MAX NATHAN 2 Abstract This thesis examines the economic effects of cultural diversity; it focuses on recent experience in British cities, and on links between migrant and minority communities, diversity and innovation. Like many western societies Britain is becoming more culturally diverse, a largely urban process driven by net immigration and growing minority communities. Despite significant public interest we know little about the economic impacts. This PhD aims to fill these major gaps. First, I explore connections between diversity, immigration and urban outcomes. I ask: does diversity help or hinder urban economic performance? Initial cross-sectional analysis finds positive associations between ‘super-diversity’ and urban wages. -

In altre parole, sembra necessario precisare quale contributo si presuma di offrire alla comprensione del percorso poetico di Heaney, anche in rapporto alle monografie e ai saggi esistenti. È il poeta stesso a indicare la chiave di lettura che meglio consente di cogliere il senso profondo della sua ricerca estetica ed etica. Nel componimento “Out of the Bag” il narratore richiama l'attenzione su “the cure / By poetry that cannot be coerced”1. Riassumendo in questo verso le qualità fondamentali dell'arte poetica, Heaney mette in luce i tratti distintivi della sua produzione, sempre alla ricerca, fin dalle prime prestazioni, di una mediazione fra le pressioni socio-politiche del mondo esterno e la volontà di mantenere intatto il potere terapeutico del medium poetico. Lo scopo di questa ricerca è quello di affrontare la lettura, o rilettura, delle poesie di Heaney, come egli stesso suggerisce in “Squarings XXXVII”: “Talking about it isn't good enough / But quoting from it at least demonstrates / The virtue of an art that knows its mind”2. -

Born in Brooklyn, New York, he attended university at Georgetown and Cambridge, where he studied with I.A. Richards, and Columbia, where he studied law. In 1942 he was appointed curator of Harvard Library’s Poetry Room (established in 1931 and specialising in twentieth century poetry in English); curator of the Farnsworth Room in 1945; and Subject Specialist in English Literature in 1947. Stratis Haviaras writes in The Harvard Librarian that ‘Though five other curators preceded him, Jack Sweeney is considered the Father of the Poetry Room …’. 1 He oversaw the Poetry Room’s move to the Lamont Library, ‘establishing its philosophy and its role within the library system and the University; and he endowed it with an international reputation’.2 He also lectured in General Education and English at Harvard. University of Cape Town Abstract Seamus Heaney's poetic development is examined through a series of close readings of selected poems from his first four volumes. The main focus of the di3sertation is on the stages through which he passes in his attempt to develop a poetic mode which is simultaneously responsive to the preoccu pations of the private self and to the wider political and cultural backdrop of Northern Ireland. Death of a Naturalist and Door into the Dark are examined in terms of the relation between poetic technique and historical situation. Correlatives of limitation characterise nearly all aspects of Heaney's poetic technique in the first volume. These are enumerated and examined. Enclosures at a conceptual rather than technical level are found to characterise Door into the Dark. The mode used threatens to become a form of self-enclosure, hermetically sealed off from the conditions of its production. -

Heaney has raised the voice of the national identity of the catholic people and has also invoked the support of the protestant Irish community to help them recreate a prosperous Ireland of native traditions. The life of the Irish people at the farming level, rural habits and several other items happening in the day to day life of these people supply raw material for imaginary and symbolism in the poetry of Seamus Heaney. By picking up symbols from the experience of a childhood he reconstructs complete image of the Irish people living in Ulster region, a community of minority Catholics engaged in homely activities like farming, digging, churning etc., without much caring for attaining higher stations of life in political fields or in economic framework of the industrialized society. Heaney has raised the voice of the national identity of the catholic people and has also invoked the support of the protestant Irish community to help them recreate a prosperous Ireland of native traditions His symbols are homely but effective to the Irish life.
