Si la recherche scientifique est si fondamentale pour l’avenir de nos sociétés, ce n’est pas tant pour les solutions apportées à des problèmes déterminés que pour la perspective d’ensemble qu’elle est susceptible d’offrir sur le monde ; sur ce qui le fait bouger et sur ce qui le fait tenir. Cette mise en perspective nécessite de croiser les savoirs et les points de vue les plus divers, en tenant compte de l’histoire et de l’expérience de chacun. Elle implique également d’oser s’aventurer sur de nouveaux chemins de traverse. C’est la raison pour laquelle ­l’Institut d’études avancées de Nantes invite chaque année une petite trentaine de savants et d’artistes venant de toutes les disciplines et de toutes les régions du monde. Il leur offre la liberté de mener les recherches de leur choix sans autres contraintes que celles de partager leur questionnement avec leur entourage et de faire preuve de curiosité pour celui des autres. Lors de la composition du groupe, une attention fine est portée à leur parcours et à leurs projets de façon à susciter entre eux les échanges les plus féconds. L’institut veille également à l’équilibre entre savants du Nord et du Sud, de manière à renouveler profondément la nature de nos échanges intellectuels et éviter les impasses auxquelles se condamnent ceux qui manquent de recul sur leurs propres armatures dogmatiques.

Le temps passé ensemble au cours de l’année est l’occasion de tisser des liens durables susceptibles de renou- veler les réseaux scientifiques et les approches qui s’y développent. L’institut est en cela un lieu d’ouverture, d’abord pour chacun des intellectuels qui sont invités à y résider, mais également pour les acteurs du territoire et pour la communauté scientifique française qui s’enrichiront de leur point de vue. C’est à la facilitation de ces rencontres qu’est destinée la publication de cet annuaire.

The fundamental contribution of scientific research to our societies stems less from the solutions it may bring to a series of well-defined problems as from the way it enables us to view the world from an all-en- compassing perspective, shedding light on both the currents which influence and the principles which un- derpin it. To attain this perspective the history and personal experience of each individual and society must be taken on board. It may also be necessary to venture sometimes far from the beaten track. To this end, each year, the Nantes Institute for Advanced Study hosts around thirty scholars and artists, privileging diversity of discipline and geographical origin. The Institute allows them total freedom to carry out their research, the only constraint being to share their questions with fellow researchers and reciprocate their interest. To encourage fruitful exchanges within the group, careers and projects are carefully considered beforehand. Particular care is taken to strike a balance between the ‘north’ and ‘south’, breathing new life into our intellectual exchanges and avoiding the impasse to which a rigid adherence by each to their own dogmatic system can all too often lead.

The year spent together gives Fellows the opportunity to establish long-lasting ties, as well as to open up new scientific networks and approaches. For this reason, the Institute is a place of openness, firstly for our resident scholars, but also for a range of local interested parties and the French scientific community, who both stand to benefit from this enriching exchange. This directory has been published with a view to facilitating these encounters.
