The exhibition features 14 large-scale paintings from the contemporary American painter Kehinde Wiley's newest series, The World Stage: Israel. The vibrant portraits of Israeli youths from diverse ethnic and religious affiliations are each embedded in a unique background influenced by Jewish ceremonial art. Also included are 11 works - papercuts and large textiles – chosen by the artist from The Jewish Museum's collection. All of the 14 paintings on view are being displayed in New York for the first time. A new acquisition by Wiley (born 1977, Los Angeles) served as impetus for the exhibition. The painting, Alios Itzhak (2011), is a nine-foot tall portrait of a young Jewish Ethiopian-Israeli man surrounded by an intricate decorative background inspired by a traditional Jewish papercut in the Museum's collection. Wiley says his appropriated decorative backgrounds serve as catalysts for his paintings. The paintings represent a unique fusion of contemporary culture with European traditions and those of North Africa and the Middle East. Roughly two-thirds of the portraits in the Israel series are of Ethiopian Jews, others are of native-born Jews and Arab Israelis. The artist is driven by an ongoing exploration of globalization, diasporas, cultural hybridity, and power. Saying he knows what it feels like to exist on the periphery, Wiley likes to catapult often powerless, anonymous young men of color onto enormous canvases and into the visual language of the powerful. The large size of the paintings reflects Wiley's observation that scale has been used as a measure of historical importance throughout art history. The artist-designed and hand carved wooden frames created for The World Stage: Israel paintings combine imagery of the hands of Kohen (the blessing hands of a Kohen - a descendant of the high priest, Aaron) and the Lion of Judah (symbolizing power and majesty and often represented in symmetrical, confronting pairs of lions) each supporting a text in Hebrew. For Wiley's Jewish subjects the text shown is the Ten Commandments; for his Arab Israeli subjects, the plea of Rodney King, victim of a 1991 police beating in Los Angeles that sparked race riots, "Can we all get along?” One of the most significant young artists working today, Kehinde Wiley is originally from Los Angeles and currently lives and works in Beijing, Dakar and New York. A gifted painter, he takes everyday people and paints them often larger than life-size in the grand poses of nobles, saints and colonial rulers from classical European portraiture. While the body language is borrowed from the past, the clothes are current and often hip-hop in style. The idea is to endow status on his young, urban subjects from carefully chosen spots around the globe. Rich tapestries of color and pattern form the bright and ornate backgrounds from which the young men posture. Patterns are found in the decorative traditions of each culture Wiley has chosen for his World Stage series. The fifth in the series, Israel, has recently been completed with 14 of the 18 paintings in the set on view in The Jewish Museum’s exhibition. Prior sites for Wiley’s ambitious series have been China, Africa, Brazil and India/Sri Lanka. To find his subjects – almost always young, black and male – he goes to places the hip and young hang out. For The World Stage: Israel, Wiley scouted in discos, malls, bars and sporting venues in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in 2010. He formally poses the young men and photographs them. The result forms the basis for his paintings. A nine-minute video in the exhibition shows Wiley in marketplaces, homes and public arenas of Israel’s two largest cities finding the faces and figures that will become his subjects. Exhibition highlights include Wiley’s Kalkidan Mashasha (2011) a portrait of the Ethiopian-Israeli hip-hop artist, and Leviathan Zodiac (2011) which pictures the subject in a regal pose reminiscent of ancient Roman heroic sculpture. Examples of the ceremonial papercuts and large textiles from the Museum’s collection are: a richly embroidered Italian Torah ark curtain from Venice of purple silk (1680/81) and a Mizrah (inscribed 1877), of paint, ink, and pencil on cut-out paper which would have been placed on the wall of a home or synagogue to indicate the direction of worship, toward Jerusalem. This intricate mizrah inspired the background of Kehinde Wiley’s painting, Alios Itzhak. Kehinde Wiley received a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 1999, and a MFA from Yale University in 2001. His paintings are in the collections of over forty museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Hammer Museum; High Museum; Walker Art Center; Brooklyn Museum; and The Jewish Museum, New York, to name a few. Selected exhibitions include The National Portrait Gallery, Brooklyn Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and Columbus Museum of Art, among others. Sean Kelly Gallery will present its forthcoming exhibition, Kehinde Wiley: Economy of Grace, from May 5 to June 16, 2012. The exhibition will be the artist's first at the gallery since joining Sean Kelly and represents a significant departure from his previous work. Wiley’s work has been the subject of eight monographs to date, with a forthcoming Rizzoli publication scheduled for release in March. Kehinde Wiley/The World Stage: Israel has been organized by Karen Levitov, Associate Curator at The Jewish Museum. A 64-page catalogue is being published by Roberts & Tilton, Culver City, California. The hardcover book contains 40 color images and essays by Claudia J. Nahson, Ruth Eglash, and Shalva Weil, Ph.D. It fully illustrates Wiley’s new portraits from The World Stage: Israel. The catalogue will be available at The Jewish Museum’s Cooper Shop for $40.00. On Thursday, March 15 at 6:30 pm, The Jewish Museum will present Kehinde Wiley in conversation about The World Stage: Israel series with Lola Ogunnaike, a leading pop culture authority and a Today Show contributor. As part of its new series of after-hours events called The Wind Up, The Jewish Museum will present a music performance by Ethiopian-Israeli hip-hop artist Kalkidan Mashasha, and composer, multimedia artist and writer Paul Miller, aka DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, on Thursday, March 8 at 8:00 pm. The exhibition features a previously unseen series of ten monumental works, in the form of stained glass windows and paintings, showcased at the heart of the museum’s permanent collections.     Grade One Session One – Exploration of Different Genres in Art First Grade Overview: The first grade program will explore various genres in art history. Building upon the concept of portraiture examined in kindergarten, we will begin the first session by comparing traditional and contemporary examples of portraiture as an artistic genre. In subsequent sessions, we will examine the genres of landscape and still life through paintings and prints that embrace cultural, international and gender differences. In the fourth and final session, the subject will return to the idea of portraiture looking ahead to the thematic concepts of rituals and traditions examined in the second grade program. To begin the session, you may briefly recall some of the works of art studied during the previous year and/or the concepts of portraiture. Wiley is one of the leading contemporary American artists, reworking the grand portraiture traditions of Western culture. Wiley began his first series of portraits in the early 2000s during a residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem. He set out to recast young African American men from the neighborhood in the style and manner of traditional history painting. Since then he has also painted pop culture stars, although his primary focus remains ordinary people in their own clothes and style. Trained at Yale in the 1990s, Wiley brings a strong understanding of traditional painting techniques to an interest in contemporary issues of identity and power. Wiley’s portraits recreate the poses of European aristocrats, contrasting elaborate and ornate backgrounds with contemporary subjects in their own clothes. These choices draw attention to the lack of images of people of color in historical and contemporary works. Portrait by Mark Leong Painter Kehinde Wiley, 35, has enjoyed the kind of meteoric career that led Andy Warhol to quip about 15 minutes of fame. When he was a child, his mother, a linguist, enrolled Wiley and his siblings in art and literary programs as a way to help keep them safe in the rough South Central Los Angeles neighborhood where they lived. Early on Wiley gravitated toward the visual arts; when he was 12, he went to the U.S.S.R. on an arts exchange program, thanks to a foundation grant funded by financier Michael Milken, which ignited his interest in global politics. After Yale's MFA program, Wiley got a coveted residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem, where he started establishing himself as an art-world luminary. Drawn in by the "peacocking" of Harlem street life, he began making luxurious, Old Master–influenced portraits of young black men in street clothes. Subsequently, in his "The World Stage" series, he broadened his focus to include large-scale portraits of young men from regions around the globe. His work references Titian as easily as it does pop culture, and addresses stereotypes of race and class, power and history.

Evan Agostini / Invision / AP / Katie Martin / The Atlantic By age 12, Kehinde Wiley had a reputation in his Los Angeles neighborhood for being a talented artist. Teachers at his school recommended him for a program during which he spent the summer of 1989 in Russia with 50 Soviet kids and 50 other Americans, creating murals, learning the Russian language and culture, hiking, swimming, and picking mushrooms. “It was a strange, magical time,” he recalls. Wiley went on to study art at the San Francisco Art Institute and Yale. He now has a studio in Brooklyn, and Barack Obama chose him to paint a lively portrait of the former president that now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. I recently spoke with Wiley about traveling to Nigeria to meet his father for the first time after having painted portraits of him for years, dealing with criticism, and the importance of slowing down. This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for length and clarity. Lola Fadulu: What was your mom’s work schedule like? Kehinde Wiley: My mother, while raising six kids, had a number of small- business activities. The most prominent one in my memory was sort of like a junk store. She would be away, in the earliest years, much of the day. Then she would be around more in the late afternoons, evenings. When we weren’t in school, we would be around the shop, and I remember learning Spanish dealing with a lot of the customers there.

It’s all about history and identity, he tells Ben Luke Kingston parade: Alexander I, Emperor of Russia, after Gerard’s 1817 painting Kehinde Wiley is already a big art world star. He’s the South Central LA kid who became the darling of the hip-hop scene, with A-list celebrities queuing up to be painted by him; he’s a fixture in American museums, with paintings that reach six figures at auction; and he has studios around the world, in New York, Beijing and Dakar. Once seen, these paintings aren’t forgotten: images of young black people, mainly men, in poses from grand historical portraits, with dazzling flower-patterned backgrounds. In the new show, all the paintings are based on great British portraits by Joseph Wright of Derby and other masters, and the backdrops are like William Morris on acid. “I’ve turned the volume up on notions of acceptable colour and taste,” the 36-year-old artist tells me from Beijing.

The Virgin Mary, Mother of God in the Christian faith, is shown in Andrea di Bartolo’s painting as large and majestic, ascending into heaven surrounded by a group of angels. The opposite work shows a bare-chested, tattooed gentleman holding an art history book, the cover of which features none other than Mary holding her child, Jesus Christ. Wiley’s subject gives the sign of a benediction or blessing with his other hand.
