Sciences, Professor) UNEDITED TRANSLATION For inFormon only Preface TRPell:fl.)N MON RWSUE The Soviet fishing industry of the Pacific bisin.:.lia§ 1=!':ement and is encountering a variety of marine life ranging from numerous species of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and mammals, to sea weeds. Fish constitute the basis (78--82%) for the Soviet fishing industry in this area. The large variety of commercial fish constitute a raw material that essentially differs in chemical composition and technological properties. Hence in order to process these catches efficiently and economically it is important to understand some- thing about their mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. The appearance of the 21st volume of TINRO NEWS (1942), which contained the first summary of a study of the chemical and technological properties of fish from the Far East, has been followed by other wide-ranging, systematic investigations. The data resulting from these studies have enabled us to establish more precisely the chemical composition and technological assets 7530 .2 I -029-5332 of traditional fish catches in the Far East as well as of numerous species from different areas of the Pacific frequented by the Soviet fishing fleet. We studied numerous species from the western and eastern zone of the North Pacific, from the eastern areas down to the tropic latitudes, including species from the Korea Strait, the East China Sea, and from the Gulf of Tonkin. We also investigated fish species caught in the eastern part of the Indian Ocean, off the coast of western Australia in the Great Australian Bight and off the coastof New Zealand. In recent years research conducted at the laboratories of our Far East fishing industry has resulted in important data on the technological characteristics of fish from that area. Finally, new research on the chemical composition' of commercial species from the Pacific area has also been published in foreign countries. Our goal is to summarize the fragmented data and to identify the aims of technological research. The combined data will be a useful reference for the technologists and merchandizers of our Far East fishing industry. In compiling this summary we cnnsulted the data already, published by members of TINRO, technological reports of the scientific archives of TINRO, and numerous sources (see bibliography) dealing with the chemical composition and technological assets of commercial fish encountered in the fishing areas of the Pacific basin. 3. In order to arrange the extensive factual material, we adopted the system presently used in the zoological classification of fish. The content and structure of individual divisions and chapters were predetermined by the volume of pertinent data. Fish bodies, as is known, consist of tissues made up of biophilous and biogenic substances which make up the structural material and foodstuffs of the hydrobiont. The bulk of organic substances that participate in the biochemical processes of synthesis and decomposition appear to be very unstable. As a result there is an ongoing change in the chemical composition of the tissues of the fish body; this change is regulated mainly by biological causes. No less significant are the chemical changes occurring in fish tissue posthumously,when tissue enzymes and microorganisms and various external factors (temperature, the oxygen of the air, sun light and so on) begin to affect the body. Posthumous changes in chemical composition and in the property of unprocessed fish enormously affect the latter's technological characteristics, and research in this area is significant enough to deserve a separate chapter. An investigation into tissue composition of various commercial fish may be desireable for the purpose of establishing qualitative characteristics, or for determining the quantity either of individual elements (establishment of basic chemical comp.), or of individual substances, or groups of substances, that form part of the material under study (establishment of combined chemical composition). Both these approaches, besides being of important biochemical and biological significance, also have considerable practical value. They make it possible to determine the rate at which the nutritive and technological qualities of the fish are changing, measued by time and ocation of a given catch, and thus determine its most efficient use. In our research the second approach predominated; the chemical analyses were conducted according to well-known methods. Along with preparing the materials for chemical analysis, the parts of the fish were also correlated by weight. In this area numerous tasks were carried out especially by V. Bogachev, M. Borisova, I. Varpakhovskii, V. Gotovets, P. Kantemirov, B. Kalinin, E. Kleie, E. Koshubo, A. Lisachenko, O. Omeryanenko and I. Frolov. New marine species are being described at a rate of about 100–150 per year, with freshwater numbers slightly higher. Within the Paleocene and Eocene there are several taxa which display dentitions apparently transitional between these extreme trophic modality, in particular the genus Burnhamia. The holotype of Burnhamia daviesi was studied through X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning. Digital renderings of this incomplete but articulated jaw and dentition revealed previously unrecognized characters regarding the jaw cartilages and teeth. In addition, the genus Sulcidens gen. nov. is erected for articulated dentitions from the Paleocene previously assigned to Myliobatis. Phylogenetic analyses confirm Burnhamia as a sister taxon to the mobulids, and the Mobulidae as a sister group to Rhinoptera. Shared dental characters between Burnhamia and Sulcidens likely represent independent origins of planktivory within the rhinopterid – myliobatid clade. The transition from highly-specialized durophagous feeding morphologies to the morphology of planktivores is perplexing, but was facilitated by a pelagic swimming mode in these rays and we propose through subsequent transition from either meiofauna-feeding or pelagic fish-feeding to pelagic planktivory.

In combination, BCF swimming and unpowered gliding are opposite ends on a spectrum of swimming, and electric rays provide an appropriate study system for understanding how the performance of each mode is controlled hydrodynamically. We predicted that the dorso-ventrally flattened body disc generates lift during both BCF swimming and gliding. To test this prediction, we examined 10 neonate lesser electric rays, Narcine brasiliensis, as they swam and glided. From video, we tracked the motion of the body, disc, pelvic fins and tail. By correlating changes in the motions of those structures with swimming performance, we have kinematic evidence that supports the hypothesis that the body disc is generating lift. Most importantly, both the pitch of the body disc and the tail, along with undulatory frequency, interact to control horizontal swimming speed and Strouhal number during BCF swimming. During gliding, the pitch of the body disc and the tail also interact to control the speed on the glide path and the glide angle.

Bennett1 Abstract Longnose skates may have a high intrinsic vulnerability among fishes due to their large body size, slow growth rates and relatively low fecundity, and their exploitation as fisheries target-species places their populations under considerable pressure. These skates are found circumglobally in subtropical and temperate coastal waters. Although longnose skates have been recorded for over 150 years in South America, the ability to assess the status of these species is still compromised by critical knowledge gaps. Based on a review of 185 publications, a comparative synthesis of the biology and ecology was conducted on two commercially important elasmobranchs in South American waters, the yellownose skate Zearaja chilensis and the roughskin skate Dipturus trachyderma; in order to examine and compare their taxonomy, distribution, fisheries, feeding habitats, reproduction, growth and longevity. There has been a marked increase in the number of published studies for both species since 2000, and especially after 2005, although some research topics remain poorly understood. Considering the external morphological similarities of longnose skates, especially when juvenile, and the potential niche overlap in both, depth and latitude it is recommended that reproductive seasonality, connectivity and population structure be assessed to ensure their long-term sustainability. We measured the metabolic rate of late-stage embryos to determine whether oxygen suffi- cient for the embryo’s needs will diffuse through the egg capsule, and to assess the energetic cost of tail beating. Metabolic rate was inferred from oxygen consumption rates while embryos were in the capsules, unencapsulated, and anesthetized and unencapsulated. Anesthesia inhibited volun- tary movements, including tail wagging, allowing an estimate of the standard metabolic rate (SMR). –1 –1 Averaged over five embryos, the SMR was 0.032 ± 0.004 ml O2 g hr . There was no significant –1 –1 difference in metabolic rate between encapsulated (0.058 ± 0.009 ml O2 g hr ) and unencapsu- –1 –1 lated (0.049 ± 0.009 ml O2 g hr ) skates. Tail beating was found to be energetically expensive, requiring a 53%–81% increase over the SMR. From literature values for the oxygen permeability of the egg capsule we conclude that tail beating is required to supply sufficient oxygen to the embryonic skate.
