Along with the boys were 3 Womens games featuring the newest team to the WRL family the Titahi Bay Marlins and the Wainui and Randwick teams. Pool A featured 3 premier teams in Wainui, Te Aroha and the Hunters joined by the Trentham Titans and the Brothers team. Pool B saw Upper Hutt & Petone up against Hunters#2 , Si-Fe-e and Te Awakairangi. Hot and dusty conditions combined with very hard grounds meant that hydration and team rotation were going to be keys to success with the eventual finalists fronting for their 6th match on the day. With only the top 2 from each pool advancing to the semis every game was important as was ensuring a good points differential. Wainui qualified first undefeated in Pool A after close games against Te Aroha and Hunters and were able to put the feet up and watch the battle for 2nd spot between those two teams in the last match of pool play. It was the Eels that prevailed 19-5 to earn a semi-final berth. Pool B saw the hastily drawn together Te Awakairangi top the table undefeated with comprehensive victories in all but the match against pool runner up Si-Fe-e where they managed a close 17-11 victory. The semi-final match ups were both hard fought battles with Wainuiomata and Te Awakairangi continuing their winning ways. Wainui lead by Dom Bartels and ably assisted by Marvin Karawana and big Frank Patea managed to hang tough and defeat a spirited Si-Fe-e side 21- 17 to advance to the final. On field 2 Te Awakairangi with Quentin Kepa at the helm and former junior Orca Tyson Tamakaha setting the field alight Winner of the Juggler sprint. Saita Tuaoi had a narrow 18-12 victory over the fancied Te Aroha Eels. from Te Awakairangi A match worthy of a final ensued and it was Wainuiomata that prevailed to defeat a gallant Te Awakairangi to claim the clubs first ever victory for the trophy. The trophy was presented by Nardo’s eldest son Jordan following words of thanks from Earl Vaá on behalf of the Vaá family. The Michael “Juggler “ Sharp sprint was won by Saita Tuaoi from Te Awakairangi whislt Frank Patea from Wainuiomata was named Dirty Man player of the tournament. The women’s matches whislt billed as friendlies were tough uncompromising encounters as the new girls on the scene the Marlins strutted their stuff for the first time. They scored the first try of their match against Randwick with Sherri Burgess, no relation to Sam, creating history for the club. Randwick eventually prevailed 19-4. The 2nd match for the Marlins saw them leading Wainui 12-10 with just minutes left but weren’t able to hold back a fast winning Lioness team which won 21-12. The final match for the girls was a 13 all draw between Wainuiomata and Randwick. A hearty congratulation to the Wainui club for the day and to the referees for their support including Rodger Burt who wore the pink for the first time.
