Harp has a special notation at beginning of work and end, marked by glissandi. The left hand Jökulsárlón lightly mutes the strings while the right hand lightly glisses in range indicated (unmetered). for Harpverk The effect is of a distant, whispered, and uneven muffled gliss. Harp, Percussion, and fixed media electronics Percussion: Vibraphone, gong or small tam-tam, low and medium toms, suspended cymbal, by Nathan Hall sizzle cymbal, canister shaker; hard and soft yarn mallets, gong mallet, wire brushes. Percussion also requires reverbed mics, mounted closely to toms and shaker. May 2013 Duration: 10 minutes Each system on score represents one minute of time (Whole notes usually equal roughly 5-7 seconds). Dashed lines divide the systems at approximately 30” intervals. Accidentals carry through 30-second ‘measures’ unless cancelled. When more rhythmic passages occur, sug- gested tempo is given, but does not last beyond particular passage. PERCUSSION MAP Notes are played in relation to position within time. General cues in electronics are on lowest staff. Shaker (canister, lower sound, not an egg) Electronics are a minimal backing track, prominent the most at beginning and end. Volume Sizzle Cymbal level need not be great for the backing track to be effective. Suspended cymbal Toms: low and medium PROGRAM NOTES Gong/small tam-tam Jökulsárlón was written on request of Harpverk, Iceland’s resident duo of harp and percussion. The piece abstractly recalls the sounds of Iceland’s famous glacial lagoon, as ice- bergs calve off of the glacier and float slowly out to sea. Birds come and go and the occassion- al ocean wave is heard in the distance. The overall impression of the place is one of a mysteri- ous and timeless stillness, even though every day the scenery is different and changing. Earliest accounts of the presence of the vibraphone and vibraphone players can be found in American Vaudeville from the early 1900s; then found shortly thereafter in jazz bands as early as the 1930s, and on the classical concert stage beginning in 1949. Three Pieces for Vibraphone, Opus 27, composed by James Beale in 1959, is the first solo concert piece written exclusively for the instrument. Since 1959, there have been over 690 pieces written for solo concert vibraphone, which stands as evidence of the popularity of both the instrument and the genre of solo concert literature. Christopher Deane has contributed to solo vibraphone repertoire with works that are regarded as staples in the genre. Deane’s compositions for vibraphone consistently expand the technical and musical potential of the instrument.

Each measure of music lasts approximately 6 seconds. (Note: these lines are also used as glissandi and pitch bends for the Piccolo and Viola, and bowed sections for the percussion). Quarter Tones- Sixth Tones- Piccolo- Whistle Tone- The fingered pitch is at the bottom. Although the fingered pitch and sounded pitch are always notated as a 'D' it is preferred that the performer attempts to allow different partials to randomly occur each time this figure is performed, which is dependant on the corresponding dynamic level. Oscillating Pitch- A wavy symbol is used to indicate the whistle tone pitch. The pitch should oscillate between different partials, depending on the corresponding dynamic level. Pitch bends- In most instances microtonal changes are accomplished through pitch bends with the embouchure. "Roar" fluttertongue- when indicated produce the "roar" effect. Percussion (Crotales, Vibraphone, Marimba)- Crotales- The highest octave of crotales should be used for this composition. If not available, the next octave down is acceptable, but the performer will have to transpose the pitches one octave down from what is written in the score. The Marimba is notated only in bass clef on one staff. The Vibraphone and Crotales are notated on the staff above the marimba. Pitches on the staff will either be marked as (V) for Vibraphone or (C) for Crotales.
