May 2013 Applause! is the monthly recognition of significant achievements and contributions by staff, students and community partners at a York Region District School Board Public Board Meeting. Recognition of achievements is based on alignment with the organizational goals outlined by the Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan in combination with the criteria set out in Staff Awards and Student Awards policies. Work Experience Program The Work Experience Program is a unique learning opportunity providing on-the-job-training and valuable work experience to students with intellectual disabilities. Through the Work Experience Program, students develop independence, confidence and social skills while also building their personal strengths and individual abilities. The York Region District School Board values its employer partnerships and the opportunities provided for students to engage with the community in a meaningful way. Active Green + Ross Steve Rode has demonstrated a long-term commitment to the Work Experience Program by welcoming students into Active Green + Ross Tire and Auto Centre. He is dedicated to providing students with a platform to develop essential work skills vital to future success. He assesses student strengths and needs to individualize learning to achieve learning goals and highlight student abilities. Steve offers paid employment in the belief that students are valued members of society. Supercom Supercom, a large computer repair centre, has been an integral part of the Work Experience Program for more than ten years. Raymond Lee, Service Supervisor, has actively participated in the Work Experience Program by providing learning opportunities to students in Special Education classes. Students have been offered the opportunity to work in a variety of areas including repairs and office work. Supercom acknowledges hard work by offering paid employment to students who have attained a level of work readiness equivalent to individuals working in paid positions within the company. Dollarama Dollarama has partnered with the York Region District School Board’s Work Experience Program for approximately 15 years. Each school year, several local stores welcome students from special education programs to participate in work experience placements. These placements provide students with an opportunity to: • expand literacy and numeracy skills; • learn the importance of and become part of a team; and • develop self confidence and pride in their abilities. The following stores and management teams are recognized: Dollarama (Boxwood Plaza, Markham) Sara Bhikhiri and her team invited six students with intellectual disabilities to participate in a work placement at their store. Sarah ensures that the work schedule allows for one-on one time with each student each week. Applause! May 2013 Dollarama (Newmarket Plaza) Margaret Bradley and her team has partnered with York Region District School Board for many years. The team’s willingness and flexibility in providing positive learning experiences for students from Newmarket schools each year is greatly appreciated. Dollarama Store (Vaughan) Laurie Stringer has demonstrated a long-term commitment to the Work Experience Program by welcoming numerous students from Vaughan Secondary School into her store. For over six years, Laurie has provided a warm and welcoming working environment, hosting students of varying skills and abilities. Laurie’s vision, compassion and belief in student abilities is truly appreciated. Dollarama (Markham) Amjad Yassawi has been a community partner for over three years providing ample learning opportunities for York Region District School Board students. Dollarama (Richmond Hill) Edward It has provided a meaningful learning opportunity for the Work Experience student and treats the student as a staff member on his team. Dollarama (Thornhill) Edwin Sundardas and his team have partnered with the Work Experience Program for more than five years and continue to provide excellence in job training for students with disabilities. The staff is prepared to work with the varying strengths, needs and learning goals of each individual student to maximize their success. Dollarama Store (Vaughan) Over the past several years, Giovanna Pigliarolo has partnered with the work experience program and has welcomed several students into her store. The variety of tasks makes for a rich learning environment for the students. During the busy holiday season, Giovanna provided a paid work opportunity for one student. YORK REGION DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BOARD MEETING MINUTES - PUBLIC SESSION APRIL 8, 2013 The Board Meeting - Public Session of the York Region District School Board was held in the Board Room of the Education Centre, Aurora at 8:03 p.m. on Monday, April 8, 2013 with Chair A. DeBartolo presiding and the following members present; Trustees P. Adams-Luchowski, L. Carruthers, C. Chan, S. Geller, D. Giangrande, J. Hertz, J. Nathan, A. Tam, M. Van Beek and A. Yeung. Also in attendance: Student Trustees S. Shao and K. Thaker Regrets: Trustee N. Elgie APPROVAL OF AGENDA (*)1. Moved by A. Yeung, seconded by M. Van Beek: That the agenda be approved with the following amendment. • Recommendation #2 of the March 25, 2013 Chair’s Committee Minutes regarding the Notice of Motion to Amend the York Region District School Board Operational By-Law be removed from routine. - Carried - DECLARATION OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST Chair A. DeBartolo asked any trustee who has a direct or indirect pecuniary interest in any matter being discussed during the meeting to state their conflict and the nature thereof. No conflicts were declared by trustees at this time. RISE AND REPORT – AP RIL 8, 2013 BOARD MEETING – PRIVATE SESSION (*)2. Moved by J. Hertz, seconded by C. Chan: 1) That the York Region District School Board receive the minutes of the March 21, 2013 Property Management Committee Meeting for information. 2) That the York Region District School Board approve the recommendations in the Human Resource Services staff reports. Shao made the following remarks. “Madame Chair, Mr. Director, Trustees, Staff, Ladies and Gentlemen. With the March Break and Easter long weekend behind us, this is it, the final stretch for students and staff before the summer. Over the past few weeks, Kush and I have been diligently working on the Student Trustee Election process. We launched the application last week and we have already heard from numerous students showing interest in the role. This year’s application package, due on April 18th, requires
