Usually it’s motivated by the opportunity to hold aloft a small gold-plated statue, but there are plenty memorable occasions where Hollywood’s elite pulled this trope off fantastically. Think Charlize Theron in Monster. Maybe Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine? Or Heath Ledger as Joker. These performances often come to dominate award season. Directors wrenching a truly transformative rendition out of their leads can be the difference between a potential big winner fading into obscurity, or being written into history. The class of 2019 appears particularly full of these turns. There might well be as much intrigue in figuring out which will be remembered, as in watching the performances themselves. ‘Unrecognisable as’ awards could go out to Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I in Mary Queen Of Scots; Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me?; Nicole Kidman in Destroyer; Christian Bale as Dick Cheney in Vice. Others of course have been down this road before. Steve Carell has come a long, long way since Michael Scott and he looks tremendous in Beautiful Boy. And Matt Dillon, who we’ll see in The House That Jack Built, has always had a penchant for the slightly off-colour. There’s probably no one more off-colour than Lars von Trier. Screening for one night only. At Belmont Filmhouse we try to play against type as much as possible. -

About Theatre Bay Area
welcome! Welcome to Theatre Bay Area’s 2018 Annual Conference. We are thrilled to return again this spring to downtown Berkeley as we gather together hundreds of theatre-makers from around the region and far beyond. We are excited for this chance to explore new venues as we meet new colleagues and reconnect with long-time friends and compatriots. This past year has brought a series of stunning developments here in the Bay Area, across the nation, and around the world. As we crafted the programming for this gathering, we aimed to address both the serious challenges and promising opportunities these local and global changes present our community. Our conference theme, “Seismic Shifts: Embracing a Changing Theatre Ecology,” speaks to the enormity of change and the potent mix of anxiety and hope we face in today’s theatre-making environment. Here today we have a chance to confront together those “seismic shifts” and to learn from each other new ways of navigating change and embracing the future. We like to say we make this conference together. While we will hear today from renowned experts, such as our keynote speaker, Professor John Holden, from the University of Leeds and Great Britain’s Clore Cultural Leadership Programme, we also depend on each of you to add your voice to the mix. Your expertise and perspective is essential for creating a day of shared learning and we invite you to engage vigorously in today’s wide range of conversations. Seismic shifts can leave destruction in their wake; they also offer a chance to rebuild in ways that are better and stronger. -

OPPOSITION ro REVrsroNS coNcERNrNc srArEMENrs By PARTICIPATING WRITERS TO THE CREDIT ARBITRATION COMMITTEE The undersigned have all been involved in WGA credit arbitrations, where we are thrust into a competitive process intended to produce "a true and accurate statement of screen authorship." Each credit arbitration is conducted by three anonymous arbiters, whose experience, familiarity with the rules, and willingness to invest the necessary time and effort are only one part of the process. For a multitude of financial and career reasons, the stakes are incredibly high, and statements constitute a participating writer's only chance to speak on his/her own behalf and contribute to the task of thoroughly and accurately evaluating all the material, so that nothing is mis-attributed, given improper weight, or left unconsidered. These statements not only give writers a voice while their fates are being decided, but, if properly crafted, can help mitigate unintentional oversights or confusion on the part of arbiters, many of whom are just as oven¡rhelmed as the writers are, by the guild's extensive rules regarding credit, and by what is often a truly staggering amount of literary material. Writing a thoughtful, comprehensive, and objective statement is always a formidable challenge, and for writers unfamiliar with the process, the learning curve can be quite steep. Simultaneously having to become familiar with the Credits Manual, read and effectively analyze a daunting volume of literary material, and then synthesize this massive amount of information into a cogent, helpful, and readable statement is an arduous task for any writer, particularly if she/he happens to be in the middle of another stressful writing assignment. -

October – December 2013 v7.2 L’Avventura 1960 Alexander Payne Presents October 4 – December 24 In celebration of his new film, NEBRASKA, and Film Streams’ upcoming Feature V event, Alexander Payne has curated his second repertory series at the Ruth Sokolof Theater. We are truly honored to host some favorite films of one of the world’s most important directors and preeminent cinephiles. Featuring, among others, two films each by Michelangelo Antonioni, Akira Kurosawa, and Yasujirô Ozu, “Alexander Payne Presents” will be a movie-lover’s feast. To call Payne a friend of Film Streams would be an understatement. A found- ing board member and ardent supporter, it’s safe to say he’s a huge reason we’re here. His first repertory series at the Ruth Sokolof Theater – which was Le rayon vert 1986 Dersu Uzala 1975 the very first classic film program at the Theater – included works like SEVEN Walkabout 1971 Le amiche 1955 SAMURAI, 8 ½, THE LAST DETAIL, THE WILD BUNCH, and LA NOTTE.
