Wrestlers Break out of Vault for Archives Film Night Edmonton April 9, 2010 Wrestlers break out of vault for Archives film night Edmonton... On Friday, April 16, some of the toughest men to ever wear tights will invade Edmonton’s Metro Cinema for the 25th Annual Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) Film Night Full Nelson edition. Film Night Full Nelson offers the public a relentless flurry of thrills from the PAA’s vaults, including: Ray and Bud Osborne, Edmonton’s Tag Team Championship wrestlers, and other wrestling greats of the day in Contact Sports’ 1970s TV program, Super Stars of Wrestling; Opinion poll: is wrestling a true sport, or is it phoney? John and Jane Q. Public weigh in at Westmount Shoppers’ Park, 1970; A 1958 clip from Wrestling at Ringside featuring a provocative commercial for Cal’s Menswear, live from the ring; and, Spontaneous Wrestling - home movie and amateur film clips from 1928-1941, with no holds barred. Live and in person: Mr. Beefy Goodness. On hand will be western Canadian pro-wrestler Vance Nevada (a.k.a. Mr. Beefy Goodness) to sign books and photos and meet with fans. Nevada is the author of the recently published Wrestling in the Canadian West, a celebration of more than 100 years of professional wrestling in western Canada. Film Night Full Nelson shows at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at Metro Cinema in the Citadel Theatre, 9828-101A Avenue, Edmonton. Tickets are available at the door only. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. There will be door prizes. Archives Film Night 2010 is dedicated to the memory of Wrestler William “Bud” Osborne, who died June 21, 2009. April 9, 2010 The Provincial Archives of Alberta 25th Annual Film Night Superstars of Wrestling, Contact Sports TV clips, 1970s In 2008, The Provincial Archives of Alberta received a donation of eight videos from Edmonton wrestler Ray Osborne. The tapes were found to hold some of the first broadcast episodes of Contact Sports’ program, Super Stars of Wrestling. Edmonton’s Ray and Bud Osborne, three-time winners of the National Wrestling Alliance International Tag Team Championship Title, appear in the programs along with Killer Kowalski, Luis Martinez, The Mongols, Sailor White, Dino Bravo and Kurt Von Hess. Sports Clips and Wrestling at Ringside, CFRN-TV clips, 1970 and 1958 The Provincial Archives of Alberta’s CFRN TV collection includes 647 films and videos dating from 1958 to 1986. CFRN was one of the first television broadcasters in Alberta and is now an affiliate of CTV. A selection of local wrestling footage will be screened, featuring a 1970 segment at Westmount Shoppers’ Park where an announcer asks the burning question: “Is wrestling a true sport, or is it phoney?” Also included is the 1958 program Wrestling at Ringside featuring a provocative commercial for Cal’s Menswear, live from the ring. It’s not the WWF’s responsibility to raise them kids. It’s no worse than watching a movie or watching a soap opera or watching television. It’s entertainment. It’s entertainment. Not many people know this, but I’ve always considered myself an artist of sorts. Ever since I was a young kid, I invariably find myself passing the time by doodling, drawing, and, on occasion, even painting. In the space between my paper and pencil, and in those moments when inspiration would strike, my imagination would run amok and these bigger-than-life personas - football players and comic book characters and, of course, professional wrestlers - would come to life. I wasn’t aware of this until much later, but for all those years my mother would quietly steal away my drawings, saving them for all prosperity, and perhaps giving her a way to relive all of those memories of me as a child. That’s exactly what happened to me when she showed me those old sketches of Iron Man and Walter Payton and Fred Flintstone and Hulk Hogan. I found myself instantly transported back to a time where things were simpler and characters were real and the art was pure. I get a lot of really similar feelings when I look at the incredible art that Rob Schamberger has shared with 2 foreward us all. Rob’s passion for art and for professional wrestling struck me immediately as someone that has equally grown to love and appreciate both, and by Adam Pearce truth be told I am extremely jealous of his talents.

    “Wrestling for a Blessing” The Ninth Sunday after Pentecost August 2, 2020 Genesis 32:22-31 ~ Romans 9:1-5 ~ Matthew 14:13-21 A few weeks before our marriage, John’s “soon to be best man” took us to see a professional wrestling match. I don’t know if it was George’s not so subtle warning to John about what he might have in store if he went through with the wedding, but it was a night I will always remember. It was a diverse audience, but mostly the working poor … those who competed with one another every day for the crumbs of jobs that fell from the rich folks table. Often at each other’s throats, they were united that night by the pageantry unfolding before them. Each match had the same basic plot … the good guy … clean-cut … fancy costume … handsomely coifed hair / the bad guy … unshaven … disheveled costume … stringy hair. They even had great names to demonstrate this good guy/bad guy boundary … “Dusty Rhodes” (good guy) … “Dirty Dick Murdoch,” (bad guy) … “Nature Boy Ric Flair” (good guy) … “Killer Kowalski” (you guessed it … bad guy). During each match the referee was continually distracted … talking to the timekeepers or arguing with the bad guy’s manager … while the bad guy pulled the good guy’s hair or beat him over the head with a chair. Occasionally the referee might actually catch the bad guy in the act and let him off with a lame warning, or worse, warn both of the wrestlers at the same time as if they were equally guilty … the way you always do if you have kids.
