Cast Biographies RILEY KEOUGH (Christine Reade) Riley Keough, 26, is one of Hollywood’s rising stars. At the age of 12, she appeared in her first campaign for Tommy Hilfiger and at the age of 15 she ignited a media firestorm when she walked the runway for Christian Dior. From a young age, Riley wanted to explore her talents within the film industry, and by the age of 19 she dedicated herself to developing her acting craft for the camera. In 2010, she made her big-screen debut as Marie Currie in The Runaways starring opposite Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. People took notice; shortly thereafter, she starred alongside Orlando Bloom in The Good Doctor, directed by Lance Daly. Riley’s memorable work in the film, which premiered at the Tribeca film festival in 2010, earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Milan International Film Festival in 2012. Riley’s talents landed her a title-lead as Jack in Bradley Rust Gray’s werewolf flick Jack and Diane. She also appeared alongside Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey in Magic Mike, directed by Steven Soderbergh, which grossed nearly $167 million worldwide. Further in 2011, she completed work on director Nick Cassavetes’ film Yellow, starring alongside Sienna Miller, Melanie Griffith and Ray Liota, as well as the Xan Cassavetes film Kiss of the Damned. As her camera talent evolves alongside her creative growth, so do the roles she is meant to play. Marjorie probably sounds like your classic target for a satire on a very specific slice of life in the Big Apple, with lots of geographically on the mark insider references. She is. Fortunately for actor-writer Charles Busch (himself a terrific and affectionate portrayer of archetypal females), Linda Lavin transcends the caricature image used to promote the show (a cartoon born-to-shop Marjorie popping out of a shopping bag spattered with banners for assorted cultural interests). -

8 TV Power Games: Friends and Law & Order There is no such thing as a one-man show | at least not in television: one feature that all TV shows have in common is the combination of a large number of diverse contributors: producers, scriptwriters, actors, and so on. This is illustrated in Exhibit 8.1, which depicts the links between key contributors to the making and selling of a TV show. Solid lines repre- sent some form of contractual relationship, whereas dashed lines represent non-contractual relationships of relevance for value creation and value distribution. As is the case with movies, pharmaceutical drugs, and other products, the distribution of TV show values is very skewed: many TV shows are worth relatively little, whereas a few shows generate a very high value: For example, at its peak Emmy Award-winning drama ER fetched $13 million per episode.1 How does the value created by successful shows get divided among its various contrib- utors, in particular actors, producers and networks? Who gets the biggest slice of the big pie? In this chapter, I address this question by looking at two opposite extreme cases in terms of relative negotiation power: Law & Order and Friends. FROM GIRLFRIEND TO GAMER: NEGOTIATING PLACE IN THE HARDCORE/CASUAL DIVIDE OF ONLINE VIDEO GAME COMMUNITIES Erica Kubik A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2010 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Amy Robinson Graduate Faculty Representative Kristine Blair Donald McQuarie ii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor The stereotypical video gamer has traditionally been seen as a young, white, male; even though female gamers have also always been part of video game cultures. Recent changes in the landscape of video games, especially game marketers’ increasing interest in expanding the market, have made the subject of women in gaming more noticeable than ever. This dissertation asked how gender, especially females as a troubling demographic marking difference, shaped video game cultures in the recent past. This dissertation focused primarily on cultures found on the Internet as they related to video game consoles as they took shape during the beginning of the seventh generation of consoles, between 2005 and 2009. Using discourse analysis, this dissertation analyzed the ways gendered speech was used by cultural members to define not only the limits and values of a generalizable video game culture, but also to define the idealized gamer. This dissertation found that video game cultures exhibited the same biases against women that many other cyber/digital cultures employed, as evidenced by feminist scholars of technology. Specifically, female gamers were often perceived as less authoritative of technology than male gamers. This was especially true when the concept “hardcore” was employed to describe the ideals of gaming culture. -

The Richard Niles- Charles Busch Papers Collection #006 Marymount Manhattan College 221 East 71st Street New York, New York 10021 November 1, 2012 Processed by Mary Elizabeth Brown 1 These papers are known by the names of the two individuals most closely associated with them. They concern the career of the performer and playwright Charles Busch. They were collected, and deposited at the Marymount Manhattan College archives, by long-time faculty member Richard Niles, Ph.D. Professor Niles received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, his Master of Fine Arts from Brooklyn College of the City of New York, and his doctorate, in 1993, from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. He first appeared in Marymount Manhattan College’s catalog in 1991-1992 as an Adjunct Instructor in the Theatre Arts. He advanced to Assistant Professor in the 1992-1994 catalog. The 1994-1995 catalog was the first to note his doctorate. He advanced to Associate Professor in the 1998-1999 catalog, and to Professor in the 2005-2006 catalog. Professor Niles wrote his dissertation, and several other papers and scholarly presentations, on Charles Busch. Born in New York City August 23, 1954, Busch spent his early years in Hartsdale, New York. His mother died when he was seven years old, and soon thereafter his aunt, Lillian Blum, took him to New York City to live. Busch graduated from New York’s High School of Music and Art, and majored in drama at Northwestern University.
