Sexual Size Dimorphism of Lacertid Lizards from Korea1 한국환경생태학회지 26(5) : 668~674. 2012 ISSN 1229-3857 Kor. J. Env. Eco. 26(5) : 668~674. 2012 Sexual Size Dimorphism of Lacertid Lizards from Korea1 Min-Ho Chang2, Hong-Shik Oh3* 1 2 3* ABSTRACT This study was conducted to find the sexual size dimorphism(SSD) in morphometric characters of three species , Eremias argus, Takydromus amurensis and T. wolteri in lacertid lizard from Korea. Six external traits, snout‐vent length, tail length, head length, head width, forelimb length and hind-limb length were focused to compare two sexes among the each three lizards. Student's t‐test was used to compare the adult SVL between the sexes for each species. For the other parts of the body, a one‐way analysis of covariance(ANCOVA) with SVL as the covariate was used. In all these species, males have longer tail and head than females like general lacertid lizard. In addition, male E. arugus have broader head and longer forelimbs and hind-limbs than conspecific females. Likewise, male T. wolteri have broader head than females. In the three lacertid lizards from Korea, snout‐vent length did not significantly differ between the sexes. To understand the causes for SSD in SVL, ecological information, such as the presence/absence of male-male combat and the correlation between the SVL of female and litter size, is required. Therefore, further ecological study on the three species of lacertid lizard from Korea will make it possible to explain the reason SSD is not found in SVL. 1 접수 2012년 6월 8일, 수정(1차: 2012년 9월 17일), 게재확정 2012년 9월 18일 Received 8 June 2012; Revised(1st: 17 September 2012); Accepted 18 September 2012 2 국립공원관리공단 국립공원연구원 National Park Research Institute, Korea National Park Service, Namwon(590-811), Korea 3 제주대학교 과학교육학과 Dept. of Science Education, Jeju Univ., Jeju(690-756), Korea * 교신저자 Corresponding author([email protected]) Sexual Size Dimorphism of Lacertid Lizards from Korea INTRODUCTION (Zhao and Adler, 1993; Arnold, 1997; Goris and Maeda, 2004). This has caused considerable challenges in accurate species identification, meaning that a number of cryptic species have been er- roneously identified as known species, resulting in substantially underestimated species diversity. We have integrated ev- idence from morphology and DNA sequence data to describe a new species of the Asian Grass Lizard, Takydromus albomaculosus sp. nov., based on two specimens from Tianjingshan Forestry Station, Ruyuan County, Guangdong Prov- ince, China. The new species can be distinguished from other known Takydromus species by distinctive morphological differences and significant genetic divergence in the mitochondrial COI gene.

We test ReadingRG6 6AS, UK whether productivity is influenced by proxies of adult mortality rates such as insularity and fossorial habits, by measures of temperature such as environmental and body temperatures, mode of reproduction and activity times, and by environ- mental productivity and diet. We further examine whether low productivity is linked to high extinction risk. Location World-wide. Methods We assembled a database containing 551 lizard species, their phyloge- netic relationships and multiple life history and ecological variables from the lit- erature. We use phylogenetically informed statistical models to estimate the factors related to lizard productivity. Results Some, but not all, predictions of metabolic and life-history theories are supported. When analysed separately, clutch size, relative clutch mass and brood frequency are poorly correlated with body mass, but their product – productivity – is well correlated with mass. The allometry of productivity scales similarly to metabolic rate, suggesting that a constant fraction of assimilated energy is allocated to production irrespective of body size.

Bd. 42 H. 1 S. 67—73 Bonn, März 1991 Karyologische Untersuchungen an der Omaneidechse Lacerta jayakari Boulenger, 1887 Barbara Fritz, Wolfgang Bischoff & Johannes-Peter Fritz Abstract. The diploid chromosome complement of Lacerta jayakari consists of 38 chromosomes with 36 acrocentric macrochromosomes and 2 microchromosomes. The presence of female heterogamety (ZZ/ZW system), where W is a microchromosome, is reported. One of the small pairs (probably the 15th) are the NOR bearing macrochromoso- mes. The DNA content/cell is 3.03 pg in the female and 2.88 pg in the male. L. jayakari is not closely related to the genus Gallotia but to the modern majority of the Lacertidae. Key words. Sauria, Lacertidae, Lacerta jayakari, karyotype, NOR.

  • Heat Tolerance of Reptile Embryos in a Changing World: Physiological Mechanisms and Ecological Effects
Heat tolerance of reptile embryos in a changing world: Physiological mechanisms and ecological effects by Joshua Matthew Hall A dissertation submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Auburn, Alabama August 8, 2020 Keywords: Anolis, climate change, critical thermal maximum, developmental plasticity, heat stress, lethal temperature, oxygen-limited thermal tolerance, urbanization Approved by Daniel Warner, Chair, Assistant Professor, Department of Biological Sciences Craig Guyer, Professor Emeritus, Department of Biological Sciences Haruka Wada, Assistant Professor, Department of Biological Sciences Jim Stoeckel, Associate Professor, School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences Tracy Langkilde, Professor, Department of Biology, Pennsylvania State University ABSTRACT Aspects of global change (e.g. climate change, urbanization) create stressful thermal environments that threaten biodiversity. Oviparous, non-avian reptiles have received considerable attention because eggs are left to incubate under prevailing conditions, leaving developing embryos vulnerable to increases in temperature. Though many studies assess embryo responses to long-term (i.e. chronic) incubation temperatures, few assess responses to acute exposures which are more relevant for many species and may become more common due to global change. Because warming temperatures cause increases in both mean and variance of nest temperatures, it is crucial to consider embryo responses to both chronic and acute heat stress. Currently, there are no standard metrics or terminology for determining heat stress of embryos. This impedes comparisons across studies and species and hinders our ability to predict how species will respond to warming temperatures. In Chapter 1, I compare various methods that have been used to assess embryonic heat tolerance in reptiles and provide new terminology and metrics for quantifying embryo responses to both chronic and acute heat stress.

According infer responses to climate warming in animal species. to this preliminary pattern, we speculate the species at Within a widespread genus or species, assessing medium and low latitudes would be more vulnerable the latitudinal or altitudinal gradient of thermal to extreme heat events caused by ongoing climate physiological traits is essential to reveal thermal warming. We highlight the importance of integrating adaptations and determine future vulnerability to thermal biology traits along geographical clues, and its climate warming geographically. We determined the potential contribution to evaluate the vulnerabilities of thermal biology traits of a cold-climate distributed species in the context of climate warming. lizard, Takydromus amurensis, and integrated published thermal biology traits within the genus Keywords counter gradient, CTmax, CTmin, thermal biological Takydromus to reveal a preliminary geographical trait, thermal tolerance range, Tsel, Takydromus pattern in thermal adaptation.
