysis of these latter fi gures and the results of the 2006 census, it is argued that claims of massive emigration by Turkish Cypriots to third countries are largely misleading.

The Role of the Tobacco Trade in Turkish-American Relations, 1923-29 by Robert Carey Goodman III Candidate for the Master of Arts in History University of Richmond, 1987 Thesis Director: John D. Treadway This study of the tobacco trade between Turkey and the United States provides new perspectives on two major themes in Turkish-American relations between 1923 and 1929: the effect of Turkish nationalism on American interests in Ataturk's Turkey, and the effort to restore Turkish- American diplomatic ties broken during World War I. The marked rise in American cigarette consumption after World War I made the tobacco trade a crucial link between Turkey and America because it required the importation of aromatic tobacco. During the Turkish Republic's first decades, the value of American tobacco imports from Turkey exceeded the value of all American exports to that country. The tobacco trade survived Turkish nationalism and unsatisfactory diplomatic relations because of the financial benefits it brought to both states.

  • Family Tylenchidae (Nematoda): an Overview and Perspectives
Organisms Diversity & Evolution (2019) 19:391–408 https://doi.org/10.1007/s13127-019-00404-4 ORIGINAL ARTICLE Family Tylenchidae (Nematoda): an overview and perspectives Xue Qing1 & Wim Bert1 Received: 7 February 2019 /Accepted: 11 May 2019 /Published online: 29 May 2019 # Gesellschaft für Biologische Systematik 2019 Abstract Nematodes in the Tylenchidae family are one of the most important soil-inhabiting species, yet little is known about this intriguing group. The present review examines newly collected samples of Tylenchidae from worldwide sources as well as slides from museum collections. Together with all available literature, detailed morphology among genera are summarized and com- pared, allowing us to explore the importance of each morphological character in a phylogenetic framework. An updated phylogeny inferred from concatenated 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA dataset is reconstructed; the results suggest that not all didelphic genera may be included in Tylenchidae. In fact, our analyses suggest Tylenchidae should be split into several families, although their phylogeny has not yet fully been resolved. Currently, the Tylenchidae family comprises 44 genera and 412 nominal species; however, diversity estimations for the group ranged from 2000 to 10,000 species, meaning that 75–95% of the species remains undiscovered. This is partially because the biased sampling in agro-ecosystems with most Tylenchidae may present in neglected habitats. Finally, we discussed current difficulties in morphology, taxonomy, and molecular phylogeny research of Tylenchidae and the need for multi-gene phylogeny or phylogenomic approaches to resolve the deep phylogeny in Tylenchidae. Keywords Nematode . Phylogeny . Taxonomy . Tylenchoidea . Tylenchomorpha Introduction their small body size and lack of clearly homologous charac- ters prevent us from deriving a consistent systematic frame- Tylenchidae is one of the most important soil-inhabiting nem- work.

  • Nematoda: Tylenchina) W
Journal of Nematology 38(3):362–375. 2006. © The Society of Nematologists 2006. The Comparative Cellular Architecture of the Female Gonoduct Among Tylenchoidea (Nematoda: Tylenchina) W. Bert,M.Claeys,G.Borgonie Abstract: The cellular architecture of the female gonoduct of 68 nematode populations representing 42 species belonging to Tylenchidae, Belonolaimidae, Hoplolaimidae and Meloinema is shown to have an overall similarity in cellular gonoduct structure. The oviduct consists of two rows of four cells; the spermatheca is comprised of 10 to 20 cells, and the uterus cells, except in the case of Psilenchus, are arranged in four (Tylenchidae) or three (Belonolaimidae, Hoplolaimidae and Meloinema) regular rows. Although the genus Meloinema is classified within Meloidogynidae, its spermatheca is clearly hoplolaimid-like and lacks the spherical shape with lobe-like protruding cells typical of Meloidogyne. Detailed morphology of expelled gonoducts may provide a valuable character set in phylogenetic analysis, and the cellular morphology of the spermatheca appears to be a distinguishing feature at species level, especially in the genera Tylenchus and Geocenamus. Ultrastructural data on the oviduct-spermatheca region of Meloidogyne incognita complement light-microscopic (LM) results. The combination of LM of expelled organs and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on selected sections is put forward as a powerful tool to combine three-dimensional knowledge with ultrastructural detail. Key words: Belonolaimidae, electron microscopy, gonoduct,
