Urban Forestry in Sabah
URBAN FORESTRY AND ITS RELEVANCE TO TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN SABAH* Y.F. Lee, J. Ligunjang & S.C. Yong Forestry Department, Sabah, Malaysia Abstract Urban forestry is understood to be the management of trees and forests in urban areas. It yields many environmental and material benefits. In Sabah, the environmental services of urban forestry are more important than material products. The potential of practising urban forestry in various zones and under different land ownership is evaluated. As urbanisation has occurred recently in Sabah, urban forestry has only been practised to a limited extent. Tourism is an economic sector which has gained prominence in recent years and has huge growth potential. With the numerous environmental services provided by urban forestry to make urban areas more inhabitable, the increasing tourism activities necessitate intensification of urban forestry activities. The main urban centres contain many tourist attractions, and are also the gateways to many other ecotourist destinations located throughout Sabah. With tourism high on the development agenda in Sabah, urban forestry needs to be promoted so that both locals and visitors can enjoy the numerous social, environmental and economic benefits. *Paper presented in the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) Symposium on Urban Forestry, Suzhou & Beijing, China, November 29 – December 3, 2004. 1 1. Introduction Urban forestry is generally understood to be the management of trees and forests within urban areas. However, the terms “urban settlements” and “urban forestry” are sometimes ambiguous. For the sake of clarity, these terms are first discussed and defined. The term “urban settlement” can be understood in many ways. Although one may know intuitively what is ‘urban’ and what is ‘rural’, there is no universally accepted criteria for distinguishing between these two types of settlements. -

© Lonely Planet 338 Sabah Malaysia’s state of Sabah proves that there is a god, and we’re pretty sure that he’s some sort of mad scientist. Sabah was his giant test tube – the product of a harebrained hypothesis. You see, on the seventh day, god wasn’t taking his infamous rest, he was pondering the following: ‘what would happen if I took an island, covered it with impenetrable jungle, tossed in an ark’s worth of animals, and turned up the temperature to a sweltering 40°C?’ The result? A tropical Eden with prancing mega-fauna and plenty of fruit-bearing trees. SABAH SABAH This ‘land below the wind’, as it’s known, is home to great ginger apes that swing from vine-draped trees, blue-hued elephants that stamp along marshy river deltas and sun-kissed wanderers who slide along the silver sea in bamboo boats. Oh but there’s more: mighty Mt Kinabalu rises to the heavens, governing the steamy wonderland below with its impos- ing stone turrets. The muddy Sungai Kinabatangan roars through the jungle – a haven for fluorescent birds and cheeky macaques. And finally there’s Sipadan’s seductive coral reef, luring large pelagics with a languid, come-hither wave. In order to make the most of your days of rest, we strongly encourage you to plan ahead. Sabah’s jungles may be wild and untamed, but they’re covered in streamers of red tape. With a bit of patience and a lot of preplanning, you’ll breeze by the permit restrictions and booked beds. -

Observation on Signboard Photographs in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah As Indicator of Change Towards Global Business1
Journal of Global Business and Social Entrepreneurship (GBSE) Vol. 1: no. 4 (2017) page 35–44| gbse.com.my | eISSN 24621714| OBSERVATION ON SIGNBOARD PHOTOGRAPHS IN KOTA KINABALU, SABAH AS INDICATOR OF CHANGE TOWARDS GLOBAL BUSINESS1 Suhaimi Salleh2 Noraini Abdullah3 Abstract This paper reports on the study of signboards' designs and words, not often studied in Malaysia, as research variables. Treating these designs and words as valid variables the writers attempted to examine signboards as indicators of change. Data in the form of photographs of shops signage, taken in various locations in Kota Kinabalu were analysed and described to determine what aspects of the signboards would provide the desired indicators. The choice of designs, languages, words, colours, graphics, positions and complimentary signages were coded and entered into SPSS for ease of analysis. These were then discussed in relation to the socio-economic and geographical attributes to ascertain what kind of indicators were identifiable. This study tried to identify what background and words, colours and languages were the top choices in the the making of the signages. Analyses of the signboards facade will identify whether the design and wordings as variables can be described as 'conventional', 'unconventional' or 'recent' with several possibly unchanged over time with designs and wordings traceable to signage designs which were usually up to the period several decades ago. Preliminary findings of this study showed that the signboards of shops within the areas of Kota Kinabalu City and two neighbouring towns (Manggatal and Telipok) in the zone of Kota Kinabalu, were not compliant to the guidelines prescribed by the relevant authorities. -
Sabah Development Corridor 30 CHAPTER 2
sabah development corridor _30 CHAPTER 2 A Land of Diverse Natural Beauty sabah development corridor _31 sabah development corridor _32 CHAPTER 2 Build High-Margin Services Sector in Tourism and Logistics 2.1 Current Context The services sector is a major contributor to Sabah’s GDP. Its share of Sabah’s GDP was 48.9% in 2005, in which wholesale and retail trade, and government services were the highest contributors, each contributing 24.4% and 21.7% respectively. The services industry also provides the highest number of jobs: 639,000 persons were employed in the services sector in 2006, which accounted for 53.3% of total employment in Sabah1. Tourism is envisaged to be the key driver for the services sector in Sabah and the programmes outlined in this chapter have taken into account the existing local tourism masterplans of the state. 2.2 Tourism The vision for tourism is to make Sabah among the most liveable places in Asia by 2025. This will be achieved over a three-phase period: Phase 1 will focus on addressing the basics to support tourism development and laying the foundations for future growth. World-class tourism infrastructure and services will be put in place, including nurturing a vibrant arts and culture scene. Phase 2 will focus on strengthening Sabah’s position as a premier eco-adventure destination through conservation, research and sustainable development of new tourism products anchored by signature resorts. Phase 3 will see Sabah being transformed into one of the most liveable places in Asia – a bustling metropolis within a tropical paradise.
