Classic rock dwellers include peregrine, eagle owl, rockthrush, snowfinch and alpine swift. The presentation focuses on the biology, causes of threat as well as conservation measures taken by the national park concerning the species golden eagle, wallcreeper, crag martin and ptarmigan. Birds breeding in the rocks might not be that high in number, but their survival is all the more fascinating and worth protecting as such! Abstract: Peru is an ecologically diverse country, with 84 life zones in the Holdridge system and 18 ecological regions (including two marine). 1910 molluscan species have been recorded. The highest number corresponds to the sea: 570 gastropods, 370 bivalves, 36 cephalopods, 34 polyplacoforans, 3 monoplacophorans, 3 scaphopods and 2 aplacophorans (total 1018 species). The most diverse families are Veneridae (57spp.), Muricidae (47spp.), Collumbellidae (40 spp.) and Tellinidae (37 spp.). Biogeographically, 56 % of marine species are Panamic, 11 % Peruvian and the rest occurs in both provinces; 73 marine species are endemic to Peru. Land molluscs include 763 species, 2.54 % of the global estimate and 38 % of the South American esti- mate. The most biodiverse families are Bulimulidae with 424 spp., Clausiliidae with 75 spp. and Systrophiidae with 55 spp. In contrast, only 129 freshwater species have been reported, 35 endemics (mainly hydrobiids with 14 spp. The paper includes an overview of biogeography, ecology, use, history of research efforts and conser- vation; as well as indication of areas and species that are in greater need of study. -

This species has never been recorded from specimens other than the types, and its distribution and anatomy have remained essentially unknown. The genitalia and radula morphology are documented here for the first time and employed to re-assess the systematic position of this species: the unique morphological characters of T. horrida are a penis similar in length to the vagina, a small and triangular penial verge, gametolytic organs extending as far as the albumen gland, head wart present, and unicuspid triangular radula teeth. -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: PATTERNS IN DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF BENTHIC MOLLUSCS ALONG A DEPTH GRADIENT IN THE BAHAMAS Michael Joseph Dowgiallo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Marjorie L. Reaka-Kudla Department of Biology, UMCP Species richness and abundance of benthic bivalve and gastropod molluscs was determined over a depth gradient of 5 - 244 m at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas by deploying replicate benthic collectors at five sites at 5 m, 14 m, 46 m, 153 m, and 244 m for six months beginning in December 1993. A total of 773 individual molluscs comprising at least 72 taxa were retrieved from the collectors. Analysis of the molluscan fauna that colonized the collectors showed overwhelmingly higher abundance and diversity at the 5 m, 14 m, and 46 m sites as compared to the deeper sites at 153 m and 244 m. Irradiance, temperature, and habitat heterogeneity all declined with depth, coincident with declines in the abundance and diversity of the molluscs. Herbivorous modes of feeding predominated (52%) and carnivorous modes of feeding were common (44%) over the range of depths studied at Lee Stocking Island, but mode of feeding did not change significantly over depth. One bivalve and one gastropod species showed a significant decline in body size with increasing depth. Analysis of data for 960 species of gastropod molluscs from the Western Atlantic Gastropod Database of the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) that have ranges including the Bahamas showed a positive correlation between body size of species of gastropods and their geographic ranges. There was also a positive correlation between depth range and the size of the geographic range. -

For most people, acquaintance with mollusks began with empty shells. These shells often delight the eye with a variety of shapes and colors. Conchology studies the mollusk shells and this science dates back to the 17th century. However, modern science - malacology is the study of mollusks as whole organisms. Today more and more people are interacting with ocean - divers, snorkelers, beach goers - all of them often find in the seas not empty shells, but live mollusks - living shells, whose appearance is significantly different from museum specimens. This book serves as a tool for identifying such animals. The book covers the region from the Red Sea to Hawaii, Marshall Islands and Guam. Schileykula maculata n. sp. from the castle of Kale (Gümüşhane Prov., north-eastern Turkey) is characterized by a ribbed shell, relatively bulging whorls, a sharp parietal callus and weak lamellae. The mantle bears large black spots, and the retractor muscle of the penis, which is fused with the proximal part of the epiphallus, a feature that has not been observed in other species of the genus so far. INTRODUCTION Up to the moment more than one hundred species and subspecies of Neniinae are known from Central and South America. They are incorporated into 22 genera and subgenera, almost exclusively based on characters of the shells. Only little is known of the anatomy of the animals (Binney, 1871; Binney & Bland, 1871; Baker, 1961; Hesse, 1925; Scott, 1954; Loosjes, 1957; Pilsbry, 1926; Polinski, 1922; Zilch, 1953, 1959). These authors described the radula and/or the genital organs of one or several species. Thus from eleven species the radula has been described and from five the genital apparatus. By the courtesy of Prof. Dr. W. Weyrauch we were able to study the anatomical features of a relatively large number (38) of Peruvian and Argentine Neniinae. We wish to express our most cordial thanks to him for his generosity and also to Dr. B. Hubendick, who provided us with a sample of Nenia tridens (Chemnitz) from Puerto Rico. In Thiele's (1929/31) classification the American Neniinae are grouped into three genera, Nenia, Peruinia and Temesa, based on characters of the shells and of the radula. It turned out impossible to fit the information we found, into this system as it indicates the presence of many more units. In this survey we will follow Zilch's (1960) classification, which enumerates a number of genera and subgenera, based on conchological characters, although the order will be altered according to the results obtained (conf. -

References . 104 Revision der Tonnoidea (Caenogastropoda, Gastropoda) aus dem Miozän der Paratethys und paläobiogeographische Folgerungen Zusammenfassung Die im Miozän der Paratethys vertretenen Gastropoden der Überfamilie Tonnoidea werden beschrieben und diskutiert. Insgesamt können 24 Arten nachgewiesen werden. Tonnoidea weisen generell eine ungewöhnliche weite geographische und stratigraphische Verbreitung auf, wie sie bei anderen Gastropoden unbekannt ist. Dementsprechend sind die paratethyalen Arten meist auch in der mediterranen und der atlantischen Bioprovinz vertreten. Einige Arten treten zuerst im mittleren Miozän der Paratethys auf. Insgesamt dokumentiert die Verteilung der tonnoiden Gastropoden in der Parate- thys einen starken klimatischen Einfluss. -

The phylogeny of cassoidean gastropods is reviewed, incorporating most of the biological and palaeontological data from the literature. Several characters have been checked personally and some new data are presented and included in the cladistic analysis. The Laubierinioidea, Calyptraeoidea and Capuloidea are used as outgroups. Twenty-three apomorphies are discussed and used to define cassoid relations at the subfamily level. A classification is presented in which only three families are recognised. The Ranellidae contains the subfamilies Bursinae, Cymatiinae and Ranellinae. The Pisanianurinae is removed from the Ranellidae and attributed to the Laubierinioidea.The Cassidae include the Cassinae, Oocorythinae, Phaliinae and Tonninae.
