Firstly, I would like to thank and congratulate Gwen Livingstone for organising the 32nd Birthday Run incorporated with the Michael Livingstone Memorial Run. It was another huge success and is one of my favourite runs. The road in Jugiong brings back many fond memories from my truck driving days when it was a busy stretch of the . Now Jugiong’s a quiet boutique town of cottage industries. My first job at eighteen was doing a bread run from Cootamundra to Harden to Jugiong. In Jugiong I delivered bread to Henry and Allen General Store, the motel and all the road-house/ petrol stations along the busy stretch -- and receiving a free coffee at the Amoco Road-House when I delivered their bread. So, Jugiong has a soft spot in my heart. Our gratitude must also go to Robyn Absolon for the cake for this auspicious occasion. It was sad for me to cut the cake. It was a real work of art and you had to see it to appreciate it. A downfall for the day was the expiry of the P.A. System. I didn’t realise that the battery was flat. The sea of Historic vehicles was absolutely breathtaking and to catch up with old friends was an added bonus. So I urge any of our members who haven’t been on this run to do yourselves a favour and attend next year’s run. You won’t regret it.

Much progress -- our Webmaster, John Milnes, announced that our Website is now up and running. So, log onto www.cootamundraantiquemotorclub.org and see for yourself. If you have anything of interest, please pass this on to John. This is just another service for our members and promotes our club further afield.

Our re-vamped windscreen banners were well received and those with existing banners can have the picture of the wattle put on them by taking them to Walsh’s Signs.

The discussions at the February Meeting in regards to the re-vamping the club’s uniforms was very interesting to hear what members say; and it was very constructive. Paul Ballard’s suggestion we appoint our foundation members (Gwen Livingstone and John Collins) to explain our green & yellow shirts was a great idea and I feel their reply in this newsletter will solve this problem before it becomes too complex.

C.A.M.C. Wednesday night Workshop has commenced for another term and no doubt Alan will get a good roll-up. Take advantage of this service, enjoy each other’s company and learn more about your car at the same time.

March Meeting will be at Harden Bowling Club. Do yourself a favour and have a wonderful Chinese Banquet meal there before the meeting. To book – phone Sue & Peter -- 6386 3365 evenings only, by Wednesday 1st. Also remember to bring your Historic vehicles out for this occasion. Cootamundra members meet at Mowalls -- 5.15 pm. for 5.30 departure.

On Friday 30th March, 2012 - Darren Absolon and Sophie Byrne will embark on one of life’s journeys as they celebrate becoming man & wife. To Darren and Sophie, myself and the members of Cootamundra Antique Motor Club wish you all the best on your special day, knowing that this big step will be the best step you’ll ever take in your lives.

I have inside information on what the Bridal Cars are. No Holdens. That’s for sure. There will be a 1969 XT GT, a 1970 XW GT, a 1971 XY GT, and the Bridal car is Graham Absolon’s brand new FG GT. [Falcons, that is.]

One thing I would like to mention with Anzac Day only around the corner – we’ll most likely be transporting the veterans on this occasion. We used six cars last year and I think we’ll need at least six this year. So please – give this some serious thought, as Anzac Day is not far away. Page 4 Finally, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Kelly, Trevis, Kaine and “ Herbie 53” Waring to our C.A.M.C. family. Please make Kelly and her family feel welcome and encourage Kelly to participate and enjoy our club activities.

Now I want everyone to read this quote and think about it. (It’s a good one.): The secrets of life are open to the thinker . . . . We prefer the swarm of other people’s ideas to our own thinking because thinking is the hardest kind of work a mortal can do. And just because it is hardest, the higher rewards are reserved to it. Thinking calls for facts; facts are found by digging; but he who has gathered this wealth is well equipped for life.” Henry Ford

May the Ford be with you, PAUL

COOTAMUNDRA ANTIQUE MOTOR CLUB SHIRTS

What colour is the Wattle? It is various shades of yellow, and the leaves are many shades of green. I feel as long as your club shirt is a shade of yellow, or green, which ever colour you desire or can buy, it represents the Cootamundra Antique Motor Club. I feel each member should purchase a yellow or green shirt at the cost they can afford, and then have the shirt embroidered with our logo at Baileyana Clothing and Embroidery, Cootamundra. This also means Club members who already have a club shirt will not have to purchase a new one. Every year a new batch of shades of yellow appear and each year we have new members. This will mean they will always be able to have a green or yellow shirt and, like the blooms of the wattle tree, the variation of the yellow or green when joined together, we make a whole Club. Gwen Livingstone.

SCROUNGED FACTS AND GOINGS ON

Talk about foot-in-mouth disease during “the Roundtable” at the Feb. Meeting ! Gwen Livingstone said that She and Patsy decided to go TOPLESS (Wow!) to Jugiong. Hope that there were no cameras around and the girls used plenty of Bananaboat. What I think Gwen meant to say was that She and Patsy had a very pleasant drive to Jugiong in a lovely red Ford convertible.

Our friendly member from Junee, who happens to drive a green MORGAN, arrived to pick up Mavis to take her to the Birthday Run at Jugiong. Mavis was not ready, hadn’t packed the hamper nor put on the Bananaboat. Denis was a week early. (Is this a case of D.O.B. (Date Of Birth), or not reading “Coming Events”, or a water problem with the Whisky?) Page 6 MGA Did anyone go to Gnoo Blas in February? Checking out past “Coota Hootas” I found that Frank Hiscock took his 1959 MGA Twin-Cam to GNOO BLAS in 1993. In 1993 Frank enjoyed about 20 laps of the old Gnoo Blas Race Track at Orange in his MGA with other historic race-cars. Frank and Sandra attended a Dinner that night with all the dignatories (old race-car drivers) such as Jack Brabham. Gnoo Blas Race-Track (of about 4 km) hasn’t operated as a racetrack ever since the event was stopped in the 1950s. Each year there is a nostalgic reunion for enthusiasts who were part of the crowds there, like John Rickett who has given his AUSTIN HEALEY a blast around it, also. MGB Jenny Farish of Cootamundra has an MGB which is 49 years old. There are some big celebrations in 2012 for the MGB. The biggest car club in the world (The MG Car Club) is celebrating this year -- the 50th Birthday of the MGB. Club Plates -- they are almost impossible to make a smart message. However -- There’s a Chev 4 in Parkes Antique Motor Club – which carries the number plate : 44444-H That’s pretty clever !

Each year on The Queen’s Birthday Weekend, the Veteran & Vintage Motor Club Inc. holds the JUNE RALLY You can be an entrant or a spectator. John Collins and John Simpfendorfer have the Entry Forms. From last year’s June Rally proceeds, a total of $3600 was donated to Cystic Fibrosis, Ronald MacDonald House and Palliative Care.

A little boy asked his father, “Daddy, how much does it cost to get married?” Father replied, “I don’t know, Son. I’m still paying.”

A lot of folks can’t understand how we came to have an OIL SHORTAGE. Well, there’s a very simple answer : -- Nobody bothered to check the oil. We just didn’t know we were getting low. The reason for that is purely geographical. Our oil is located in Bass Strait, East Queensland, Canning Basin, Perth Basin, and North-West Continental Shelf. Our Dipsticks are located in Canberra. Any questions? No? I didn’t think so.

After setting up camp and the billy boiling, I checked in and met up with some fellow riders from South Coast, Goulburn, Yass and Sydney. I handed out bike-parts to a couple of Canberra boys and attended the BBQ dinner.

Up early Friday morning for the ride out to Bungendore. Had to change down to second gear to go down the big hill. After a cuppa it was back to rally headquarters for Lunch. Next was another short ride - finishing up at the Governor’s Inn, Gold Creek. I didn’t do this run on the bike but went in one of the back-up vehicles . . . . . which missed a turn and got hopelessly lost . . . . . By the time we got back to the pub for a beer everyone was leaving to go back to base.

Another great BBQ was enjoyed that night.

Saturday morning was a choice between a Short ride or a Long ride out to Lake George for morning tea. Guess what one I took? While stopped at the Lake we were entertained by Sean Herbert who put an Arrow Copter AC-10 rotocraft through its paces, seemingly turning the craft inside out. The morning tea was again excellent and catered for by members of A.C.T. Veteran, Vintage & Classic Motor Cycle Club.

The bike display at H.Q. saw some very nice bikes on display -- from a Veteran F.N. to military bikes, to bikes with side-cars, to plenty of Classics – 1960s and ‘70s -- and up to a big “R” model TRIUMPH. And I was impressed by a very nice KAWASAKI from Wagga. Pity there’s no room here for its photo.

Saturday night was the Dinner with presentations of trophies. Peter Goodwin, member of Cootamundra Restorers Club, brought home the trophy for “Best loved unrestored Bike” – namely the 1935 Girder fork RUDGE. Congratulations, Pete.

Sunday morning’s run was out to Woods Reserve, past Cotter Dam – where riders again had an excellent morning tea; then back to base for Lunch. I counted 12 Cootamundra local riders and lookers at Canberra for the weekend. I only took 5 Litres of petrol with me for the rally; and still had enough left to put in the ride-on and cut the lawns when I got home. How’s that for fuel consumption against your big 6’s and V8’s??!

Once again, another great, well-run Rally. Congratulations to members, riders and helpers of the V.V.&.C. M.C.C. of A.C.T. JOHN SIMPFENDORFER

Page 8 February 5 --- The MICHAEL LIVINGSTONE MEMORIAL RUN -- to JUGIONG A convoy of vintage cars travelled to Jugiong this Sunday to take part in the annual Michael Livingstone Memorial Run and to celebrate the 32nd birthday of the Cootamundra Antique Motor Club.

As the Secretary of our club in 1980, Michael Livingstone set the ball rolling for a very successful club -- and over the years he kept the ball rolling by taking on the roles of Newsletter Editor , Events, Rally Director, President and the Delegate to other organisations. “Delegate to other organisations” resulted in his organising the 1988 Bicentenary Celebrations at Cootamundra in which he ended up as the Master of Ceremonies at Cootamundra’s first Breakfast In The Park. And as our Delegate to a Bush Council Meeting at Tamworth, because of the distance - he organised an aeroplane to take the delegates from local Vintage Car Clubs from Cootamundra airport to Tamworth and return. Michael was pretty good at organising things -- just to mention a few. Since 2007, the year that Michael died, the club’s Birthday Run includes the Michael Livingstone Memorial Run. This year on the Birthday Run - 55 cars were counted outside JUGIONG SWIMMING POOL -- 25 Heritage cars from our club, and 30 Heritage cars from as far afield as Canberra (David Thomas) and other clubs like --- Yass Antique Motor Club, and P76 Country Car Club, and Antique Motor Club, Goulbur n Classic Car Club, Young Heritage Motor Club, Orange District Antique Motor Club, South Coast Vintage Car Club and Illawarra Vintage Vehicle Club. After all the above participants had enjoyed their Picnic Lunches under shady trees in The Recreation Park - it was then - the Speeches, and some Gifts and then the splendid Birthday Cake was cut, and shared among the hundred people participating. Thank You -- Robyn Absolon -- for this annual and delicious cake.

Tuesday 14 Feb. Mid-Week Run : St Valentines Run to JUNEE.

Organised by John Simp. this was a wonderful day for our mid week run. There were eight cars, one motorbike, and 14 people that were able to take this opportunity for a few hours of fellowship. We left the Mill at 9.30 and followed in convoy, but making sure there was plenty of space between each car, to allow for the many trucks and cars to be able to pass us, safely. When we reached Junee it was time for coffee and a fancy ice cream at Humphreys on Loftus which originally was the Loftus Hotel. This was organised by Trish Stewart. By 11am we were on our way to spend time with Selby and Maureen Fitzgerald and view their array of restoration projects, which consisted of: A 1927 cream T Model FORD tourer. 1937 red STANDARD Flying 14 soft-top, (which Maureen drives.) 1950 Mercedes Benz 170 S, (in process of being restored.) 1973 YAMAHA 90 motor bike, 1953 BSA Bantam ? a Harley Davidson, (also in restoration.) There was an aero light airplane, which does fly and many antique tricycles hanging from the roof. Selby had built a“caravan” that actually trailered the T Model to rallies, then once the Ford is unloaded, a double bed lays down, table and chairs put in, sink and wardrobes already secured. Fantastic ingenuity. Selby was a fitter and turner at the train’s Roundhouse at Junee and Maureen was a former nurse. After quite some time we thanked our hosts and before we left, Gwen gave the ladies St Valentine gifts, which was a surprise and greatly appreciated. Then 12 of us went to the Junee RSL club for lunch, which put the final touch to our day.
