  • Investing in Rivers Can Help PHL Bag ‘First World’ Status by Jonathan L
Investing in rivers can help PHL bag ‘First World’ status By Jonathan L. Mayuga JANUARY 29, 2017 | BUSINESS MIRROR In photo: An early morning scene at a fishing village on the Agusan River in the eastern part of Mindanao. Part One THE proper utilization of the country’s rivers and its raw water supply, a major economic resource in the Philippines, can provide the much-needed boost to help the country sustain growth and achieve the status of a First World economy, the country’s top environment official said. Citing the case of Singapore, Secretary Regina Paz L. Lopez of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (Denr) said properly managing the country’s rivers is the key to sustaining the country’s growth and development. The key to Singapore’s phenomenal economic growth, she said, was the cleaning of the Singapore River, allowing it to spur economic activities, generate income and provide employment through tourism. Following the footsteps of Singapore and other first-world economies, the Philippines should be able to sustain growth by optimizing the ecosystems services provided by rivers and its abundant supply of freshwater, Lopex said. “The key to all the other first- world economies was the cleaning of their rivers; from Germany to France, to Korea,” says Lopez, an environmental advocate who once led the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission, the agency tasked to rehabilitate one of the country’s most polluted. “So the recipe works.” The Denr, the agency mandated to manage the country’s natural wealth, is implementing various programs geared toward protecting and conserving the country’s rivers.

Tago range are here documented in a checklist, along with information on their distribution and conservation status. The list is based on a comprehensive field survey conducted by the authors in 2018 and 2019 and comprises 203 species belonging to 29 families and 89 genera. Of these species, 187 are ferns and 16 are lycophytes. Eighty-six species are epiphytes, 85 are terrestrial, 12 are tree ferns, 6 are hemiepiphytes, and 14 species have more than one growth form. The number of species constitutes about 19% and 33% of the total number of pteridophyte species in the Philippines and Mindanao Island, respectively. The highest species richness was observed in the upper montane rainforest. Seventeen species are classified as broadly distributed Philippine endemics whereas four species are endemic to Mindanao. One species (Alsophila commutata Mett.) was newly documented for the Philippines and three species [Pteris whitfordii Copel., Selliguea elmeri (Copel.) Ching, and Selliguea pyrolifolia (Goldm.) Pantaron Range in Bukidnon to determine the species richness, conservation status and microhabitat preferences. Field sampling was performed using a combination of belt transect, opportunistic and capture-mark release sampling techniques. Field investigations were done in the agro-ecosystem and montane forest with the elevation ranging from 1,100-1,550 masl. The study documented 18 anuran species belonging to seven families and 15 genera, and approximately 61 % (11 species) are Philippine endemics. Moreover, four (4) noteworthy Mindanao island endemic namely; Ansonia muelleri, Leptobrachium lumadorum, Megophrys stejnegeri, and Pulchrana grandocula. As to the conservation status, Limnonectes magnus was categorized as vulnerable. Majority of the anu-rans were observed near bodies of water such as ponds and streams while other species were collected in the ground microhabitat especially in the leaf litters and fallen and decaying logs. The result of the survey showed high species richness of anurans in Mt. Pantaron Range and more species are likely to be documented if the place is totally explored. Keywords: Mindanao Island, Pantaron Range, Amphibians, Endemism INTRODUCTION Anurans are biological indicator and more sensitive to the environment than other wildlife (Hopkins, 2007).
