This Instrument may be cited as the Putatan District Council Instrument 2010. 2. In this Instrument — "Council" means the Putatan District Council established under clause 3; “member” means a member of the Council appointed under clause 6; "Ordinance" means the Local Government Ordinance 1961. 3. There is hereby established a council to be known as the Putatan District Council. 4. (1) The limits of the area under the jurisdiction of the Council are as prescribed in the First Schedule. (2) The area set out in the Second Schedule is declared to be a township to be known as Putatan Township. 5. URBAN FORESTRY AND ITS RELEVANCE TO TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN SABAH* Y.F. Lee, J. Ligunjang & S.C. Yong Forestry Department, Sabah, Malaysia Abstract Urban forestry is understood to be the management of trees and forests in urban areas. It yields many environmental and material benefits. In Sabah, the environmental services of urban forestry are more important than material products. The potential of practising urban forestry in various zones and under different land ownership is evaluated. As urbanisation has occurred recently in Sabah, urban forestry has only been practised to a limited extent. Tourism is an economic sector which has gained prominence in recent years and has huge growth potential. With the numerous environmental services provided by urban forestry to make urban areas more inhabitable, the increasing tourism activities necessitate intensification of urban forestry activities. The main urban centres contain many tourist attractions, and are also the gateways to many other ecotourist destinations located throughout Sabah. With tourism high on the development agenda in Sabah, urban forestry needs to be promoted so that both locals and visitors can enjoy the numerous social, environmental and economic benefits. *Paper presented in the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) Symposium on Urban Forestry, Suzhou & Beijing, China, November 29 – December 3, 2004. 1 1. Introduction Urban forestry is generally understood to be the management of trees and forests within urban areas. However, the terms “urban settlements” and “urban forestry” are sometimes ambiguous. For the sake of clarity, these terms are first discussed and defined. The term “urban settlement” can be understood in many ways. Although one may know intuitively what is ‘urban’ and what is ‘rural’, there is no universally accepted criteria for distinguishing between these two types of settlements. -

PENGENALAN KEPADA NEGERI SABAH Negeri Sabah yang sering dirujuk sebagai Negeri di Bawah Bayu merupakan satu daripada 14 negeri yang terdapat di Malaysia dan negeri kedua terbesar di Malaysia selepas Sarawak. Sabah terletak di utara pulau Borneo iaitu pulau ketiga terbesar di dunia dan Ibu negeri Sabah ialah Kota Kinabalu yang dahulunya dikenali sebagai Jesselton. Bahasa Malaysia adalah bahasa kebangsaan yang dituturkan hampir seluruh etnik di negeri ini dengan dialek Sabah yang dipanggil Baku. Bahasa pribumi seperti Kadazan Dusun, Bajau dan Murut turut menjadi pertuturan utama. Secara geografinya, bahagian barat Sabah adalah kawasan pergunungan dengan Banjaran Crocker yang merupakan banjaran dengan ketinggian sekitar 1,000 hingga 4,000 meter. Gunung Kinabalu (4,095 meter) merupakan gunung yang tertinggi di Kepulauan Borneo dan diiktiraf sebagai antara sepuluh gunung tertinggi di Asia Tenggara. B. PENDUDUK NEGERI SABAH Penduduk Sabah bertambah daripada 3.89 juta pada 2018 kepada 3.90 juta pada 2019 dengan kadar pertumbuhan penduduk tahunan 0.2 peratus. Komposisi penduduk warganegara pada 2019 ialah 71.1 peratus daripada keseluruhan penduduk Sabah. Struktur umur penduduk dikategorikan kepada tiga kumpulan umur utama iaitu umur muda, umur bekerja dan umur tua. Peratusan penduduk kumpulan umur bekerja dan umur tua di Sabah mencatatkan peningkatan dari 2015 hingga 2019. Pada 2019, peratusan umur muda menurun kepada 23.4 peratus (2018: 23.7%) manakala peratusan penduduk -

Sabah was his giant test tube – the product of a harebrained hypothesis. You see, on the seventh day, god wasn’t taking his infamous rest, he was pondering the following: ‘what would happen if I took an island, covered it with impenetrable jungle, tossed in an ark’s worth of animals, and turned up the temperature to a sweltering 40°C?’ The result? A tropical Eden with prancing mega-fauna and plenty of fruit-bearing trees. SABAH SABAH This ‘land below the wind’, as it’s known, is home to great ginger apes that swing from vine-draped trees, blue-hued elephants that stamp along marshy river deltas and sun-kissed wanderers who slide along the silver sea in bamboo boats. Oh but there’s more: mighty Mt Kinabalu rises to the heavens, governing the steamy wonderland below with its impos- ing stone turrets. The muddy Sungai Kinabatangan roars through the jungle – a haven for fluorescent birds and cheeky macaques. And finally there’s Sipadan’s seductive coral reef, luring large pelagics with a languid, come-hither wave. In order to make the most of your days of rest, we strongly encourage you to plan ahead. Sabah’s jungles may be wild and untamed, but they’re covered in streamers of red tape. With a bit of patience and a lot of preplanning, you’ll breeze by the permit restrictions and booked beds. -

Dominic Yeo-Koh sg Dear Staff Members,Trainees, Boarders and Friends of Montfort, Brothers of Saint Gabriel, District of South East Asia Peace be with you and as the Lord says “Peace is what I leave with you, it is my own peace that I give you” John 14:27 It gives me great pleasure to greet everyone. Time flies with such tremendous pace that BOARD OF GOVERNORS half of 2019 has passed and gone by in such a short time. If we look back at Montfort Youth Training Centre (MYTC), it began its journey 20 years ago in 1999 in a small and humble setup in Donggongon, Penampang, Sabah with only 15 Trainees. The Chairman journey has been challenging but with perseverance, MYTC managed to grow to its Tan Sri present state where it is now hosting to more than 200 Trainees and Boarders at our (Datuk Seri Panglima) centres in Kinarut, Kiulu and Sandakan. Bernard Giluk Dompok The Province of Malaysia-Singapore-Myanmar is now known as the District of South East Asia comprising Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar and the Philippines. This new Members District, which was formed on 25 March, comes under the jurisdiction of the new Province of Bengaluru in India and there are currently 22 fully professed Brothers in YBhg Datuk Margaret Fung the new District. We pray ardently for more vocations to the religious lives especially to the Brothers of St Gabriel so that the legacy of our Founder, St Louis Marie de YBhg Datuk Montfort, will continue to live on.
