Home Tamilnadu Map Theni District Profile Print THENI DISTRICT 10/14/2018 Home TamilNadu Map Theni District Profile Print THENI DISTRICT PROFILE • Theni district is bounded by Madurai District in the East, Kerala State in the West and South and Dindigul District in the North. • The District lies between 9º32'00’’N to 10º15'00’’N Latitude, 77º10'00’’E to 77º 40'00’’E Longitude and has an areal extent of 2869 sq.km. • There are 8 Blocks, 130 Villages and 790 Habitations in the District. Physiography and Drainage: • The district is bordered in the west by Western Ghats and Kerala State. The terrain slopes generally from west to east by the influence of Western Ghats hill ranges and some parts from South to North. • The Western Ghats is the main hill ranges present at the west and Andipatti hill ranges are bordering at South east part of the district. • The northern part of the district is covered by Kodaikanal hills. • Theni district forms parts of Vaigai River Sub catchment.The area is drained by a network of Rivers namely Vaigai River, Suruli Ar, Periyar River and Kottagudi River. • The tributaries of Vaigai River i.e. Koothantchi Ar, Kottagudi Ar, Theni Ar and some local streams are drained in this district. Rainfall: The average annual rainfall and the 5 years rainfall collected from IMD, Chennai is as follows: Acutal Rainfall in mm Normal Rainfall in mm 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 850.30 939.30 1171.90 366 816.5 719.76 Geology: Rock Type Geological Formation Charnockite, Gneiss, Granite, Hard Rock Laterite, Quartzite, Laterite, Kalkar and Alluvium Hydrogeology: Ground Water restricted to Type of Aquifer weathered mantle fracture zones having secondary porosity Well yield in lpm 45 - 135 Transmissivity (T)m2/day 15 - 60 Permeability (K)(m/day)) 0.98 - 2.45 Depth of Water level 5m to 12m Ground Water Level:: The Ground Water levels from the 21 number of observation wells of TWAD have been analysed for Post-Monsoon and Pre- Monsoon. Since 1991 average Ground water level in m Below Ground Level for pre and post monsoon is as follows: 1/4 10/14/2018 Sustainability:: With a view to enhance the Sustainability of the drinking water sources, recharge structures are being implemented by TWAD Board under various State and Central Government assistances. The demand of water is increasing day by day. So, groundwater resources play a vital role for additional demand by farmers and Industries and domestic usage leads to rapid development of groundwater. About 63% of available groundwater resources are now being used. However, the development is not uniform all over the State, and in certain districts of Tamil Nadu, intensive groundwater development had led to declining water levels, increasing trend of Over Exploited and Critical Firkas, saline water intrusion, etc. ADMINISTRATIVE SET UP The geographical extent of Theni District is 3, 24,230 hectares or 3,242.30 sq.km. Accounting for 2.05 percent of the geographical area of Tamilnadu State. The district has well laid roads and railway lines connecting all major towns within and outside the State. For administrative purpose, the district has been bifurcated into 5 Taluks, 8 Blocks and 17 Firkas .

    Theni – Gateway to Tourism Dr. M. Anusha Angel Assistant Professor of History, Jayaraj Annapackiam College for Women (Autonomous), Periyakulam. ABSTRACT Theni is one of the famous tourist centre in Tamilnadu. Theni is called by the names – ‘Gate way to Tourism’, ‘The Hidden Paradise in Earth’ Resounding cascades, silver – lined clouds resting a top billiard green hill tops, sheer rock faces and temples of antiquity are the stuff that distinguish the tourism destinations of the Theni District.1 These unique places warm the soul and provide the much – needed balm to the mind. Theni District in the southern part of Tamilnadu is one among the choicest tourist delights and destinations with a delightful mixture of tourist attractions such as captivating dams, waterfalls and countless pilgrim centers dams, waterfalls and countless pilgrim centers. INTRODUCTION Theni has many tourist attractions to offer. The Vaigai Dam, Sothupparati Dam and Shanmuganathi Dam are some lovely picnic spots. There are many idyllic waterfalls such as Surulifalls, Kumbakkarai falls and Chinna Suruli falls.2 Theni boasts of many temples and shrines and is a famous Hindu pilgrim. Devotees from all over India come to pay homage at Kuchanur, Mavoothu, Theertha Thotti, Gowmariamman Temple, Devadanapatti Kamakshi Amman Temple and Balasubramanya Temple. Other places of tourist interest in Theni are Meghamalai Hills, Bodi Mettu and the Paravasu ulagam water themepark. Theni Town in the district Head Quarters known as the “Second Manchestor of South India" Which indicates the various cotton trade. Three Hydro power station namely Periyar,Surlier and Vaigai Micro Hydro Power Station generate electricity in this district.3 45 Theni District is a district of TamilNadu State in South East India.

    The anti-Kallar movement of 1896 / 1 Securing the rural citizen: The anti-Kallar movement of 1896 Anand Pandian Visiting Assistant Professor of History and Anthropology Hamilton College This article concerns the politics of security and caste difference in the late nineteenth century Madras Presidency. Relying on a vernacular principle of interpretation emerging from the colonial archive itselfa Sanskrit Law of Coincidencethe article makes a case for collective identity in colonial India as a conjunctural attribution. I closely examine the trajectory of a widespread peasant movement that sought in 1896 to evict a single caste from hundreds of settlements altogether. The article tracks an intimate traffic between administrative sociology and native stereotype that converged on an assessment of this caste as thieving and predatory by nature. This racialised politics of intrinsic character enabled a popular programme of violent eviction. At the same time, peasant efforts to secure property and territory from threat may be understood as an alternative project of rural government, one that marked a crucial turn in the development of a moral order in the southern Tamil countryside.
