JACK THE GIANT SLAYER (ROADSHOW)

AN ancient war is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack (Nicholas Hoult), into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom and its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend… and gets the chance to become a legend himself. Acclaimed filmmaker Bryan Singer directs the 3D epic action adventure Jack the Giant Slayer, starring Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) in the title role. The film also stars Eleanor Tomlinson as Princess Isabelle; Stanley Tucci (Captain America: The First Avenger) as the deceitful Lord Roderick; Ian McShane (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, HBO’s Deadwood) as the besieged King Brahmwell; Bill Nighy (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) as the giants’ leader, General Fallon; and Ewan McGregor (Star Wars, The Ghost Writer) as palace guard Elmont. In cinemas on March 21.

WA umpires added to AFL list

THE West Australian Football Commission is proud to announce that two WA umpires have been added to the AFL umpires list for the 2013 season. Goal umpire joins the squad for the first time and boundary umpire Nathan Doig re-joins after withdrawing in 2012 due to work commitments. WAFC High Performance Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair congratulated both umpires on their selection and wished them the best for their careers, saying both were highly deserving of the opportunity. “Luke has made a rapid rise through the goal umpiring ranks, having umpired in the AFL 16s and 18s championships, 2012 WAFL State game and last two WAFL grand finals, all in his first 50 league games,” Sinclair said. Nathan Doig Luke Edwards “Luke was also awarded the Carter Medal in 2012 for the best Goal umpire in the WAFL competition. “For Doig, re-selection to the AFL list is reward for a great 2012 season in which he was selected to umpire his third WAFL grand final. “Our aim at the WAFC is a to provide opportunities for umpires to Other employment opportunities meant that he could not commit to progress along our Talent Pathway, and to see another two umpires the AFL in 2012, but he still gave great service to the WAFL competition. achieve AFL selection is very exciting. The WA Amateur Football League welcomes newly-appointed Integrated Football, now in its fifth year, is a program run by the Integrated Football Coordinator, Greg Gilbee. WA Amateur Football League. It provides players living with intellectual disabilities, the ability to play football in a fun, safe and structured competition. WAAFL General Manager, David Armstrong, said he was happy with the appointment and excited for the upcoming season. “The Integrated League has a lot of potential to grow and with the right direction can become the sustainable league we envisage,” he said. Mr Armstrong said one of Gilbee’s major challenges for the year ahead was to build on the success the Integrated League had experienced over the past seasons. Growing the competition is one of the main priorities for Gilbee, with the Cockburn Lakes Football Club showing interest and agreeing to host an Integrated team in the near future. Gilbee said the Shire of Cockburn was very eager to assist Cockburn Lakes FC in building a team and that the beginning stages were already Above: 2012 winners Lynwood-Ferndale taking place. Below: Grand fi nalists Fremantle CBC Gold The five WAAFL clubs fielding teams in this year’s competition are Kingsway FC, High Wycombe AFC, Warnbro Swans FC, Lynwood Ferndale FC and Fremantle CBC AFC. Fremantle CBC, a strong team in the competition and winners of the inaugural Integrated grand final, will host two teams in the competition for the second year in a row. The WAAFL clubs that are involved are always looking for new players to help grow the game and get the intellectually disabled further involved with the community. Those living with intellectual disabilities are urged to come and engage in a game now being played all over Australia. Integrated games are played fortnightly and held after WAAFL club home games. Fixtures can be found on the WAAFL site, with Round 1 kicking off on April 13. The third Integrated grand final will be played on Sunday, September 1. During 2013, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

WAFL’s busy trading period

Well, as promised last week, I’m going to start this column by highlighting a few more of the WAFL collectables which sold over summer. Along with the usual pile of Registers, Budgets and cards, there were also quite a few interesting and rarely-seen items, some of which were featured last week. First for this week, I did promise to report the auction price on one of the Darbyshire urchins, based on Paul Rigby’s famous character, which I had been unable to obtain by the time last week’s Budget went to print. The Perth urchin reached only $880 at auction, perhaps indicating that the days of attaining prices of up to $1500 for them are over. A South Fremantle urchin, though damaged, fetched only $1000 in October. Among the other more kitsch items to sell was a boot-shaped port bottle, in the style which featured in this column last year. These were part of the WAFL’s early 80s mass marketing push and the South Fremantle version which appeared at auction sold for $118. I can’t remember one of these going higher. An East Fremantle version sold last year for $70, while a Subiaco version went even cheaper. But, back to the summer sales. The ever-popular membership badges popped up a few times and reached some interesting prices. An undated East Perth badge sold for $52, a 1959 Royals badge for $94, a 1967 South Fremantle badge for $108, a 1964 East Fremantle badge for $132 and a 1961 Swan Districts badge for the ridiculous price of $202. Before you frantically dig out your badges and send them to market, you should always keep in mind that the WAFL collectables scene is hugely volatile. Removing the bidders who won those particular badges from any future auction of the same badges could see the price drop massively. I’ll feature some more results from the summer sales next week. There were also quite a few club history books available over the summer period. Each traditional club has produced at least one history book over the years and many have produced more than one. East Fremantle was the first to bring one out. It was written by turn- of-the-century star Dolph Heinrichs in 1947 and a copy recently sold for $90. Journalist Jack Lee wrote a later history of the Sharks, which covered the period 1948-1976. A copy sold for $29. And, a Swan Districts history book, produced in 1974, sold for $23. Further on history books, South FremaFremantle supporters might like to kkeepeep their eyes peeled for a new clclubub history, which is due to be releasedrelea late this year. Their last versionvers was done in 1976 and clearlyclea needs updating. Meanwhile,Me I’m looking for a copyco of The Royals 1906-1976, wwritten by Matthew Glossop, toto complete my collection of clubc history books. If anyone isis willing to part with one, please get in touch. If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, GPO Box N1025, Perth WA, 6843.
