Foster MARGINAL NOTES Resources Deputy Minister Ontario Mapping of the Kemptville area involved the re-examination of part of an area mapped by A.E. Wilson (1940) for the Geological Survey of Canada, and later included in her larger work on the geology of the -St. Law ONTARIO GEOLOGICAL SURVEY rence Lowland (Wilson 1946). Paleozoic bedrock outcrop is abundant in the southwestern part of the map-area, and moderately abundant in the north MAP P.2493 western part. Because of a thick cover of unconsolidated sediments, out GEOLOGICAL crop is sparse in the central and eastern parts of the map-area. Most expo SERIES - PRELIMINARY MAP sures in the present map-area contain only thin stratigraphic sections, PALEOZOIC GEOLOGY The main physiographic feature in the area is the , which flows northward through the central and eastern parts of the area. The western OF THE part of the area forms part of the Smith Falls Limestone Plain, a physio graphic region wherein shallow soils of clay and loam are underlain by the dolostones and sandstones of the Beekmantown Group (Chapman and Putnam 1973). In the southeastern part of the map-area, the shallow soil is KEMPTVILLE overlain by sand deposits, forming the Edwardsburg Sand Plain. The north eastern part of the map-area forms part of the Drumlin Field. AREA PALEOZOIC STRATIGRAPHY SOUTHERN ONTARIO Beekmantown Group Scale 1:50000 The Beekmantown Group consists of, in ascending order, the Potsdam For Mile l l Mile mation, the March Formation, and the Oxford Formation, ol which only the - latter two outcrop in the present map-area. March Formation (Lower Ordovician) NTS Reference: 31 G/4 ODM-GSC Aeromagnetic Map: 9G The March Formation, the oldest Paleozoic rock unit exposed in the present map-area, outcrops in the extreme southwest corner, forming low, pave ment-like exposures. May, 1982 TI , Oxford Formation (Lower Ordovician) The Oxford Formation outcrops predominantly in the southwestern part of the map-area, however isolated outcrops do occur in the eastern part, They are generally pavement-like, and thick sections are rare. The formation generally consists of light to dark grey, light to medium brown, and blue grey, finely to coarsely crystalline dolostone that weathers light to dark grey, pale to medium brown, and buff, and occurs in beds 5 to 40 cm thick. Vugs filled with pink, coarsely crystalline calcite are common throughout the formation, and white and black chert is present locally. Wil son (1946) reported a total thickness of 240 feet (73 m) in the Ottawa area for the Oxford Formation. Common fossils include gastropods. The upper contact of the Oxford Formation with the Rockclitfe Formation is \ disconformable and is marked by the change from grey and brown dolo stone to green and white calcareous sandstone. Chazy Group The Chazy Group consists of, in ascending order, the Rockcliffe Formation and the St. Martin Formation, of which only the Rockcliffe Formation out crops in the present map-area. The St Martin Formation does not occur in the western part of the Ottawa-St. Lawrence Lowland so that the Rockcliffe Formation is disconformably overlain by the Ottawa Formation in this map- LEGEND area. PALEOZOIC Rockcliffe Formation {Middle Ordovician) MIDDLE ORDOVICIAN Only two outcrops of the Rockcliffe Formation are present in the Kemptville map-area. They occur in the extreme centraf-westem part of the area, but 5 Ottawa Formation: crystalline and the formation is presumed to extend as a thin band outlining the northwest bioclastic limestone quadrant of the map-area. UNCONFORMITY The unit consists of pale to medium green and white calcareous sandstone that weathers green and occurs in beds 2 to 5 cm thick separated by shaly CHAZY GROUP partings Locally, subrounded sand grains occur in a silty matrix. Ottawa Formation (Middle Ordovician) 2 March Formation: interbedded sand stone, dolostone, The Ottawa Formation outcrops in the northwestern part of the map-area, sandy dolostone forming Inw, pavement-like exposures Thick stratigraphic sections occur and dolomitic sandstone only in quarries. The formation generally consists of medium to dark grey and light brown, li thographic to medium crystalline limestone that weathers predominantly light grey but also pale brown and pale brown-grey, and occurs in beds 5 to SYMBOLS 30 cm thick. The unit is commonly burrowed. Thin-bedded bioclastic lime stone occurs in the extreme northern part of the outcrop area. Common fos Bed rock outcrop sils include cephalopods, gastropods, brachiopods, and the coral Teiradium cetlutosum. Quarry The Ottawa Formation is correlative in part with carbonate units west of the • l -4^' Frontenac Arch that form the Black River-Trenton Group (Wilson 1946). /x/ Geological boundary, observed STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY Geological boundary, position approximate Although the northern part of the Ottawa-St. Lawrence Lowland is intensely faulted, the southern part of the basin is devoid of faults.
