The city had plans to clear Try and get your ball and redevelop the whole area in the way that into Skid Row’s they had done with Bunker Hill. containment zone! In response to this plan, community organizations PAR: 1 developed an alternative plan that preserved the low-income hotels and social services in the 50-block area of Skid Row. This alternative plan carried the day, and this concentration of housing and services became known as the containment zone. This “containment” has allowed Skid Row to maintain its status as a recovery community, preserving afford- able housing and social services for those most in need. This preservation was not achieved through zoning alone, but today’s Skid Row has been protected from redevelopment by the way that it is zoned. Find out how this works by playing through this golf course. • Blinders Keepers Screenplay FINAL
Blinders Keepers Screenplay by John Rachel Copyright © 2013 INT: CONGRESS – NIGHT The legislative hall is filled with senators, congressman, the Supreme Court, VIPs, press. They are assembled for the annual State of the Union address. PRESIDENT is at podium. PRESIDENT As I stand before this great body and look out at the faces of those who have dedicated themselves to this great nation, I can say with confidence that this nation is strong and on certain footing. He stops and abruptly his expression changes. Hands grasping the edges of the podium, he looks down lost in thought. When he looks back up, gone is the confident smile, the twinkle in his eye. PRESIDENT cont. Who am I trying to fool here? You, my respected Congressmen? Some of the finest legislators to ever hold public office? The excellent justices of the Supreme Court who preside over the greatest legal institution in history? Myself? No, I’m not here to try to fool anyone. These are times unlike any this nation has ever seen. So I’ll tell you exactly what the state of our union is. It’s a fucking mess! A deathly silence fills the entire congressional chamber. Blank faces and unfocused eyes everywhere. Then, all at once, everyone immediately stands up and starts giving him a wild standing ovation. The President smiles and waves. Finally, they sit back down. PRESIDENT cont. So here’s what we’re gonna do. I want you all to look down at the floor. Now pull your pant legs up over your calves. What do you see? For those senators and congressman Page 2 from Texas, this will be easy.

  • FREA Presidents and FREA History ~ 60 Years of Service
March 2014 Volume 39—No. 3 FREA Presidents and FREA History ~ 60 Years of Service For 60 years, FREA has had a governing board led by the FREA President. FREA members elect their President to serve for one 2 year term. Like all members of FREA who give of themselves, and their resources, the President’s position is a volunteer position. What, in fact does the FREA President do? More than can be recounted here in any kind of detail, but here is an overview. The President begins their tenure by serving as President-Elect for 2 years, learning and growing into the position, and is present during most of the President’s functions. There are 5 FREA Board Meetings throughout the year at which the President presides. The preparation for these meetings involves many different moving parts, and many different people: 10 State Directors, Special Committee Chairs, Standing Committee Chairs, and usually the continuation of their position inside their local unit. (e.g. President Thelma Mosley is also Membership Chair for Alachua REA). The President is also present at Florida Retired Foundation meetings, as a Trustee Officer, but those meetings are presided over by the FREF Chair. Another of the President’s duties is to preside over the Annual FREA Convention. The convention week is filled with meetings and functions and while the President has little down time during the convention, this is merely the culmination of months of preparation. Before the convention are thousands of details to be handled. The President chooses the convention theme, venue, activities, working with her selected Convention Coordinator and the FREA State Office staff to pull these together into a cohesive whole.
