WHO WAS THIS CANADIAN DESIGN PIONEER? ALLAN FLEMING (1929–1977) His early dream was to be an illustrator, but instead he went on to change the face of design in Canada. In 1957, Fleming was hired to work for Cooper & Beatty Ltd., eventually becoming Vice-President and Director of Creative Services. HANS KLEEFELD Born and raised in Germany, he came to Canada in 1952 and went on to design some of the country’s most recognizable identities. In the 1960s, he created logos for Air Canada, TD Bank, and the Bank of Montreal – all still in use today. Throughout his career he has found time to teach, and currently teaches design at Ontario’s Sheridan College. CARL DAIR A self-taught designer, his first job in 1930 was creating advertising and layouts for the Stratford-Beacon Herald newspaper. By 1945, he was Typographic Director at the National Film Board of Canada. He was later commissioned to develop the Cartier typeface for Canada’s Centennial, and wrote the influential book Design With Type.
