Alumni Schools Committee - Looking Forward

With your help and support, the ASC interviewed 100% of applicants from our region last year (67 early and 395 regular). We expect similar numbers this season, if not more, and need your help to achieve 100%. In addition to helping the University, interviewing gives you a chance to catch up with other alumni over breakfast/lunch and to meet some truly outstanding high school students. Here are the dates and locations for our interviewing sessions this year:

Date & Time: Location: Date & Time: Location: Saturday, Nov. 9 (AM only) Arnall Golden Gregory Saturday, January 4 (all day) King & Spalding Saturday, Nov. 16 (AM only) Arnall Golden Gregory Saturday, January 11 (all day) King & Spalding Saturday, January 25 (all day) King & Spalding Saturday, February 15 (all day) King & Spalding

If you can help out any of those days, please email Beth Stahlman '89 at [email protected]. Even if you are unable to make the Saturday sessions, we always need some help with interviews of students who themselves can't make one of our Saturday interview days. Be on the lookout for emails asking for help with these individual interviews.

We look forward to another great year!

Be sure to check us out on the web at: www.princetonclubofgeorgia.com Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award

The Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award was established by the Princeton Club of Georgia in 1985. Unique to our club, the award honors Atlanta area high school juniors who, through community involvement and personal initiative, best exemplify the ideals of service and volunteerism espoused by Woodrow Wilson, former President of the United States and of Princeton University. The ideal candidate volunteers out of a passion to improve our community, not to fulfill school requirements or to build a resume, and for whom service is a part of everyday life. Past winners have created their own service projects, have made long-term commitments to established community projects, or have taken existing projects to exceptional levels.

The Committee selected six finalists for the 2012/2013 Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award: • Nick Na – Brookwood • Lauren Prunkl – Blessed Trinity • Sarah Greenberg – Riverwood • Janay Charles – Stephenson • Colin Humble – Walton • Sara Fridovich-Keil – Westminster There will be an award presentation ceremony on Thursday, October 24th at the Georgia State Capitol. The ceremony will start at 9:00 am on the south steps of the Capitol, followed by a group picture with Governor Deal.

The 2013/2014 search for the next group of outstanding young community leaders in Atlanta is beginning. We are looking for metro-area high school juniors who have demonstrated terrific community initiatives. Applications will soon be available on our website: http://princetonclubofgeorgia.com. We would welcome volunteers who can assist in compiling and sending applications, reviewing applications and planning the award ceremony. For more information please email co-Chairs Charlie Hurt ([email protected]) or Justin Im ([email protected]). ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ ❉ Princeton Prize in Race Relations In 2013, the Princeton Prize in Race Relations (PPRR) had another great year. The PPRR encourages, recognizes, and awards the brave young people who positively solve racial issues in their schools and communities, and provide leadership on these issues for their generation.

This year’s Princeton Prize winner was Berenice Rodriguez. Berenice is a student at . She was awarded the Prize for her incomparable dedication to the human concerns of Hispanic workers and immigrants in Georgia. In the summer before her senior year, Berenice traveled to the onion fields of Vidalia, GA where she translated the concerns of the field workers to doctors who were addressing their health issues at the Emory South Georgia Farm Workers Health Project. She worked tirelessly to explain their plight to her fellow students and teachers. Berenice is the founder of Student Dreamers and Allies, an organization she created to educate her school and community about similar issues in Atlanta.

Winners of the runner-up certificates included Eli Mercer of The Lovett School, Yooha Park of Philips Exeter Academy, Vanilla Parthiban of Woodward Academy, Chastity Van Dyke of Roswell High School, Diana Vela of Gainesville High School, and Gloria Villegas of Tucker High School. Their efforts, using art, dance, and plain old determination to communicate were all very impressive. We had a fantastic award ceremony for this year’s winners, runners up, parents, and sponsors. Yours truly, Gerald Ellis ’89, gave a speech to the prize winners and their supporters entitled “…All the Answers”. The speech encapsulated the modern challenges of race relations by attempting to explain how race relations have evolved through America’s legal history. First, it focused on the necessity of actual love for our fellow citizens as America browns, which is demonstrated by justice. Simultaneously, it attempted to awaken the audience to the necessity of educating ourselves about the legacy of legally-sanctioned supremacy, and the ways it continues to affect our judgment.

The PPRR remains a one of kind award. It is awarded by Princeton in most major cities around the U.S. The PPRR defines “race relations” as: “a volunteer activity in the last 12 months that has had a significant, positive impact on race relations – broadly defined – in his or her school community.” We should all be proud of Princeton for its bold vision and for putting its name on this award.

Once again, the PPRIZE Committee would like to thank alumnus Mark J. Newman ‘76 and Troutman Sanders LLP for again hosting the award ceremony. Many thanks to our PPRR Committee Chair, Katherine Brokaw, Co-chair Darryle Merlette, Karen Ruffin for bringing the food and refreshments to the ceremony, and all the alumni who read essays, especially Alison Earles and Wilma Beatty. We continue to need your support.

Local Alums Obliterate the Record for Unrestricted Giving from the Atlanta, Georgia Region Our Hearts Will Give While We Shall Live, Three Cheers for Old Nassau

Last year, local alums set a new record for unrestricted dollars given to Princeton during and as part of its Annual Giving Campaign ($383.2k). This year’s Annual Giving total for the Atlanta Region: $693.6k—breaking last year’s record by just over $310k! This 81% increase in Annual Giving from the Atlanta Region is particularly impressive considering: 1. Last year was the final year of the Aspire capital campaign. Everyone projected a post-Aspire letdown following the flurry of giving that accompanied the end of the Aspire campaign. All of those projections seriously underestimated the generosity of classes celebrating a major reunion (class numerals ending in 3 or 8) as well as of the rest of the alums in the Atlanta Region. 2. This is the first time in the history of Princeton Annual Giving campaigns that the Atlanta Region has been listed among the top 12 Annual Giving Regions in terms of dollars given. Annual Giving has divided the world into 161 Regions. 10 of the 11 Regions with a greater dollars contribution to this year’s Campaign have substantially more alums than the Atlanta Region. In addition, a number of Regions with significantly more alums contributed fewer dollars to this year’s Campaign than the Atlanta Region. 3. 165 of the 535 alums who contributed to this year’s Annual Giving Campaign have contributed to every Annual Giving Campaign since they graduated from Princeton. Other schools only dream about having such a continued financial commitment from their alums. While our participation rate was slightly less than last year’s record level (62.4% this year, versus 64.7% last), the Atlanta Region’s participation rate exceeded the national average (as we do ever year) by 1.3%. Rather than viewing this year’s dollars total as an aberration, the Club is looking at the new $693.6k gifting record as the new bar to strive for and exceed in future campaigns. To that end, our Regional Annual Giving Chair, Bill Kaspers ’70, is looking for at least one co-chair to assist Bill in future campaigns. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this year’s record-setting results. And, thanks for continuing to support “the best ol’ place of all.” Future generations of Princetonians will be forever grateful for your generosity.
