The castle is perhaps best known, however, for its highly fictionalised literary connection of William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth. It is still the family home of the Cawdor family who have filled the castle with beautiful furniture, fine portraits and pictures, interesting objects and outstanding tapestries. The extended parts of the castle are a fine example of 17th century Scottish vernacular style with slated roofs over walls and crow-stepped gables of mellow local stone.
