You won't believe the water's brilliant turquoise color, caused by suspended limestone particles. Half of the lake lies in Utah and half in , and all 172 square miles of it are perfect for boating, swimming, sunning and fishing. Watercraft can be rented in town, at the Bear Lake Marina and on a few of the beaches.

Bring your fishing pole! Four species of fish that live in Bear Lake can be found nowhere else in the world. In January, try ice fishing for the tasty Bonneville cisco. In the early spring and late fall, it's the trophy cutthroat trout that you'll be after. Be on the lookout for the Bear Lake Monster—a serpent-like creature 90 feet long that spouts water. Even if you aren't a fisherman, you can still savor the outdoors. On the southern shore, Rendezvous Beach attracts many visitors. This wide, sandy beach extends for 1.25 miles and is perfect for an afternoon picnic. On the east shore, Cisco Beach is popular with scuba divers, where the water depth drops off quickly to 208 feet.

Nearby is a playground for nature lovers. Make sure you see it at least once during the fall, when aspens and maples are transformed in brilliant reds and golds. On the 1.5-mile hike to Spring Hollow, you will see fossils of sea plants and animals. For a more difficult hike, there is the 1.3-mile climb that winds up to Wind Caves. For hikes even closer to home, try the 4.2-mile Lakeside Trail or the Limber Pine Trail. You might also consider horseback riding when the season is right. Guided rides through Logan Canyon offer varied terrain, wildflowers, mountain streams and panoramic views of the forest.

Bird watchers will enjoy the Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge, a favorite stopping off place for white pelicans, egrets, herons and sandhill cranes. Another place to take the whole family is the Minnetonka Cave, a 2,000-foot-long limestone cave containing an impressive number of stalactites, stalagmites and banded travertine. You can tour its nine rooms from mid-June to Labor Day. When winter arrives, so does the famed Utah snow, and you can hit the slopes at the nearby Beaver Mountain ski area. Three double , 26 runs and 525 skiable acres are waiting for you at this quiet, family-owned resort. And more than 300 miles of groomed snowmobile trails begin right at WorldMark Bear Lake, with many more ungroomed trails near Logan Canyon.

During the summer, the Pickleville Playhouse in Garden City serves up fine outdoor theater with western cookouts. Don't miss the Logan Canyon Scenic Drive between Logan and Garden City. (Pick up a copy of the Logan Canyon brochure first at the Chamber of Commerce, which highlights 32 stops and sites along the way.) The drive begins 2.5 miles east of downtown Logan on Hwy 89 and culminates at the Bear Lake Overlook. Here you will discover a sweeping view of the lake and beyond. On a clear day from this spot, you can see Wyoming across the lake and Idaho to the north. Speaking of Idaho, you'll want to visit the new National Oregon/California Trail Center in Montpelier, just 30 miles north of Garden City. The large facility features a museum, art gallery, gift shop and tours led by costumed guides. The center will take you back 150 years by giving you an insider's look at what it was like to be with a wagon train bound for Oregon. ______Driving Directions From Salt Lake City: Drive north on I-15 toward Brigham City and take exit 362 Take US 89/91 to the city of Logan At Logan, follow Main St until you reach the sign for US 89/Bear Lake There is a bank and two gas stations at this intersection Turn right onto 400 N and continue approximately 40 miles through Logan Canyon At the next intersection (the lake will be in front of you and a Texaco station on the left), turn left Turn left into Harbor Village Take the first right, then a left at the “Y” before the lighthouse The check-in office is up the hill on the left
