ISFFEI Sponsors Tips for trip Updated on 22 September 2010 Valencia Home of 8 th ISFFEI Dear Fruit fly workers, SPONSORS The venue of the 8th ISFFEI is very close, next 26th we will meet in Valencia city. We hope to have all you here attending it and meeting with your fruit-fly friends of all around the globe. We have planned a condensed meeting for four days, for ending with a technical trip to the Mass-rearing and Release facilities at Caudete de las Fuentes and Moncada respectively. Our first thought of developing parallel sessions has been changed by a single auditorium on which all the conferences will take place without the need of choosing which to attend. On behalf of the Organizing Committee I wish you to have a nice trip to Valencia. Sincerely yours, Dr. Alberto Urbaneja Chairman of 8th ISFFEI

< Back to Venue & Accomodation What to see in the city of Valencia? main page A Brief History SPONSORS

Founded by the Romans as Valentia in 138 a.c. in greek-carthaginians settlement, Valencia has been the home of many cultures over its history: Romans, Visigoths, Moors and the Aragonese all made the city an important cultural and financial centre. In the year 1094, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, called El Cid Campeador, conquered Valencia on behalf of the Christians, but the city later fell to the Almoravids in 1102. Following the Moorish domination, it was in 1238 that Jaime I of Aragon finally reconquered the city, and founded the Kingdom of Valencia, with its characteristic legislative privileges (Furs). During the 15th and 16th centuries, Valencia became one of the major economic powers on the Mediterranean seaboard. It was the time of the Valencian siglo de oro (Golden Age), which was characterized by splendour in the arts at the hands of Joanot Martorell (author of Tirant lo Blanc, the first modern European novel), Ausias March, Roig de Corella, Isabel de Villena, Jordi de Sant Jordi and Jaume Roig, among others. During the War of Spanish Succession, Valencia sided with archduke Charles of Austria, and after the victory of the Borbons at the Battle of Almansa (April 1707), Felipe V abolished the local privileges (Fueros). In 1874, Alfonso XII was proclaimed constitutional king at Sagunto city in the north of Valencia. When democracy was restored, the Land of Valencia was given its present Autonomous Statutes in 1982. The history of the city, now the capital of the Land of Valencia, is both rich and varied, providing a patrimony that has converted it into one of the major cities in Spain on both cultural and economic levels. Valencia is now the capital of Valencia Region, and counts with 800,000 censed people.

This rich history can be traced in all the city … just take a guided walk tour in the city center to see all this rich patrimony! Enjoy the 21th Century part of the city by visiting the 'Ciutat de les Arts I les Ciències'

If you stay till 9th October, you could see the Valencia' day celebration with institutional parades with the descending of Valencia flag through the City Hall, and taste the traditional Gargoyle with bat wings, is an icon of the and unique sweets and cakes of this day (see pictures at left). city of Valencia which is present in the city . For those overseas delegates that arrive at main capitals in Europe (London, Paris, Madrid), SPONSORS reaching Valencia city can be by Plane or Train (only from Paris or Madrid). Valencia is located in the east coast of Spain, at 354 km at east of Madrid and at 351 km at south of Barcelona, and can be reached by fast trains or by plane (in less than 1 hr).

By Plane Valencia Airport is located in the nearby town of Manises, about 8 km at west from the city. Flights arriving from major Spanish and European cities land there. Valencia connects with destinations all over the world through Madrid and Barcelona international airports, with some exceptions, direct flight to New York (planned early in 2010) and Casablanca (Morocco). The main operating company are IBERIA, AIRNOSTRUM and AIREUROPA, but this airport also operates with low cost companies (Clickair, Ryanair) which connect Paris, London, Amsterdam and Lisbon directly to Valencia.

Timetables, fares and planes are available here. Getting line 3 you must change to line 4 at Benimaclet stop, then get off at second UPV stop called La Carrasca. The Galileo Galilei building is located in front of this underground EXHIBITORS exit. The underground in this part of the city runs in surface as a tram, so you can easily see the UPV Campus while approaching.

By Train Valencia is located in the east coast of Spain, at 354 km at east of Madrid and at 351 km at south of Barcelona, and can be reached by trains from this two cities in less than 3 hr. Poster format & Proceedings book’ paper format

Poster format SPONSORS

Posters should be print in a maximum size of 90 x 120 cm (wide x high; portrait). It‟s advisable to include a picture of the presenting delegate in the right upper corner, to allow an easy identification of the same during the poster show. Please consider to add the same parts as those you presented in the submitted abstract, but in this case, don‟t forget to add contact information. Acknowledgement and granting institutions can be included if appropriate in your case. Select your own font type but select the appropriate font size to allow easy reading of the poster from 2 m distance. Colour and design are at your own free well … be an artist creating the most attractive poster!!

Before printing your poster consider to ask to your travel agency about your travel with it. As we have been informed that some low-cost companies are asking for a extra cost for the poster plastic container as they consider it another hand baggage… or some are lost if sent along your baggage. One idea is to print your poster on special tissue (named Fabritex® in Spain …) that allows you to fold your printed poster and kept it with your clothes in your main baggage without too much creasing. Ask in your printer service as this is becoming very popular („canvas‟ will not allow you to fold your poster and get it later without creasing) within overseas delegates in scientific congresses.

Remember to send a pdf of your poster by 20th September (to [email protected]) for its inclusion in the USB key with all the information of the 8th ISFFEI. This USB key will be distributed among all participants, as the CD distributed in the past edition of the Symposium in Brazil.

Instructions to Poster presenters

A Poster Information desk will be located within one of the Poster rooms. In this desk you will found your poster board number and double side tape to affix the poster to the poster board. Posters should be mounted on the poster boards early on Monday 27th September and will be hold during all the week. Posters must be removed on Thursday 30th September at 18h. Any poster not removed will be taken down by the organisers and stored till Technical visit. Poster not collected during Technical visit will be discarded. EXHIBITORS A presentation certificate will be delivered to the presenting delegate after poster holding in the Poster Desk. Only one certificate, listing all the contributing authors, will be distributed for each poster.
