A moderate walk using footpaths and lanes. There is one busy road section of about 300 yards on the A396 and the main Exeter to Bristol railway line has to be crossed at Stafford Bridge. The underfoot conditions can be wet and sticky on some of the footpaths when there has been a lot of rain. There is one steep ascent from the A396 as we walk back to the cars through the woods.

In Exmouth the train back is every half an hour, so the choices of sandwiches, café or pub for lunch and either a train straight home or a stop at Exeter Central for the shops and winter sales are options on the day.

We’ll follow the river valley passing Black-a-Tor Copse one of the moor’s three surviving oak woods from where we will begin the climb to Yes Tor, at 619m the highest point in southern England. Some tracks may be indistinct, but much of the route will use good moorland tracks. If it’s a clear day there will be wonderful views, and if the weather is less promising......
