Most of the tales are untethered, free to go in unpredictable directions. I love Simon and Kirby, and this book was a lot of fun. David Lapham. Definitely worth reading! There are also some things that date the comics a bit, but that is to be expected, and is all part of the fun for me. Oddly, this book skips from to , a considerable leap in time which is mirrored by a gigantic leap in quality. I really enjoyed everything about this book and recommend it highly! Error rating book. Including an introduction by Dave Gibbons, the award-winning co-creator and illustrator of Watchmen , this is an historic volume no comic book aficionado will be able to live without. He stated that it felt like the filmmakers had already set up a post-superhero era, where the language was being deconstructed and it was a requirement that everything today be grounded in reality.     From Stories to Worlds: The Continuity of Marvel Superheroes from Comics to Film David Sweeney, June 2013 Before its 2011 re-launch as the ‘New 52’ DC Comics’ advertising campaigns regularly promoted their inter-linked superhero line as ‘The Original Universe’. As DC did indeed publish the first ‘superteam’, the JSA (in All-Star Comics 3, Winter 1940), this is technically correct; however, the concept of a shared fictional world with an on-going fictive history, what comic book fans and professionals alike refer to as ‘continuity’, was in fact pioneered by DC’s main competitor, Marvel Comics, particularly in the 1960s. In this essay I will discuss, drawing on theories and concepts from the narratologists David A. Brewer and Lubomir Dolezel and with particular focus on the comic book writer Roy Thomas, how Marvel Comics developed this narrative strategy and how it has recently been transplanted to cinema through the range of superhero films produced by Marvel Studios. Superhero Origins Like DC, Marvel emerged from an earlier publishing company, Timely Publications, which had produced its own range of superheroes during the so-called ‘Golden Age of superhero comics, ushered in by the debut of Superman in Action Comics 1 in June, 1938) and lasting until the end of World War II, including Namor the Submariner, Captain America, and The Human Torch. Superhero comics declined sharply in popularity after the War and none of these characters survived the wave of cancellations that hit the genre; however, they were not out of print for long. SPACE TOMAR-RE (V.O) Billions of years ago, when the Martians refused to serve as the Guardians’ intergalactic police force, the elders of Oa created a sentinel army based on the Martian race… they named them Manhunters. INSERT: MANHUNTERS TOMAR-RE (V.O) At first the Manhunters served diligently, maintaining law and order across the universe, until one day they began to resent their masters. A war broke out between the two forces with the Guardians winning and banishing the Manhunters across the universe, stripping them of whatever power they had left. Some of the Manhunters found their way to earth upon which entering our atmosphere they lost any and all remaining power. As centuries went by man began to unearth some of these sentinels, using their advance technology to build empires on land… and even in the sea. INSERT: ATLANTIS EXT.     Magi Hossameldin Professor Thelma Bauer Digital Media Foundations- D304 8:00 - 11:20AM Class December, 18th 2018 Jack Kirby-The Real Unknown Hero ​ Often praised as the “King of Comics”, Jack Kirby has influenced generations of comic book artists and writers alike. Not only a talented comic book artist, he was also a great storyteller, which is considered to be responsible for his success and longevity. Kirby’s influence can still be seen in any modern superhero comics, and even on the big screen. Kirby is responsible for creating many iconic and beloved comic book characters. Jack Kirby was born as Jacob Kurtzberg on August 28, 1917, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. From and early childhood, Kirby aspired to be a storyteller, having being influenced by the stories his mother told him, and the stories in the newspaper comics and in the movie theaters. As a self-taught artist, he started drawing cartoons for the newspaper of the Boys Brotherhood Republic. By the age of 14, he was enrolled in Pratt Institute, but dropped out the afternoon of his first day due to financial pressures. He worked at various studios before starting his career as a super-hero comic book artist. Kirby didn’t begin his career in comics but in the animated cartoons, namely Popeye cartoons at the Max Fleischer studios. He began working at Lincoln Newspaper Syndicate as a political, gag, and strip cartoonist. Through work, he met Joe Simon, and formed a team. In 1940, they were hired by Timely Comics Company, which is known in the present as Marvel Comics.
