EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Hurricane Maria made landfall on the southern coast of Puerto Rico around 6:15 AM EDT on Wednesday, September 20, after passing approximately 15 miles south-southwest of St. Croix. As of Sunday, Maria continues is moving north, in the western Atlantic, 530 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras. DOE is supporting response efforts for Hurricane Maria and continues to support restoration efforts from both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. ESF #12 responders are deployed to St. Thomas and St. Croix in support of FEMA Incident Management Assistance Teams and responders are staged to deploy Puerto Rico. ESF #12 responders are also deployed to the National Response Coordination Center and an advanced team from the Western Area Power Administration is on St. Thomas to provide mutual aid support to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Responders in Florida have demobilized. Electricity Sector Summary (as of 2:30 PM EDT Sunday) • Florida: 7,851 customer outages (<1% of total state customers) • Puerto Rico: Nearly all 1.57 million electricity customers in Puerto Rico continue to be without power following the Hurricane Maria. This finding is contrary to previous studies, which found that hermit crabs of other species cannot kill gastropods or, in most instances, remove freshly dead gastropods from their shells. This interaction cannot be classified as predation because Melongena tissue was never consumed. -

The evolutionary adaptations and practices of many gastropod shells, as our average of over 18 shells per quadrat species are geared towards protection against threats that can was substantial. Additionally, we found that hermit crabs are indeed interiors with room to grow, marine hermit crabs in particular tend to selective on the basis of aperture type, with C. tricolor chose shells that are thicker and heavier because of their increased individuals preferentially selecting shells with a teardrop-shaped defense capacity, despite their limitations for growth (Alcaraz, aperture, and other hermit crabs preferentially selecting shells Chávez-Solís, & Kruesi, 2015). -

FERGUSON Fish and Wildlife Research Institute Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission 2796 Overseas Highway, Suite 119 Marathon, Florida 33050 USA ABSTRACT Reef-dwelling snappers support valuable commercial and recreational fisheries. Snappers have been reported to use seagrass habitat as a primary nursery area in south Florida waters, although it is still largely unknown where newly recruited and early-juvenile stages of snappers are settling in the waters of the Florida Keys. Previous studies largely have been unsuccessful in locating and collecting these young-of-the-year fishes in seagrass beds. In order to determine the feasibility of collecting early-life stages of snappers in shallow (< 1.3m depth), nearshore seagrass beds and to describe snapper abundance and distribution, we conducted a six-month (June through Novem- ber 2003), stratified-random-design pilot study using 21 m seines on the Atlantic side of the Middle Keys. We collected relatively high numbers of snappers (n = 363), of which more than half were settlement-stage individuals, including 69 new recruits (< 20 mm SL) and 131 early-stage juveniles (> 20 and < 40 mm SL). Mean standard length overall was 36 mm. The most abundant snapper collected was Lutjanus griseus. Snappers recruited consis- tently during the sampling period, and abundance did not significantly differ between months. -

Presently we have 120 undergraduates who are declared majors in the Interdisciplinary Studies Marine Sciences major between the two colleges. Our collaboratively administered Marine Sciences major is multi-disciplinary and broad in scope; every student takes courses across the fields of biology, chemistry, geology, and physics of marine, estuarine, and coastal environments, as well as the conservation and management of marine resources. Our interdisciplinary approach allows students to tailor a curriculum that suits their interests and career goals by emphasizing the physical or biological sciences (CLAS track) or the fields of ecology, conservation, and management (CALS track).
