  • The Perfect Way by Anna Bonus Kingsford and Edward Maitland the Perfect Way Or the Finding of Christ
The Perfect Way by Anna Bonus Kingsford and Edward Maitland The Perfect Way or The Finding of Christ by Anna Bonus Kingsford and Edward Maitland Published in 1888 Boston, Mass.: ESOTERIC PUBLISHING COMPANY, 478 Shawmut Avenue. (Revised and Enlarged Edition.) Page 1 The Perfect Way by Anna Bonus Kingsford and Edward Maitland AUTHORS’ EXPLANATION These lectures were delivered in London, before a private audience, in the months of May, June, and July, 1881. The changes made in this edition calling for indication, are, – the substitution of another Lecture for No. V., and consequent omission of most of the plates; the rewriting, in the whole or part, of paragraphs 6 - 8 and 28 in No. I.; 34 - 36 in No. II.; 5 - 8, 12, 13, 22, 23, 42, 43, 54, and 55, in No. IX. (the latter paragraphs being replaced by a new one); the lengthening of Appendices II, and VI; the addition of a new Part to Appendix XIII. (formerly No. IX); and the substitution of eight new Appendices for Nos:. VII., and VIII. The alterations involve no change or withdrawal of doctrine, but only extension of scope, amplification of statement, or modification of expression. A certain amount of repetition being inseparable from the form adopted, – that of a series of expository lectures, each requiring to be complete in itself, – and the retention of that form being unavoidable, – no attempt has been made to deal with the instances in which repetition occurs. PREFACE TO THE AMERICAN EDITION In presenting an American edition of THE PERFECT WAY, or, The Finding of Christ, to the reading and inquiring public, we have been actuated by the conviction that a comprehensive textbook of the “new views,” or the restored wisdom and knowledge of the ages regarding religion or the perfect life, was imperatively required, wherein the subject was treated in a manner luminous, instructive, and entertaining, and which, without abridgement, or inferiority of material or workmanship, could yet be sold at a price that would bring the work within the means of the general public.

INTRODUCTION We note that the inquiry terms of reference include: (1) inquiring into and reporting upon measures to address the promotion of ‘unscientific’ health- related information or practices that depart from ‘accepted medical practice’ which may be detrimental to individual or public health, with focus on individuals and organisations that are not ‘recognised’ health practitioners (Terms of Reference (a), (b) and (c)). • WHAT IS NEW SINCE OUR LAST NEWSLETTER? the Power of One! in 2017, Canadian Resident, Andrea Macgregor, Entered Her Final Semester of College
Newsletter 16 - 23 June 2017 WHAT IS NEW SINCE OUR LAST NEWSLETTER? The Power of One! In 2017, Canadian resident, Andrea MacGregor, entered her final semester of college. Hating pseudoscience, and despite being in the middle of exams, when she realised that acupuncture was being endorsed by a prestigious Toronto-based children’s hospital, she took them on. They listened – and acted. Following a complaint by FSM to Advertising Standards Canada (ASC), the authority responded that they could not submit it to their Council because the Hospital for Sick Children (Sickkids), which ranked number two on Canadian top 40 research hospitals for 2016, endorsed acupuncture. When she heard this, Andrea rose to the challenge and wrote to the hospital, citing the response from ASC, and including informed opinions from 28 experts from 10 countries. Sickkids passed her e-mail onto their internal teams (which included the specialists within their Pain Centre) and, after reviewing their research and the information she provided, removed the document titled “acupuncture may help ease chronic pain in young people”. They are now reviewing all their information on complementary and alternative medicine. Well done Andrea! In a public letter, Andrea raised her concerns about the American College of Physicians (ACP), who recommend acupuncture as a non-pharmacologic treatment. Following the ACP publication, health practitioners world-wide continue to cite this prestigious college as ‘evidence’ that acupuncture works because it “formally recommends acupuncture for the treatment of back pain”. The response from the ACP was to suggest that Andrea write a comment on the article. When major health institutions or universities publish pro-CAM information, they are used worldwide by alternative practitioners, their associations, and people with vested interests, as ‘evidence’.

It seeks to reappraise an existing historical picture in which the growth of scientific rationalism is seen as leading to a growing divide between the mentahties and medical practices of élites and those of the rest of society. Rather than treating these two groups as polar opposites the thesis examines the means by which they interacted. This is chiefly based on an examination of commonplace books which, from the Renaissance onwards, were central to the way in which literate laymen and women recorded information both from printed and manuscript material and from talking with others.

  • Eastern Medicine Renaissance in the Context of Japanese Rule, 1910-1945
KOREANS BUILDING A NEW WORLD: EASTERN MEDICINE RENAISSANCE IN THE CONTEXT OF JAPANESE RULE, 1910-1945 by James Flowers A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland August 2019 © 2019 James Flowers All Rights Reserved Abstract In the early twentieth century, Western biomedicine physicians achieved elite status on a global scale as bearers of scientific progress. As part of this process of change in medicine, in many countries traditional medicine healers became marginalized and even obsolete. This dissertation examines the unusual case of the traditional medicine healers in Korea organizing themselves in unprecedented ways within the context of Japanese colonial rule from 1910 to 1945. By following the central theme of Korean agency in “building a new world” via what they then termed Eastern Medicine and Hanbang healing, this study evaluates how elite registered physicians, mainly based in modern-day Seoul (Part one and two), and non-registered physicians, mainly working in rural localities (Part three), actively responded to broader modernizing efforts in the context of Japanese rule by doubling down on the value of their own traditional medical doctrines and practices. The Japanese Government-General introduced a decree on Physician Registration in 1913, hoping to marginalize the “old” Eastern-medicine physicians. Instead of surrendering, the Eastern-medicine physicians organized themselves by forming associations, publishing journals and books, and holding symposia. They made the case for Eastern medicine’s continuing relevance and necessity by articulating the need to strengthen Korean bodies and minds with traditional healing therapies.

The existing order provided for the child Lara (not her real name) to share her time equally between her parents’ homes, but that has not reliably happened for some time. The trial judge, HHJ Meston QC accepted the entirety of the father’s case about the cause of the difficulties in this family. He found that a process of alienation of Lara from her father had begun in the context of the mother’s adherence to Universal Medicine, an organisation founded in Australia in 1999 by Serge Benhayon and held by the judge to be a cult.
