Composée de cinq étapes, cette Coupe du Monde ne s’arrête qu’à deux reprises Champion en Europe. Une « chez nous » à Hyères, l’autre en Angleterre. ÉDITO Nous sommes très fiers que World Sailing (Fédération Internationale de Voile) nous ait confié l’organisation de cette épreuve. Leur choix s’appuie sur de nombreux critères tels que la qualité du plan d’eau, qui à Hyères n’est plus à démontrer, la qualité de l’organisation à terre comme en mer, mais aussi la viabilité financière de l’événement. La FFVoile réunit de nombreux critères, tout particulièrement grâce au soutien fidèle de Toulon Provence Méditerranée et à l’investissement de la Ville de Hyères. Comme tous les quatre ans, l’organisation de l’événement à quelques mois des Jeux Olympiques représente un challenge encore plus intéressant. Tous les meilleurs mondiaux et tous les futurs sélectionnés au plus grand événement sportif au monde seront à Hyères. Falmouth welcomes the world Finn elite to JP Morgan Asset Management Finn Gold Cup Day -2 Major Championships 2012 The JP Morgan Asset Management Falmouth Finn Festival continues this weekend with the opening of the Finn Gold Cup, the class world championship with 94 entries from 30 countries registered. As an Olympic Qualification Regatta, the principal objective of the week is to select the remaining six nations for the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition. Of course many nations are also using the regatta as their final sailor selection event, so the stakes are about as high as they could possibly be for many sailors here. The regatta is being hosted by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, though the event is based at the Falmouth Watersports Centre with racing taking place in Falmouth Bay. A series of 10 races will constitute the opening series from Sunday 13 May to Thursday 17 May, with a medal race for the top 10 and an 11th race of the rest on Friday 18 May. The festival concludes next Saturday when the sailors will take part in the Olympic Torch relay, which passes through the town on the first day of its route around Britain. Qualification The Finn Class has a quota of 25 entries into the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition. Eighteen nations qualified last December at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and the USA, in addition to Great Britain as the host. The final six nations will be known by the end of next week.

NOVEMBER 2010 LUKE LAWRENCE WINS SILVER CUP SPECTACULAR ACTION MEDIA REPORT ED WRIGHT WINS GOLD CUP he Olympic Commission set up by ISAF delivered its preliminary report at the ISAF Conference in May 2010. Based largely on the Olympic Commission report, the ISAF Executive has since published two submissions for the 2010 ISAFT Annual Conference in Athens this November. Within these submissions an exciting new future for the selection and decision process for Olympic sailing events and equipment is outlined. The Finn is positioning itself to be part of that future in which the events and equipment will be added to ISAF regulations rather than voted on in full every four years The full text of the submissions can be downloaded from the ISAF website. Among the submissions are proposals for two sets of single-handed dinghies for both male and female sailors, to represent the weight and size distribution of modern youth of both genders in the most popular and low-cost type of dinghy sailing Here are some of the arguments why Finn sailors think the Finn should remain part of the Olympic sailing equipment. An outstanding display of sailing skills and athleticism Tough challenge The Finn is widely regarded as one of the toughest physical challenges in sailing. Sailors have to be tough, strong, fit, agile and athletic, while managing the mental aspects of racing at the highest level. The current world champion has a VOR max comparable with marathon runners and cross country skiers. Winning takes dedication, commitment and performing at the limits of fitness and endurance.

Scarlino Ready for European Championship
Scarlino ready for European Championship Major Championships 2012 The Finn class is returning to Tuscany in Italy for its 2012 Senior and Junior European Championships. A favourite area because of its great climate and stunning scenery, the venue once again is the Marina di Scarlino, a modern large marina located half way between the town of Follonica and Punta Ala. The host for the championship, sponsoreed by enegrgy company Sorgenia is the Club Nautico Scarlino, with the racing taking place just a short distance offshore in the Gulf of Follonica. The Finns had a very successful European Championship at the same club in 2008 and it is with some eagerness that the sailors are returning there to begin the 2012 European sailing season in earnest. To fit in with the rest of a very busy season, the dates are very early – in fact this is the first time the Finn Europeans have ever been held before April. However the long term forecast looks pleasant enough with temperatures in the early 20s and winds from 10-15 knots. A week before the first race, the pre-entry was at 79 sailors from 28 nations, including 15 juniors, which is an encouraging number considering that a number of the top sailors are skipping this championship, preferred to base themselves in Palma for extensive training programmes. This includes most of the strong British team who would have been the favourites here. Both Olympic champion Ben Ainslie (GBR) – who is still getting back to fitness after an extended period off for back operation – and the current World and European champion Giles Scott (GBR) will be absent in Scarlino.

Finn Class Interview - Jonathan Lobert - great expectations Olympics Jonathan Lobert will go into the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition with the expectations of a nation on his broad shoulders. After the 2008 Finn Class bronze medal was won by fellow French sailor Guillaume Florent, this year may bring more French success with Jonathan's performance in recent years suggesting that another Finn medal is a distinct possibility. In 2008 Florent beat Jonathan in the French trials before going on to win the bronze at the Olympics in China. At the time Jonathan was a relative newcomer to the Finn fleet, having moved into the class in 2007 after outgrowing the Laser. But he made steady progress and then in 2010 was suddenly the centre of attention as he led the fleet for much of that year's Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta - the event that saw the return of Ben Ainslie to the Finn fleet. Jonathan eventually ended up second to Giles Scott. He lost his way a bit at the 2010 Finn Gold Cup in San Francisco, finishing 13th, some way behind his main competition for the Olympic berth, Thomas Le Breton, who placed fifth. However at the end of the year he won the 2010 Perth International Regatta, and then the following year, Jonathan picked up the silver medal at the 2011 Olympic Test Event in Weymouth, a big step towards his eventual selection. A sixth place at the 2011 Finn Gold Cup in Perth sealed it for Jonathan and soon after he was announced as the French choice for Weymouth.

We explored this challeng- ing sport with an interdisciplinary approach, using well-known tools in Economics and Finance for a new interpretation of success in Olympic Sailing. With this work, we offer an exploration with new lenses of an eminent domain for Swiss Sailing Team. To address the topic, we firstly studied the role and the contribution of the luck. So, we computed the ratio between the variance of the winning percentages for a large sample of Olympic classes elite sailors and the variance of the hypothetic scenario where the luck is the only factor in who wins and loses the sailing races. We identified that Olympic Sailing sport is a skill-based discipline, and the medallists are affected only for 10% to 20% by luck. Secondly, we ana- lyzed in-depth the performance of the elite Swiss sailors. In total, we designed two predicting models, and we qualitatively validated both by keeping into account the luck and the risk. We are persuaded that these predictions could be used for goal setting. The first was elaborated by using the power-law func- tions; by doing so, we characterized the learning curve of each Swiss sailor and projected it into the future.
