RESUMO John Keats (1795-1821) foi um dos principais poetas a escrever durante o apogeu do movimento romântico inglês, sendo hoje considerado como um escritor canónico no âmbito da Literatura Inglesa. Tendo em conta o panorama da tradução de obras inglesas para português europeu, e atentando à importância deste autor no sistema literário de partida, verifica-se que grande parte da sua obra não se encontra traduzida em Portugal. Neste contexto, o objectivo final da presente dissertação será procurar apurar as razões de tal fenómeno de não-tradução, traçando, para o efeito, um historial da recepção do poeta no sistema literário português. Partir-se-á, assim, de um estudo do romantismo inglês e da sua influência em Portugal, assim como em França, país que frequentemente ocupou uma função de mediador entre as culturas inglesa e portuguesa, até meados do século XX. Em seguida, estudar-se-á o papel e a presença de John Keats nestes sistemas culturais, prestando particular atenção à realidade oitocentista. Nesta fase serão enumeradas e criticadas todas as traduções portuguesas encontradas do autor em apreço, assim como a bibliografia ensaística escrita no país sobre Keats e a sua obra poética. Finalmente, a dissertação incidirá sobre a não-tradução generalizada de poetas românticos ingleses durante o século XIX português, salvo raras excepções que serão devidamente mencionadas. A tipologia da não-tradução proposta por João Ferreira Duarte será adoptada para se procurar explicar os motivos da escassa tradução de John Keats em Portugal. Palavras-Chave: (não-)tradução, romantismo, recepção, mediação, crítica ABSTRACT John Keats (1795-1821) was one of the main poets active during the zenith of English Romanticism. Today, he is widely regarded as a canonical writer in the scope of English Literature. As such, and taking into account the frequent translation of English works in Portugal, it is somewhat unexpected to find that the majority of his poetry remains untranslated in the country. The aim of this dissertation is, therefore, to attempt to identify the reasons of said non-translation, mainly through the analysis of the historical remnants of the reception of Keats in the Portuguese literary system. The first course of action is therefore to study English Romanticism and its influence in Portugal, as well as in France, which often occupied the position of mediator between these two cultures, up until the mid-twentieth century. The presence of Keats in these cultural systems is then examined, with special attention being paid to the reality of the eighteenth century in each country. This chapter also contains all of the Portuguese translations found of Keats’ poetry, with each being individually criticized, as well as an assortment of the bibliography written in Portugal regarding the poet and his literary work. The third chapter concerns the generalized non-translation of English romantic poets during the eighteenth century in Portugal, barring some specific cases which are properly stated. The typology of non- translation suggested by João Ferreira Duarte is adopted in order to attempt to explain the reasons behind the low amount of Portuguese translations of John Keats. Dinis como língua oficial das Cortes do país no final do século XIII. Embora o próprio D. Dinis fosse um propulsor da prática tradutória, terá sido apenas por volta de Quatrocentos que a tradução teve o seu primeiro grande impulso no país, envolvendo obras originalmente escritas em latim. Tratava-se, na maioria dos casos, de textos de cariz governativo e administrativo, textos bíblicos, bulas papais e afins.1 A. A. Gonçalves Rodrigues considera o ano de 1495

He had already begun writing poetry, but he earned his pharmacist’s license before abandoning medicine for the literary world. In 1818, he published his first major work, Endymion, a long poem that critics panned. Their negative reviews were due in part to Keats’s association with the radical writer Leigh Hunt. The reviews also reflected the uneven quality of the verse itself. Despite the critical rejection, Keats did not swerve from his new career.

    POPULARIZING CHAUCER IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY by Charlotte C. Morse Charles Cowden Clarke (1787–1877), Charles Knight (1791–1873), and John Saunders (1810–1895) were the most effective boosters of Chaucer’s common readership before the university in the mid-1860s took over the care and promotion of Middle English language and literature, includ- ing Chaucer.1 All three popularizers came of age in the wake of the French Revolution, which reinforced and magnified whatever nationalist impulses were already at work in nascent pan-European Romanticism. Ideas of a people united by shared culture rather than by allegiance to a king made the invention and promotion of a literary tradition a desideratum for every nation. Thanks especially to J. G. Herder, the nationalism produced by and in reaction to the French Revolution gave language a newly impor- tant role in defining the nation and granted exceptional political value to the nation’s literary and folk culture for its capacity both to unify and to stimulate continuing negotiation with tradition, essential to the per- petuation of the national community.2 In England the Revolution exerted contrary pressures, to reaction or to reform. Those in favor of reform understood that the political class, those with political rights, had to expand. Some asserted literacy as a basic human right.3 In this yeasty atmosphere, Cowden Clarke and Knight came of age; Saunders came to manhood in the run-up to the Reform Bill of 1832. All three identified with the reformist politics of the early decades of the century, when Henry Brougham, later Chancellor, led the parlia- mentary committee that aimed to improve mass education in England.4 The three popularizers believed that Chaucer’s poetry, like Shakespeare’s drama, should belong to all Englishmen.

It discusses brief instances from various writers of the two periods and moves on to a more developed comparison between Wordsworth and Edward Lear, centring on ‘The Blind Highland Boy’. The comparison between periods leads to an argument that self- critique and scepticism were quite robustly in place from the start in the romantic period, and that obstacles to sense could at times be experienced not just as perplexity but as enjoyment shared with an audience. It also points to a further appreciation of some of the less canonical works by the most canonical writers, and suggests a tradition in which romantic aspiration was often coolly linked to a sense of absurdity.     Haunted Metre: Wordsworth’s Subliminal Lyric by Adrian Harding (Université de Provence & American University in Paris) Given Wordsworth’s condemnation, in the 1800 Preface to the Lyrical Ballads, of the “frantic novels, sickly and stupid German tragedies, and deluges of idle and extravagant stories in verse,” exciting the reading public’s “degrading thirst after outrageous stimulation” (LB 249), it has been customary to approach his relations to the Gothic in terms of readerships, grounded on or eventually grounding a sociology of reception. In this paper I am assuming the transference of the Gothic charge more intimately upon Coleridge, despite the latter’s own disparagement of the seductions of Gothic literature, as in the (perhaps strategic) letter of 27 December 1802 to Mary Robinson: “My head turns giddy, my heart sickens at the very thought of seeing such books in the hands of a child of mine” (Griggs, 94). The terms of Coleridge's condemnation of the Gothic provide a counterpart to Wordsworth's lyric phenomenology: “combinations of the highest sensation, wonder produced by supernatural power, without the means—thus gratifying our instinct of free-will that would fain be emancipated from the thraldom of ordinary nature—& and would indeed annihilate both space & time” (Notebooks 3449). What interests me here are the ways in which Wordsworth works with familiar, not unfamiliar, spirits, in a bringing up of language from what Hegel in The Philosophy of Spirit calls the “night-like mine” or “unconscious pit” (Hegel §453) from which signs emerge, to “the light of things” (“The Tables Turned”), the emancipations and annihilations operating from within “metrical language” to motivate any possible incursion or excursion through “ordinary nature”, any possible space and time of writing, any signs of a presence.

    The Unanxious Infl uence of Spenser for Keats Yukie Ando Synopsis The title of my essay, “The Unanxious Infl uence of Spenser for Keats” is an allusion to Harold Bloom’s The Anxiety of Infl uence, which argues that major poets inevitably swerve away from their main predecessors. I attempt to show here that the opposite is clearly true in the case of Spenser for Keats. Spenser’s infl uence continued from the beginning of his poetic carrier till the end of his life. In section 1, “Keats’s Spenser,” I present biographical details about the role of Spenser in Keats’s poetic development, focusing on the stylistic elements, the sonorities, that reared his ears. In section 2, “Spenser’s Roman à clef,” I discuss The Shepheardes Calender, a landmark in English pastoral poetry. Spenser models it primarily on Virgil’s Eclogues, but he swerves from the mel- ancholy and nostalgia that are the mainstays of traditional pastorals and deals with topical political and religious issues of the Elizabethan Age. I discuss the work in the context of the pastoral tradition and besides point out its importance for Keats and others. In section 3, “Keats’s Endymion,” I discuss this ambitious work, a pastoral poem in heroic couplets. While he was writing it, Keats took Spenser as his guiding light. Though he swerves from Spenser in thematic focus, avoiding political and religious topicality, he yet clearly imbues his lines with Spenserian sonorities, as he pursues ideal beauty. The character Endymion is himself idealized, not an ordinary shepherd, but the prince of shepherds, riding “a fair-wrought car” in pursuit of the supernal, the goddess Diana or her cynosure Cynthia.
