The 4REAL Story: Sol Guy and Josh Thome, Founders and Creators, Direct Current Media & the 4REAL TV Series When the TV series 4REAL premiered this year on the CW Television Network in the US, on MTV/Canada and globally on National Geographic Channels International in 166 countries and 34 languages, it marked the culmination of a five-year business partnership and more than 25 years of friendship for the show’s creators, Sol Guy, 35, and Josh Thome, 36. 4REAL, hosted by Sol Guy, takes celebrity guests on adventures around the world to connect with young leaders who, under extreme circumstances, are effecting real change on some of the most pressing issues of our time. Josh and Sol's story begins in the early 1970's in the Kootenay mountains of British Columbia. Their parents, who were friends, were socially minded individuals who instilled in their children a strong sense of social responsibility. "Our parents were original back-to-the land hippies. As kids, we grew up with very little material wealth, no television, not even electricity or running water," Josh says. "My family's mode of transportation was by horse." Josh and Sol went to school together, skateboarding and playing sports after class. After high school, they parted ways. Josh left for California to follow his passion for environmental education and advocacy. Sol went to Vancouver and entered the music scene. "As the only black family in the mountains, I was always trying to figure out how I fit in," Sol says. "When I got to Vancouver, I found a whole diverse community of people connected by hip hop culture. That was it for me. I was hip hop. Hip hop was me." Sol and some friends started a group called Rascalz, which quickly became successful in the global hip hop scene. Next, he created his own independent record label, Figure IV Entertainment, and went on to develop the careers of Rascalz, k-os, and Kardinal Offishall. Today, Sol is credited with developing the urban music market in Canada. Sol's passion for hip hop eventually led him to New York City where he went on to become one of the top young executives in the music industry. As International Director of Artist Development for Arista Records, he took artists such as Usher, Puff Daddy, and Outkast on tours around the world. He also worked closely with Lauryn Hill, India Arie, The Roots, Dead Prez, B.I.G.,The Wu- Tang Clan and many more. In 2001, the Rascalz were invited to Sierra Leone to be part of a documentary about the nine- year civil war, which had just ended. The war was waged primarily over diamond industry control. "That experience straight up changed my life," Sol says. "The beauty of the country and its people, coupled with the harsh and tragic reality of war, blew my mind." Meanwhile back in New York City, mainstream hip hop had become all about "bling bling," Sol says. "People were covered in diamonds and I had just held a six-month-old baby who had lost her arm over diamonds. The culture I loved had become completely disconnected from its roots. It had gone commercial. I knew I couldn't continue on as usual with what I was doing before." After 10 years in the business, Sol quit the record industry - and reconnected with Josh. During their years apart, Josh had been busy mobilizing hundreds of thousands of young people on critical environmental and social issues. "Growing up in the beautiful wilderness of B.C. gave me an intimate understanding of the ecosystem," Josh says. "When I saw it mindlessly being destroyed, I was inspired to do whatever I could to change that." Josh's 18 years of experience in environmental advocacy and educational programming began in high school when he started an environmental club. He networked with other young people to organize a conference that spawned the nationwide Environmental Youth Alliance involving over 60,000 students within its first year. This experience led him to help build similar networks around the world through multimedia outreach tours and follow-up organizing. In 1992, Josh presented at a United Nations event on youth, the environment and education and was contracted by the Clinton administration to appropriate grants to environmental youth projects. He received the Sierra Club President's award for his work. With sponsorship from the prestigious organization Environmental Defense in New York City, Josh developed the Student Action Network. In 1996, in his first video, CONNECT, hosted by Michael Stipe of the music group R.E.M., Josh interviewed outstanding young leaders around the world. The video was broadcast globally as MTV's Earth Day Special and generated significant traffic to the website it promoted. This experience inspired Josh with the idea of a TV series featuring these young leaders coupled with a website to further engage audiences and empower initiatives. In 2001 Josh and Sol met up in New York and started exchanging ideas for leveraging their connections with global youth networks and media. Together they created Direct Current Media, a multimedia production company that combines socially relevant and commercially viable content to effect social and economic progress. Next Sol and Josh embarked on a three-year journey that took them allover the world. They connected with young leaders, recorded their stories, filmed and created various projects that would become the development and foundation of their TV series 4REAL. Using the footage from their travels, they started to pitch 4REAL to networks. One of Canada's top writers, producers, and directors, Chris Haddock (creator of Da Vinci's Inquest and Intelligence) quickly took interest and offered to become 4REAL's Executive Producer. With Haddock's support they were able to start building their core team and brought on their siblings Josh's brother Jade and Sol's sister, Shoshana. Jade was a successful web engineer, and photographer. Shoshana, was an seasoned award-winning journalist, producing for NBC's Dateline with Tom Brokaw. They also brought on a childhood friend, Melahnie Moodie, a multilingual, international educator. In 2008, 4REAL aired in Canada on CTV and MTV Canada, globally on National Geographic Channels International in 166 countries and 34 languages, and in the U.S. on The CW channel. In addition, they have built 4REAL.com, a dynamic partner website for the series and a hub for people interested in art, culture and social change. Josh and Sol received the 2008 National Geographic Emerging Explorers award for their work with 4REAL and have been invited to present at the United Nations on several occasions. "We've come a long way," Sol says. "But in many respects we feel like we're finally at the starting line of why we set out to do this and that's for people to be inspired by the leaders we feature and for the leaders to gain more exposure and support for their amazing work."
