S aint Athanasius took part in the First

Ecumenical Council in the year 325 when he was still a deacon. He surpassed everyone there in his zeal to uphold the teaching that Christ is consubstantial (of one essence) with th e Father, and not merely a creature as the Arians proclaimed. This radiant beacon of spent most of his life in exile from his See, because of the plotting of his enemies. He returned to his flock as he was approaching the end of his life. Like an evening star, he illumined the Orthodox faithful with his words for a little while, then reposed in 373.

Saint Cyril was the nephew of Patriarch Theophilus of Alexandria, who educated him from his youth. He succeeded to his uncle’s position in 412, but was deposed through the intrigues of the Nestorian heretics. He later resumed his See, and Saint Cyril presided at the Third in 431, which rejected and denounced the Nestorian blasphemy against the Most Holy . His wise words demonstrated the error of their false doctrine. Saint Cyril reposed in the Lord in 444.

“The Lord did not come to make a display. He came to heal and to teach suffering men. For one who wanted to make a display the thing would have been just to appear and dazzle the beholders. But for Him Who came to heal and to teach the way was not merely to dwell here, but to put Himself at the disposal of those who needed Him, and to be manifested according as they could bear it.” ~ Saint Athanasius “the Great” of Alexandria “If the poison of pride is swelling up in you, turn to the ; and that Bread, Which is your God humbling and disguising Himself, will teach you

humility. If the fever of selfish greed rages in you,
