    Woodwork hand-tools JSS 1 (2nd Term – Week 2) Woodwork hand-tools BORING TOOLS – In machining, boring is the process of enlarging a hole that has already been drilled (or cast), by means of a single-point cutting tool (or of a boring head containing several such tools). Boring is used to achieve greater accuracy of the diameter of a hole, and can be used to cut a tapered hole. Boring can be viewed as the internal-diameter counterpart to turning, which cuts external diameters. Boring tools are used to make holes in wooden materials. The wooden material is held firm with braces before the boring is done. Some examples of boring tools are wood brace, ratchet brace, bradawl, etc; some of the boring tools are discussed below. (I.) The Ratchet Brace: The Ratchet brace has four (4) parts which are: • The Head: The head is made of hardwood and shaped to fit the hand of the user. It is screwed to a steel sleeve. It fits over the crank rod and runs on the hardened steel balls. • The Crank: This is a rectangular bent metal rod. It fits into the hardwood or plastic handle. • The Chuck: The end of the crank is enlarged, threaded and slotted to receive the socket and jaws respectively. • The Ratchet: A ratchet is a tool fitted to the ratchet brace so that holes can be drilled (bored) at specific parts that are not really exposed, such as corners where it is impossible to make complete turn. CUTTING TOOLS – In the context of machining, a cutting tool or cutter is any tool that is used to remove material from the workpiece by means of shear deformation.

Form of programmable automation in which the processing equipment (e.g., machine tool) is controlled by coded instructions using numbers, letter and symbols - Numbers form a set of instructions (or NC program) designed for a particular part. - Allows new programs on same machined for different parts. - Most important function of an NC system is positioning (tool and/or work piece). When is it appropriate to use NC? 1. Parts from similar raw material, in variety of sizes, and/or complex geometries. 2. Low-to-medium part quantity production. 3. Similar processing operations & sequences among work pieces. 4. Frequent changeover of machine for different part numbers. 5. Meet tight tolerance requirements (compared to similar conventional machine tools). Advantages of NC over conventional systems: Flexibility with accuracy, repeatability, reduced scrap, high production rates, good quality. Reduced tooling costs. Easy machine adjustments. More operations per setup, less lead time, accommodate design change, reduced inventory. Rapid programming and program recall, less paperwork. Faster prototype production. By far the most important consideration when using a spanner is to ensure that it fits the nut perfectly. Too loose, and it will round the comers of the nut - and slip, often damaging the nut. Open ended - 'C' spanner The open ended spanner is the most common type, and may have a single or double end. The head has its jaws offset by about 15 degrees from the run of the shaft. This is so the spanner can be turned over to engage different flats of a nut when working in confined spaces. Another version, called an obstruction spanner, is designed for use in confined spaces. It has one head set at anything upto 90 degrees to the shaft, and the shaft may have a slight curve. Ring spanner As the name implies, the ring spanner usually has a completely enclosed head, and may have six or 12 flats. A 12 flat spanner engages upon the corners of the nut and can engage both hexagon and square bolts. A six flat spanner is normally shaped to fit against all 6 sides of hexagon nuts, this ensures a very tight fit and can allow considerable force to be applied.
