Normally in May the Comish team and supporters would be looking forward ta cricket or the next season! The Cornwall R.F.U. and its supporters ail look forward to this Semi Final match, only 7 d ays after the Quarter Final played against Kent last Saturday. Today's game is only the Stll encounter between Cornwall and Cheshire and ail of the games have been in the last 18 years. The clea rest memory is the fine performance of the Cheshire Team on 18th April 1998 in the Final at Twickenllam when Cheshire were victors by 21 points to 14 and w ith 26 counties in this year's competition it is perhaps ironic that only one of last year 's fin alists can now get there in 1999. Cheshire today visit Redruth on the 3rd occasion, they have not been to another Cornish ground, in September 1981 in a friendly Cornwall won by 20 points to 3, and in the Thorn EMI County Championship fo rmat in November 1984 they beat Cornwall by 16 points to 9. In October 1983 Cornwall travelled to New Brighton and won by 20 points to nil. So before we start today the record is equaI, but Cheshire have won the County Championship 3 tinles to Cornwall 's 2 wins in 1908 and 1991. We ail expect a tough gam e today especially seeing how weil Cheshire beat Yorkshire last weekend by 40 points to 13. The Offi cers and Committee are most gratefuJ to the panel on Hon. Surgeons who support the county teams - last Saturday they were especially busy on behalf of the injured players and spectators who were taken ill at the match. The support of the Cornwall Air Ambulance, St. John's Ambulance and the West County Ambulance Trust were ail seen last Saturday. You w ill have noted that we have included a donation to the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust in today's programme priee. Thank you for your support of a vital Comish service run by charity. The collection for the John Kendall-Carpenter memorial Trust raised f354 last Saturday. The Union is gratefuJ to the Directors of Miller & Company and ta others: the Sports Shop at and William Rogers Insurance Services for the use of their premises fo r ticket sales fo r this match and aIso for last Saturday's loan of the ticket office by Vospers o f . The Union is pleased la receive Ihe sponsorship from Dales Renal/lt for loday's malch. No matter the result today, the Under 21 XV are already in the U21 Final on Saturday, 22nd May and the Cornwall XV will play the Allied Dunbar 2 w inners, probably Bristol - it will be decided tomorrow - at Tw ickenham on Sunday, 23rd May. TIckets will be available by post as indicated on the inside caver. If we can arrange any other sales points we w ill advise you via the media. The Officers and Committee of the CR.F.U. thank the sponsors, players and spectators for their support in 1998-99. Dr. C. V. Phillips (H all. Sec., C.R.EU.) DALES

BOX 22, CAMBORNE TR 14 BX P ":;"to the tY!Jille""ium - Col'"ish ~u9b!l BY RHOD MITCHELL, SPORTS EDITOR, THE WEST BRITON Cornwall today stand on the brink of a tenth appearance in the final of the County Championship and the chance to enter the new Millennium as champions of England. Just tWice, since Yorkshire won the first final back in 1889, have Cornwall triumphed - in 1908 against Durham and 83 years later in that amazing win at Twickenham over Yorkshire, when the county came back from the dead on a wave of emotion to c1inch a nerve·tingling extra time victory. For someone whose first recollections of watching Cornwall were back in the 1960's, when success was rare and winning the South West group a massive achievement, the 1990'S have been a heady decade for championship rugby in the Duchy. Even in the days of such great players as Roger Hosen, Richard Sharp, "Stack" Stevens and "Bonzo" Johns, Cornwall found it tough.

As a young boy 1 can still remember squeezing into a packed Redruth ground on 8 March 1969, along with 21,000 other Cornish supporters, only to see Cornwall lose 11-9 to Lancashire in the final and it was another 20 years before Cornwall reached the final again, only to lose to Durham at Twickenham. Now, hardly a season goes by when a trip to Twickenham has not been at least a strong possibility, and today's game against holders Cheshire is Cornwall's third successive semi·final. Rugby has come along way in the past few years with the advent of professional· ism transforming the sport. But one thing, thankfully, has not changed and that is the fact the the Cornish side will again proudly pull on their black and gold jerseys for no financial reward other than simply the honour of representing the county. Cornwall's team in fact includes many professional players, but whether they come from Fiji or Wales, it is the pride in representing Cornwall which counts for them today. Indeed, the importance of rugby to the county should not be underestimated. It is one of the few occasions that brings a "coming together' - a true One & Ali spirit. Cornwall has suffered many knocks in the past few years but its rugby has always been a source of pride and long may it continue. If the day ever comes when players do not care about the black and gold it would really hurt. We may not have the best players in the country, but arguably the most determined and committed. It would surely be a fitting end to the Millennium if Cornwall could return to Twickenham and Trelawny's Army once more take over the famous stadium in a couple of weeks time. With the Cornwall Under 21'S already there in their Tetley's Bitter County Championship final against Yorkshire and the following day a Cornwall XV taking on the Allied Dunbar 2 champions, it wou Id truly be a week·end to remember if Cornwall's senior si de come through today and avenge last season's final defeat by Cheshire. Come on Cornwall. CORNWALL CHESHIRE (Colou rs : Black & Gold) (C% urs: Bille & White Hoops, White Short s)
