3 3 The past year has been a time of consolidation, focus and change. We set tough targets to stabilise the organisation’s finances, while still maintaining our excellent reputation in delivering services to people with epilepsy and their families. It was with great satisfaction that we achieved our financial target this year, and I would like to thank the tireless efforts of our CEO, Robert Cole, and acknowledge the support of the entire team of staff and volunteers.

The Epilepsy Centre, like all not-for-profit organisations, has faced a number of challenges arising from an increasingly competitive human services sector. The ability of Australians to support charities has been stretched, resulting in slowed donations, grants and fundraising. However, we have persevered, and I sincerely thank our supporters, both long-standing and new, who acknowledge the important work we do, and allow us to continue to deliver and develop our services.

Our Client Service Team has been augmented by the appointment of a new Registered Nurse, Jo Glaze, which has allowed us to expand our Epilepsy Clinics to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and continue to provide essential services in the Flinders Medical Centre and Royal Hospital. We currently serve over 2,600 clients and provide epilepsy education and seizure first aid training in schools, universities and government departments, counselling and welfare to individuals and families, advocacy, as well as a continuing commitment to our E-camp and Carer’s retreat. We warmly welcome Jo to the team and I would like to salute the ongoing commitment of our Client Services Manager Mark Francis, and our counsellors Pam Adams and Dianne Day. Sincere thanks to our previous Registered Nurse, Sandy McCarthy- Jones, whose skill and expertise have been deeply valued.

The Epilepsy Centre has continued to seek Government collaboration and funding, source new grants and improve our call centre business. The Board is preparing for our next Strategic Planning session and anticipates increased focus on diverse partnerships and new sources of funding.

A new development is the introduction of the Epilepsy Ambassador’s program. We warmly welcome Professor John Mulley and Darel Hart, our inaugural Ambassadors, and look forward to working with them to promote Epilepsy awareness in our community.

The Board has seen many changes over this period. Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution made by Barbara Rajkowska, who retired from the Board at the end of 2010. Barbara has dedicated nine years of service to the Board, demonstrating strong leadership, expertise and vision. We wish her all the very best in her future endeavours.

We also regrettably farewelled Andrew Wicks, Judy Mansfield, Debra Kay, and Mark Herbertt, whose skills and commitment will be missed. We sincerely thank them for their many years of excellent service, and helping to develop the Epilepsy Centre’s professionalism, accountability and direction.

The Board has been revived by new members who bring a broad range of experience and fresh perspectives. I would like to acknowledge Penny Munro, Iain Pattrick and Frank Cutillo for their considerable contributions, and most recently, the interest and support of Rodney Martin, Erica Thomas and David Angus. Warm thanks go to each of my fellow Board members for their support in my first year as President (there have been some very large shoes to fill!).

Finally, I would like to acknowledge our dedicated volunteers, Community Link and Epilepsy Centre staff. Together, we have pulled through a very difficult financial year, and I look forward to tackling the challenges ahead.

6 Our mission is “To improve in all respects the welfare of people with epilepsy and their families in South Australia and the Northern Territory” underpinned with a vision to “Be the leading provider of epilepsy services and to create a centre of excellence”. I am honored to serve people living with epilepsy and humbled by the appreciation we receive.

The Epilepsy Centre has experienced another difficult year because of continuing effects of the world economy.

Our Epilepsy Clinics at the Flinders Medical Centre (both Adult & Paediatric), the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the Royal Adelaide Hospital are our prime focus because they allow us to address needs at the time that patients are newly diagnosed with epilepsy.

We are still under resourced for demand and we are continuing our pursuits to obtain funding and resources to increase service staff. We do not receive any Government funding. Government funding would enable us to address massive unmet need both in the cities and the rural areas in South Australia and the Northern Territory. We raise all of our own funds to provide epilepsy services and we are constrained because of our financial limitations.

The Epilepsy Centre must further diversify its income generating activities in order to expand services. We need to continue operating prudently and cautiously to ensure that we are able to maintain service delivery and ensure that we continue to support people living with epilepsy and their families.

Our Client Services team has continued to provide a diverse range of services to our clients. Our Northern Territory office in Darwin is now well established thanks to funding from the Thyne Reid Foundation and the Northern Territory Government. We deliver services to wide ranging areas. Our demand is greater than our resources. We need additional funding to continue to operate and to expand our services throughout the Northern Territory.

I intend to continue to build the organisation and move it forward by gaining funding and revenue from new initiatives. Our existing initiatives continue to grow and support from “The Divas” volunteer fundraising group has enabled us to benefit from the proceeds of special events, including “Wear Red Race Day”, Wicked Night Out” and “Boys Day Out”. They have done a fantastic amount of work to make these events successful and I particularly thank Event Manager, Margaret D’Athridge for her dedication, energy and enthusiasm.

Our Call Centre conducts our Bonanza, MEGA Pot of Gold and MEGA Christmas lotteries and they continue to be our main source of revenue. Thank you sincerely to everyone who buys these tickets. We are indebted to you and all our wonderful donors and supporters who enable us to provide all our services free to people and their families living with epilepsy. I thank you all for enabling us to continue to provide services across the last thirty six years.

I thank our team including our Client Services Team, Finance Officer, Office Coordinator, Community Link Call Centre Supervisors and all our team who perform magnificently to achieve our goals. And I convey my sincere appreciation to our amazing and dedicated volunteers, particularly Jane Sievewright. Everyone provides valuable support which enables me to more rapidly progress The Epilepsy Centre’s mission and vision.

I particularly thank our President, Michelle Bellon for her guidance and leadership. I also thank our Treasurer, John Barnett, for the dedicated service that he has provided over many years. I am passionate about the epilepsy cause and it is an honour to serve The Epilepsy Centre and I thank the Board for their continued support and assisting me to lead us forward.

8 It’s been a busy year! The Client Services Team have been working hard at promoting our services and professional standing to organisations, health professionals and across the general community, which has meant we are now receiving an increase in client referrals from GP’s, Neurologists and Allied Health professionals. Our Northern Territory Office continues to grow with increasing numbers of referrals and requests for education sessions across the Territory. This year the Client Services Team has been challenged in many areas, but as the Manager of Client Services I am proud of the commitment and dedication of the Team to rise above and move forward to meet these challenges head on.

Establishing and maintaining partnerships with the many government and non-government agencies across the disability, health and education sectors was just one of those challenges, essential to the delivery of the wide range of services required by our client group. Throughout the year, the Client Services Team continued to focus on further developing its relationships with key organisations such as Disability SA, the Department of Education and Children’s Services (DECS), the Child, Youth and Women’s Health Service, Catholic and Independent schools, individual preschools, childcare facilities, Government and non-government agencies and local councils. Maintaining good lines of communication with each of these organisations will ensure The Epilepsy Centre can continue to advocate for and support clients who use or are in need of extra support from any of these service providers.

EPILEPSY AND SEIZURE CLINICS This year we were successful in gaining a grant from the Thyne Reid Foundation to employ the services of a part time Registered Nurse to run and maintain our Epilepsy and Seizure Clinics within the Flinders Medical Centre, Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Our Client Services Manager continued to maintain Seizure Clinics at the Alice Springs Hospital with visiting Neurologists from The Flinders Medical Centre and Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The Clinics are an integral part of our service delivery model, giving clients more streamlined access to our services such as school care planning, information on seizures, medication and training around the use of Intranasal Midazolam.

COUNSELLING AND SUPPORT Our counsellors continue to work hard delivering support services to our existing clients as well as the growing number of new clients who are either newly diagnosed or have been referred by their doctor for the first time.

Coming to terms with a condition such as epilepsy can have a dramatic impact on the individual and their immediate family. Adapting to life with epilepsy can be quite confronting and counselling can be a useful process for those that are having difficulty dealing with emotions or resolving particular issues. A diagnosis of epilepsy has many ongoing implications for a person’s life and can contribute to the person experiencing many losses. Loss of relationship, loss of license, loss of occupation and loss of identity are but a few of the many secondary effects that can result from the development of epilepsy. Throughout the year our counsellors have conducted multiple counselling sessions with people in their homes, over the phone, in schools, at the Epilepsy Centre and our Epilepsy Clinics, which have assisted with addressing the many and varied challenges that Epilepsy can present.

Over the past year we have dealt with an increase in more complex issues requiring more innovative approaches. A majority of the families and individuals dealing with these complex issues cannot get or are not eligible for existing government services placing more and more pressure on The Epilepsy Centre staff to advocate for and provide solutions for these clients without any financial assistance from the Government.

E-CAMP A highlight for the year was of course our E-camp. This year we saw 50 children, 11 volunteers and 4 staff converge on a camp site at Victor Harbor. Our E-camp program continues to grow and develop and we continue to receive very positive feedback from parents, children and volunteers. Of course our E-camp program is very much reliant on grant funding, which without, would mean our E-camps would not exist. Each camp can cost in excess of $15,000, so sourcing adequate funding avenues is a priority. Not only is E-camp a fun event to attend but it is also a time where children and teenagers can feel safe talking and learning about their condition without the anxiety of feeling judged or outcast. Thank you to all the volunteers for their dedication and support of E-camp and thank you to our Client Services Team for their commitment and enthusiasm in putting E-camp together each year.

FAMILY CAMP Our second Family Camp, held at the Adelaide Shores Caravan Park, was a great success with 21 families attending. This year we were lucky to have a number of dedicated volunteers assist us to take all the children across to The Beachhouse for a couple of hours while many of the parents went shopping or just relaxed back at their cabins. The camp was a great time of sharing and learning and some long lasting friendships were developed. We look forward to our next Family camp.

RURAL AND REMOTE As part of our commitment to provide services across SA and NT we increased our visits to rural and remote areas to deliver services in such places as Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Mt Gambier and Katherine.

SOCIAL NETWORKING The Epilepsy Centre now has its own Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/The-Epilepsy-Centre/140528996054) and twitter account (http://twitter.com/#!/epilepsycentre). Our aim is to provide up to date information to our followers as well as providing an avenue for people to share ideas and thoughts. It has already proven to be a great source of communication and information sharing not only across SA and NT but around the world!

SUMMARY Over the past number of years, The Epilepsy Centre has developed a range of support programs which have assisted individuals and families living with epilepsy. Our aim is to provide people living with epilepsy, with the skills and knowledge to enable them to function and develop as individuals and as a family unit. The Epilepsy Centre is committed to working with families, carers, GPs, Neurologists, allied health professionals and other service providers to meet the needs of each client. Our aim is to increase the opportunity for each person to participate more widely within their community and to live their best life.

1212 Although the Association has experienced another difficult year due to the economic problems we all are subject to it is pleasing to note that there has been a major turnaround in the end of year financial results.

The total deficit to 30th June 2011 was $9,709.00 compared to last year of $252,066, which indicates that we are heading in the right direction. However there is much more to do before our results are satisfying.

It is still extremely difficult to extract funding from Government sources, although it is interesting to note that in all of the other states, the Governments are providing various amounts of funds to support their Associations. So we are reliant on our donors, supporters and members to provide the necessary funds to provide the services to those with epilepsy and their families. These supporters are listed within.

We are ever so grateful for the support we have received from “The Divas” volunteer fund raising group, who arranged the Wear Red Race Day, the “Wicked Night Out” and “Boys Day Out”. I would like again, to commend the management and the staff of our Telemarketing Section for the dedicated manner in which they applied themselves to their work in achieving 100% results in the Mega and other lotteries during the year thus ensuring a flow of funds into the system.

Again, together with our Finance Manager, Elaine, we have managed to maintain a steady cash flow, which again, at times appear difficult.

Due to the instability in the stock market, our share portfolio has suffered a substantial decrease in value, so we have to ride the highs and lows until it recovers.

It has been an interesting year and I have been fortunate enough to have been involved and we all look forward to an upsurge in the future.
