Israel and Overseas: Israeli Election Primer 2015 (As of, January 27, 2015) Elections In Israel, elections for the Knesset are held at least every four years. As is frequently the case, the outgoing government coalition collapsed due to disagreements between the parties. As a result, the Knesset fell significantly short of seeing out its full four year term. Knesset elections in Israel will now be held on March 17, 2015, slightly over two years since the last time that this occurred. The Basics of the Israeli Electoral System All Israeli citizens above the age of 18 and currently in the country are eligible to vote. Voters simply select one political party. Votes are tallied and each party is then basically awarded the same percentage of Knesset seats as the percentage of votes that it received. So a party that wins 10% of total votes, receives 10% of the seats in the Knesset (In other words, they would win 12, out of a total of 120 seats). To discourage small parties, the law was recently amended and now the votes of any party that does not win at least 3.25% of the total (probably around 130,000 votes) are completely discarded and that party will not receive any seats. (Until recently, the “electoral threshold,” as it is known, was only 2%). For the upcoming elections, by January 29, each party must submit a numbered list of its candidates, which cannot later be altered. So a party that receives 10 seats will send to the Knesset the top 10 people listed on its pre-submitted list.

  • Stalled Arab Peace Initiative Reaffirmed | the Washington Institute
MENU Policy Analysis / PolicyWatch 2074 Stalled Arab Peace Initiative Reaffirmed by David Makovsky May 1, 2013 ABOUT THE AUTHORS David Makovsky David Makovsky is the Ziegler distinguished fellow at The Washington Institute and director of the Koret Project on Arab-Israel Relations. Brief Analysis If it is to be a catalyst for action, the API will require a more direct approach with Israel. Post-publication update: Secretary of State John Kerry hailed the move of the Arab League delegation as “a very big step forward.” In Israel, the reaction was more mixed. Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu made his first visit to the Foreign Ministry since also assuming the position of foreign minister in the new government. In his remarks, he stated that peace with the Palestinians was important so that Israel could avoid being a “binational state.” Yet he made no reference to the Arab League statement. Other officials, on background, termed it a "suggestion" and asserted that Israeli-Palestinian talks should be based on no preconditions. However, two cabinet ministers did offer support: Justice Minister Tzipi Livni said, “It is important for the Palestinians to know that they have the support of the Arab world for a negotiated peace agreement that ends the conflict,” adding “it’s imperative for the Israeli public to know that peace with the Palestinians means peace with the entire Arab world.” Science Minister Yaakov Peri, a member of Yair Lapid’s “There Is a Future” Party and former head of the Shin Bet, expressed support that the landswap idea could restore prospects for peace and enable Israel to retain settlement blocs.

The Rebbe opened with some questions about my personal background. At that time Yitzchak Shamir was prime minister, heading a right-wing government, and the Rebbe asked gently if my more left-wing background presented problems for me. I understood that the Rebbe’s question was a very fundamental one, albeit worded very diplomatically; in effect, he was asking: “Are politics influencing your agency?” I assured the Rebbe that my agency was completely apolitical, with Jews holding different world views serving alongside each other with great professionalism and with total focus on their mission. fter I was appointed as the head of Shin Bet, also known as Shabak — Israel’s internal secret Another interesting question that the Rebbe asked me Aservice agency — I was sent to the United States touched upon the great aliyah of over a million Jews as part of the extensive intelligence cooperation effort from the Soviet republics. We were heartened to see the signatures of 191 members of the House of Representatives on this letter raising their voices in disapproval of unilateral annexation of West Bank territory and warning about its potential dangers. Along with our 300 colleagues at Commanders for Israel’s Security (CIS), all retired IDF generals as well as Mossad, Shin Bet, and Israel Police equivalents, we have been at the forefront of opposition to any unilateral annexation, large or small. We thus consider your important letter an expression of true friendship for Israel and concern for our country’s security and wellbeing. Many of us were among the 25 former senior Israeli security officers who on August 27, 2019 wrote to members of the House of Representatives to express appreciation for the reiteration of support for a negotiated two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as encapsulated in H.
