The presented article is aimed at presenting a few selected examples of small European historic towns whose properly protected cultural heritage considerably contributes to their development in the 21st century. The issue of protection and revalorisation of Polish towns, particularly the smaller ones, is relevant nowadays. Historic heritage seems to be a burden for local authorities and residents because very often they are not aware of how it could contribute to the multidirectional development of their towns. The local inhabitants and authorities of small historic towns in Western European countries respect their heritage much more than Poles, as they associate it with the idea of sustainable development, “place specificity”, and finally, with an opportunity for development, treating cultural heritage as a basis for economic progress and building new and modern infrastructure. It is worth drawing attention here, that sustainable development denotes changing the reality in such a way that the development would optimally satisfy the needs of modern man, without violating the needs of future generations. The testimony to the potential of the cultural heritage of historic towns in the context of their modern development is borne by the towns whose authorities and inhabitants were able to utilise their past for building their future.     The Daily Life of the Village and Country Jews in Hessen from Hitler's Ascent to Power to November 1938 Menahem Kaufman Introduction This article deals with Jewish life in the state of Hessen (Volksstaat Hessen) in the district of Hessen-Nassau (part of Prussia at that time) and in the district of Kurhessen and Waldeck during the Weimar period. We may surmise that patterns of Jewish life in southern and western parts of Germany during the period in question did not differ strikingly from those in Hessen. A small number of Jewish families lived in some of the villages in the region; they were either too few in number to constitute a community, or managed to establish small though organized communities within their own synagogue. In small towns with several dozen Jewish families, local communities sponsored a number of communal institutions, which functioned quite well before 1933, and made efforts to maintain their patterns of communal life even during the period around which this article revolves. The present study draws upon a number of sources: first, the original documentary material preserved in the archives of the villages and small towns1; secondly, publications that discuss the Jews in various localities and districts of Hessen; and, thirdly, letters and oral testimonies of Jewish Holocaust survivors and of several non-Jews.     The Mainzer Family of Heppenheim The Early Years Here in this house – in Friedrichstrasse – they lived and worked for almost 30 years: the families of Jakob and Berthold Mainzer. Just a short distance away stood their parents’ house – with the original shop. Mordechai Mainzer and his wife Chawa settled there around 1800 after moving to Heppenheim from nearby Lorsch. They lived in this house in Wilhelmstrasse until 1907. It was Mordechai’s son Jakob who laid the original foundations of a successful retail business. Then Jakob’s extremely industrious son Wolf, a.k.a. Wilhelm Mainzer, took over his father’s textile shop. Wolf and his wife Babette had nine children. Their sons Jakob and Berthold joined the business; first Jakob, then seven years later Berthold. The range of available goods in their shop grew. The building became too small for the brothers’ plans and ideas. In 1906 they commissioned the renowned architect Heinrich Metzendorf to build a new store. It was to stand here in the Friedrichstrasse, known to Heppenheimers as “Bachgass”. Living and working space, workshop, sales and exhibition rooms – everything was to fit under one roof. In 1907 the spacious new building was ready to move into. A wide range of products was on offer to the people of Heppenheim and beyond. They continued to trade in textiles, but also added a comprehensive selection of furniture. There were also fitting rooms, needlework rooms, offices, a bank, and an emigration agency. 1911 was an anniversary – the store turned 50. Jakob Mainzer married Berta Morgenthau from Crumstadt in 1906.

The Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives (MFAA) Section recovered Nazi-looted works of art and artifacts from various storage areas and shipped the objects to one of four U.S. central collecting points, including Wiesbaden. In order to research restitution claims, MFAA officers gathered intelligence reports, interrogation reports, captured documents, and general information regarding German art looting. The Wiesbaden records are part of the “Ardelia Hall Collection” in Records of United States Occupation Headquarters, World War II, Record Group (RG) 260.
