Unpublished maps and report for a SKEP project supported by CEPF grant no 1064410304. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Stakeholders in the southern karoo region of the SKEP project identified the need for a more detailed vegetation map of the Little Karoo region. CEPF funded the project team to map the vegetation of the Little Karoo region (ca. 20 000 km ²) at a scale of 1:50 000. The main outputs required were to classify, map and describe the vegetation in such a way that end-users could use the digital maps at four different tiers. Results of this study were also to be presented to stakeholders in the region to solicit their opinion about the dissemination of the products of this project and to suggest how this project should be developed further. In this document we explain how a six-tier vegetation classification system was developed, tested and improved in the field and the vegetation was mapped. Some A3-sized examples of the vegetation maps are provided, with the full datasets available in digital (ARCVIEW) format. A total of 56 habitat types, that comprises 369 vegetation units, were identified and mapped in the Little Karoo region.

Číslo 316. Ročník 32. Leden 2003 Opuntia fragilis (Nutt.) Haw. OSTNÍK – 2003 ………………................ 1 ……………………………………………. Z literatury Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten č. 9 / 2000 Echinocereus pectinatus je i bez květů parádní rostlinou každé sbírky. A co teprve, když najednou vykvete třinácti nádhernými květy (titulní snímek).

  • Phylogenetic Relationships in the Southern African Genus Drosanthemum (Ruschioideae, Aizoaceae)
Phylogenetic relationships in the southern African genus Drosanthemum (Ruschioideae, Aizoaceae) Sigrid Liede-Schumann1, Guido W. Grimm2, Nicolai M. Nürk1, Alastair J. Potts3, Ulrich Meve1 and Heidrun E.K. Hartmann4,† 1 Department of Plant Systematics, University of Bayreuth, Bayreuth, Germany 2 Unaffiliated, Orléans, France 3 African Centre for Coastal Palaeoscience, Nelson Mandela University, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa 4 Department of Systematics and Evolution of Plants, University of Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany † Deceased. ABSTRACT Background. Drosanthemum, the only genus of the tribe Drosanthemeae, is widespread over the Greater Cape Floristic Region in southern Africa. With 114 recognized species, Drosanthemum, together with the highly succulent and species-rich tribe Ruschieae, constitute the `core ruschioids' in Aizoaceae. Within Drosanthemum, nine subgenera have been described based on flower and fruit morphology. Their phylogenetic relationships, however, have not yet been investigated, hampering understanding of monophyletic entities and patterns of geographic distribution. Methods. Using chloroplast and nuclear DNA sequence data, we performed network- and tree-based phylogenetic analyses of 73 species of Drosanthemum with multiple accessions for widespread species. A well-curated, geo-referenced occurrence dataset comprising the 134 genetically analysed and 863 further accessions was used to describe the distributional ranges of intrageneric lineages and the genus as a whole. Results. Phylogenetic inference supports nine clades within Drosanthemum, seven of which group in two major clades, while the remaining two show ambiguous affinities. The nine clades are generally congruent to previously described subgenera within Submitted 8 November 2019 Accepted 26 March 2020 Drosanthemum, with exceptions such as cryptic species. In-depth analyses of sequence Published 8 May 2020 patterns in each gene region were used to reveal phylogenetic affinities inside the Corresponding author retrieved clades in more detail.

Characterization of reproductive and cytological features of midday flowers (Aizoaceae) for breeding purposes Von der Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover zur Erlangung des Grades Doktor der Gartenbauwissenschaften (Dr. rer. hort.) genehmigte Dissertation von M. Sc. Philipp Braun geboren am 28.01.1985 in Düsseldorf 2016 Referentin: Prof. Dr. rer. hort. Traud Winkelmann Korreferent: Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Thomas Debener Tag der Promotion: 06.07.2016 Abstract Abstract The succulent plant family Aizoaceae (midday flowers), whose members are mainly distributed in southern Africa, offers an enormous diversity of growth forms and flower pigmentations. Moreover, most species are drought tolerant. Despite their high ornamental value, breeding of midday flowers is still in its infancy and only few protected cultivars have been launched onto the market so far. Most likely, this fact can be ascribed to the presence of cross-incompatibilities and to a lack of knowledge on cytological properties and taxonomic relationships, which could facilitate the overcoming of hybridization barriers. These include genome sizes, chromosome numbers and knowledge on physiological mechanisms behind the cross-incompatibilities. Moreover, only little is known about flower-inducing factors and their control during midday flower cultivation. The performed analyses aimed at clarifying these relevant parameters. Genotypes of the genera Cephalophyllum, Lampranthus and Delosperma were analyzed with respect to flower formation. Obligate photoperiodic responses were detected in none of the genotypes. The investigated Lampranthus genotypes formed significantly more flowers at mean daily temperatures of 14 °C than at 20 °C. Conversely, Delosperma tended to form more flowers at 20 °C. Flowering in the investigated Cephalophyllum genotype was not influenced by the chosen temperature regimes.
