The tournament will be run again in Whanganui next year and we look forward to hosting another great tournament! Remember the old saying, ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.’ Turns out, the last part isn’t true. Neuroscientific evidence suggests that ‘verbal abuse’ can cause changes to a young person’s brain that may have long-term negative consequences. And in the short-term, we'd suggest the anxiety and fear created wouldn’t be helpful either.

Shouting at kids in sport wouldn’t necessarily, or usually, meet the threshold of ‘verbal abuse’, although we expect we’ve all seen some that might. But we think the research that’s been done by people such as Dr Martin Teicher serves as a good reminder that words do matter … and potentially for a long time.

We recently reflected as a group on all the coaches we've had in sport. We could remember almost all of them, but between us there’d been two coaches who were remembered specifically because they’d said something that made us feel better about ourselves.

So, let’s all agree it’s never okay to yell in a young person’s face, ‘rip into’ a child for making a mistake or stand by and watch others do it. Shouting aggressively at someone always diminishes the relationship, but kindness never does.

Golf is the highest club participation sport in the country with around half a million kiwis playing the game. New Zealand has the second highest amount of courses per capita in the world (Scotland has the most) with about 10,000 people per course. In our region we are even higher with just under 6,000 people per course, so there are plenty of options to get out there and play some of the most beautiful courses in the country.

There is more than one way to play, with Footgolf now available at River City Golf. In this variation of the game, the hole is a half barrel, and you kick a football rather than strike a golf ball. Another version is Speed Golf for the time poor golfer/ runner, this is where you carry a limited amount of clubs and your final score is how many strokes you take, plus the amount of time it takes to complete and the lowest score wins.

On Sunday, 19 August a group of aspiring athletics coaches from the Whanganui/Manawatu region attended an Athletics NZ level one coaching course. The course was run by Kat O’Sullivan and Steph Biggs who have spent the last 18 months reviewing and redeveloping the junior “Run, Jump, Throw” course. The main changes to the programme have been in the recognition of Sport NZ’s concept of a holistic approach to coaching young people and ensuring that fun is at the centre of everything they do! This has been achieved using a game-based approach to coaching as opposed to the drill based focus of the previous editions of this course. Sport Whanganui’s Coaching Advisor Steve Kerfoot was pleased to attend the informative and successful afternoon, courtesy of Sport Whanganui and Athletics NZ.
