44 SKITOUREN IN DEN DOLOMITEN 45 Cortina d’Ampezzo Rio Gere Pomagagnon Cristallo – Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo Rossa d’Ampezzo Cristallo – Croda Cresta Bianca V a l P a d e o n Unterstand „Buffa di Perrero“ Forcella Staunies Forcella Padeon Ospitale 23 Tofana di Mezzo, 3244 m Schöner und sehr alpiner Gipfel Ausrichtung Südwest – Süd Höhenunterschied 1400 m Aufstiegszeit ca. 5 Std. His invaluable little volume, which appeared in the same year and was the first of its kind, was entitled “Alta Via delle Dolomiti” and bore the number 1. It was published by Tamari Editori of Bologna, with several further editions in sub- sequent years. This Alta Via, just like its famous sister routes, has the peculiar characteristics of a long hike which can be divided up into various days. Refuges and fixed bivouacs can offer comfort at the stop-off points, but for those wishing to emulate the pioneers a tent or a sleeping bag can suffice. The basic route follows paths that are not particularly difficult for an experienced hill-walker, at least those of the Croda dei Tóni and the Antelao; in addition, passages or stretches that are a little rough are always equipped.

DOLOMITI SNOW AND NATURE Glaciers, Nature, Snow and history The Dolomites (Dolomiti) are a beautiful mountain range in northern Italy. Homebase of the snow and sky lovers, this enchanting region offers more than one reason to be astonished: nature, trails, snow, glaciers, and historic sites as well. Our places of choice in the area, where a special tour can be arranged on request, are: Cortina d’Ampezzo Val Gardena: Beautifully situated in the center of a vast valley, the valley d’Ampezzo, crowned by the superb mountain peaks of Cristallo and Tofane, Cortina is the heart of the Dolomiti of the Veneto. The happy setting allows easy access to all the other nearby locations through the “passi”, passes, of Falzarego, Giau and Tre Croci. Cortina is the Queen of the Dolomiti and is the biggest and most famous of the 18 provinces that form the Ladinia. Cortina is situated at the top of the Valle del Boite, and is positioned between Cadore (south) and the Puster Valley(north), Val d' Ansiei (east) and Agordo (west). It is encircled 360° by the Dolomites. Among the more famous mountains are Tofane, Pomagagnon, Cristallo, Faloria and Sorapis, and Becco di Mezzodì, Croda da Lago and Cinque Torri. The city centre is located at an elevation of 1,224 metres (4,016 ft), although the highest summit is that of the Tofana di Mezzo, which towers at 3,244 metres (10,643 ft). There is a significant water presence in the territory, in the form of torrents, streams and little lakes (Ghedina, Pianozes, d'Ajal), which fill particularly during the summer snow-melt season.

Cortina d’Ampezzo www.infodolomiti.it THE DOLOMITES, A WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE SITE Listed by UNESCO for their beauty CORTINA - DOLOMITI and scientific importance Pag. 3 www.infodolomiti.it TRULY UNIQUE MOUNTAINS On 26 June 2009 the Dolomites became a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. This status was awarded for their uniquely beautiful landscape and because of the scientific importance of their geology and geomorphology. The Dolomites are listed as a serial property because, despite its size and diversity, the entire range is considered to be a single unit. This extraordinary “fossil archipelago” consists of nine areas spread over five Italian provinces (Belluno, Bolzano, Pordenone, Trento, Udine), although the Province of Belluno is home to the greatest number of these magnificent peaks. CORTINA D’AMPEZZO An exclusive, elegant resort, loved the world over, Cortina is the beating heart of the Dolomites. Surrounded on every side by such magnificent peaks as Tofane, Cristallo and Pomagagnon, these mountains are all part of the Dolomite World Heritage Site, ma- king it the ideal place to experience the full glory of this exceptio- nal environment, with its stunning array of landscapes each with its own special character. Mountain ranges 1 (Pelmo-Croda da Lago), and 5 (Dolomiti Settentrionali) form a crown around Corti- na and also link with the other Dolomite ranges. This open-air laboratory has been a place of pilgrimage for over 150 years for scientists and students, making it the birthplace of some of the fundamental theories in the earth sciences. Cortina owes its enviable fame not only to the splendour of its landscape, but also to the warm welcome it extends to visitors, playing host to international sporting and cultural events that take on a very special magic when set in this mountain location.
