Mr. Don Oberdorfer: None of these are simple answers. I wouldn’t put myself into the head of the North Korean leadership to try to say what they are thinking. But the fact is that it has been a year since the talks last convened. They had promised to return and they have not done that, they have come under increasing pressure from other nations including the United States, China, South Korea to return to the talks, and they have forged something of a change in their relationship with South Korea which may be helpful. In the past, North Korea has refused to talk to South Korea at all about its nuclear issues saying that that’s not their business and that they only wanted to talk to the United States about this.

Location: Princeton, NJ Client: Princeton University Area: 29,900 gsf (Wu); 11,000 gsf (Blair); 18,000 gsf (Little); 42,600 gsf (commons and conversion) Construction Cost: $3,143,000 (Wu); $1,724,000 (Blair); $1,300,000 (Little); $8,476,000 (commons, Forbes, landscaping, entrance, and other conversion elements) Completion: 1985 In 1980, VSBA was retained by Princeton University to conduct the school’s transformation from a dormitory to residential college system. This historic and fundamental alteration in the University’s structure (initially proposed but never implemented by Woodrow Wilson) was the result of a lengthy University-wide reappraisal of the institution’s mission and goals. The system-wide architectural changes resulting from this reappraisal encompassed new building, rehabilitation, adaptation, re-landscaping, and ornamentation involving ten buildings and complexes. VSBA’s task was to sensitively accomplish such sweeping changes endemic to Princeton’s evolving educational policy amid the school’s famous English Collegiate Gothic context, whose beauty and traditions were tied to the hearts and minds of alumni around the world. GORDON WU HALL, BUTLER COLLEGE Gordon Wu Hall provides a new focus for Butler College, one of Princeton’s three new undergraduate colleges, and houses its dining hall, lounge, library, study areas, and administrative offices. Our design problem was to create a building providing an identity for the new college and serving as a social focal point that would also connect with neighboring facilities in two stylistically disparate buildings. Furthermore, the building’s site was irregular, sloping, and narrow, and the facility was to share an existing kitchen with adjacent Wilson College.

This is an interview with John Gunther Dean. This is being done on behalf of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training. I'm Charles Stuart Kennedy. Let's start at the beginning. Could you tell me when and where you were born and something about your family. DEAN: Okay. I was born on February 24, 1926 in the German city of Breslau, an industrial city of 650,000 people, where they made locomotives, airplanes. Silesia is one of the two lungs of Germany: the Ruhr Valley and Silesia. My father was a corporation lawyer who was on the Board of Directors of banks, chairman of a machine-tool company, mining corporations, etc... He was close to many of the leading industrial and financial people in Germany, in the period between the First World War and the Second World War. My father was also the President of the Jewish Community in Breslau. His friend Max Warburg played the same role in Hamburg. Q. Was this the banking Warburg. DEAN: That's right. Max Warburg was the head of the banking house at that time. Sigmund was his nephew who went to England. Q. "Dean" was ... DEAN: My father changed our name legally by going to court in New York Dean - 1 in March 1939. My father's name was Dr. Josef Dienstfertig. You will find his name in books listing the prominent men in industry and finance at the time.
