VERSION 2.7.8

This is (one of) the last maintenance update(s) for DEVONthink To Go 2. It prepares the data store for version 3.0, which has been in the works for a while and will become available as a separate app in the App Store in due course. A welcome screen will inform you about the arrival of DEVONthink To Go 3.0. The update to 2.7.8 also brings those bug fixes over from version 3 that don't depend on larger changes to the database or app structure, or would make the app

Fixed. New tags were not necessarily marked as such. Fixed. Records moved to another database could be purged under certain circumstances even though they were not synced yet. Fixed. Sorting by name could order some items differently in item lists and in the destination selector. Fixed. The toolbar for documents wasn't updated after downloading the document on demand. Fixed. The button for expanding the detail view sometimes vanished randomly. Fixed. The activity indicator wasn't always properly shown during a database migration. Fixed. Various glitches of the database list. Fixed. The "Saved" notification ducked the suggestion bar. Fixed by removing the unnecessary notification. After selecting PDF search results and scrolling, the found results were not highlighted. Fixed. Conversions were shown for items not yet downloaded. Fixed When switching the item list out of editing mode, the selected item showed a checkmark for a fraction of a second. Fixed. The full-screen progress indicator label was clipped on iPhone in portrait orientation. Fixed. Moving items with the Files app did not reliably work. Fixed. PDFs were reloaded unnecessarily after saving, causing side-effects such as changing unexpectedly from double spread view to single pages. Fixed. Background tasks were not correctly marked as ended and so caused unnecessary console messages. Fixed. Some examples for URL commands appeared as clickable links in the integrated help. Fixed. Documents without content could crash the app. Fixed. Extracting PDF metadata could crash the app. Fixed. Updating the app badge could crash the app. Fixed. Scrolling in lists with a large number of items could crash the app. Fixed. Starting maintenance tasks while the app was going into the background could crash the app. Fixed. Creating a formatted note with Clip to DEVONthink crashed the extension. Fixed Opening documents with invalid item link could potentially crash the app. Fixed. Collecting data in the file provider extension could crash the extension. Fixed. Importing files from, e.g., the Files app, could freeze the app. Fixed. Sync — Rare issue of duplication in case of conflicts of indexed items. Fixed. Sync — In case of temporary server issues of Dropbox endless retries could be performed. Fixed. Sync — Obsolete files/folders might not have beem removed from the internal sync status folder after cleaning sync stores. Fixed. Sync — WebDAV session handling could throw harmless exceptions. Fixed. Sync — Skip state restoration when the background sync is active to prevent a (harmless) console warning. Sync — Requesting the sync status of databases synchronized through Bonjour could crash the app. Fixed. Sync — When the background app refresh was triggered before the app was even launched at least once, the app crashed. Fixed. Sync — Broken status files could crash the app. Fixed. Sync — Empty sync store uploads could crash the app. Fixed. Sync — Rare crashes related to multi-threading. Fixed.

VERSION 2.7.7

This maintenance release allows you to merge floating toolbars with the top toolbar to move them out of the way, and increases the size of preview images. Version 2.7.7 also improves the performance when handling PDFs, better avoids reindexing metadata unnecessarily, and fixes a number of bugs and glitches.

The floating toolbars of PDFs and sheets can be merged into the top toolbar; the chosen position is saved.

Larger preview images for shallowly synced items. Items can be moved to another database even when an item with the same internal ID already exists; the item will be replicated instead. Items that are changed externally are updated more reliably. Application state is restored more reliably when returning to DEVONthink To Go (iOS 13 or later). Opening URLs externally is more consistent.

DEVONthink To Go 2.7.9 Documentation, page 7 Reindexing metadata happens less often unnecessarily. Better performance when checking for item kinds. Better performance when retrieving item metadata. PDF library updated.

Sync — WebDAV URLs are encoded before saving if necessary. Sync — Duplicating items in case of conflicts is more reliable.

Fixed a crash related to recursive parent structures. Fixed an issue where documents were reloaded unnecessarily when switching away from DEVONthink To Go and returning. SECURITY

Does DEVONthink To Go encrypt my data? Yes. All data stored on your device is encrypted using iOS' own encryption. Transmitted data is encrypted using DEVONthink To Go's own AES 256 bit encryption (unless you don't enter a password for direct connections or encryption key for sync stores).

How safe is my data on my device? DEVONthink To Go relies on iOS' built-in encryption so all data is always stored encrypted and can only be read when your device is unlocked, e.g. using Touch ID or your passcode.

When you lock your device (switch off the screen) DEVONthink To Go gets about three minutes to complete background tasks, then iOS withdraws access to all its files. Even with physical access to the device it is now impossible to decrypt the data without using the correct fingerprint or passcode (as of July 2016).

Therefore DEVONthink To Go does not implement any additional encryption for storing the data.

How safe is my data during a sync? If you set an encryption key for a sync store all data is AES 256 bit encrypted before leaving the device and is stored encrypted on the server. It can only be retrieved using the correct key. The same is true for direct connections where all data is encrypted using the key set in the Bonjour options.

In addition the username and password you set for newly created databases is used as soon as you sync the database to another device. The database cannot be retrieved from a sync store or via direct connection without entering the right credentials.

DEVONthink To Go 2.7.9 Documentation, page 37 SPOTLIGHT

What data is available in Spotlight? Spotlight receives the name, the first 16 KB of text content, the comment, and the tags for each item as well as metadata like the item's type, its icon, and the creation and modification dates.

Why only 16 KB of text? This seems to be the internal limit of Spotlight (iOS 11).

What if Spotlight shows no results from DEVONthink To Go? Check DEVONthink To Go's settings in the Settings app and make sure that Search & Siri Suggestions is switched on. Then try to search for terms that you know that occur in the document, e.g. in its title. If still no results show up rebuild the Spotlight index.

SYNCHRONIZATION

Do I have do sync whole databases? No. DEVONthink To Go always syncs the metadata for whole databases but you can select for the location, the database, or individual groups if you want to sync their content files too. If you sync only the metadata you can download the actual content later on demand. See also p. 28ff

I have lost my encryption key. Can you recover it? Unfortunately no. The encryption key is is never shared with DEVONtechnologies. And if we could recover your encryption key anyone else could do this too. We're also using strong encryption to ensure your privacy that (at the time of this writing) it can't be cracked without substantial computing power, if at all. You're sure you don't have noted it down on some piece of paper somewhere?

Are multiple Dropbox accounts supported? No. The official Dropbox API only pairs with one account at a time.

Does the sync work with OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.? Not yet. If you would like to use DEVONthink To Go with a service that is not yet supported, let us know. We might add support for it in a future release.

What do I do if I cannot get it to work? First check out our troubleshooting section. If you still cannot get it to sync, contact us.
