His fine balancing act between drama and humour convinced me that we were coming from the same place artistically. I can still see him putting his arms behind his head and his feet up on the desk as he observed the sea view from the oce we were meeting in for the first time. Funny, down-to-earth, refreshingly spontaneous, it was just Taika being Taika. That day, he explained to me how he saw the film and what parts of the book he would focus on. My main concern was that I’d seen film adaptations so faithful to the book that they somehow ended up unfaithful in essence, despite the well-meaning intentions. The challenge is that a book doesn’t go directly from the book to the screen; it goes page to page. Taika’s script had much to take from the book, yet it also had to escape it in order to come fully to life in its own medium. A reader spends a comparatively long time in there on his or her own, days or even weeks, in the dense chrysalis of prose, experiencing the emotions of the story while oblivious to the world.

Moreover, the filming of the show takes place in Europe with a largely European production team. [...] Finally, author George R.R. Martin has previously described the Wars ofthe Roses1, taking place between 1455-1485, as the loose2 inspiration behind the books. The wars were for control of the throne of England, which parallels parts of the War of the Five Kings, a key focus in the series. The medieval setting is also reminiscent of European history, and George RR Martin has said before that being an English- speaking writer meant it was easier for him to use British medieval history as a source, instead of German or Spanish history. In conclusion, it’s an American production, shot in – and inspired by – European events.

Clumps of daises, the muted softer colours of Wolverhampton. At certain angles, with your eyes squinting and the sunlight flaring, this could almost pass as beautiful. Across the wasteland we see the LIBRARY, and ZOOM IN through the window, to find JOHANNA - sixteen, fat, in NHS glasses and an army-coat. She is sitting at a table, writing. There is a huge folder, entitled: “Johanna Morrigan: A Life.” There is an old man, slumped asleep, at the other end of the table. Johanna is writing, on a page entitled “My Imaginary Boyfriends.” JOHANNA (whispering) “Mr Rochester. At the age of 13, Jane Eyre taught me a vital lesson about love. If you are poor and ugly, falling for someone handsome and rich who is already married can be tough - but, if you wait long enough, both his castle and his mad wife will burn down, and he’ll go blind - and then you can marry him. You just have to play the long game.” She laughs out loud at her own joke. The LIBRARIAN shushes her. Johanna looks out of the window. Sighs. We see - usual scruffy Wolvo people walking past, in anoraks. She slumps in her chair, pulling her great coat over her. It’s so DEAD here. Then, from the melee of ordinary people, a hot teenage indie boy appears: a classic of his time.
