This paper compiles an updated checklist of the Sicilian Cassidinae and Cryptocephalini species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae and Cryptocephalinae) starting from a critical bibliographic screening and adding new material, mainly collected by the first author in the last few decades. A total of 61 species is reported, withnew data for many rarely collected taxa. The provided data expand the known distribution of many uncommon species in Sicily. Two species are recorded for the first time: Cassida inopinata Sassi and Borowiec, 2006 and Cryptocephalus (Cryptocephalus) bimaculatus Fabricius, 1781 and two uncertain presences are confirmed: Cassida deflorata Suffrian, 1844 and Cassida nobilis Linné, 1758. The presence of other sixteen species is considered questionable and needs further confirmation. 1. Introduction Leaf beetles are all phytophagous Coleoptera. They are usually of a rather stout build, with a rounded or oval shape, often brightly coloured or with metallic hues. Worldwide some 32500 species in 2114 genera of Chrysomelidae have been described (Slipi´ nski´ et al. 2011), the majority of which occur in the tropics as is the case with numerous other Coleoptera families. Currently, the leaf beetle subfamily Cassidinae comprises the tortoise beetles (Cassidinae s. str.) and the hispine beetles (Hispinae s. str.) (Borowiec 1995; Hsiao and Windsor 1999; Chaboo 2007). So far, the Cassidinae list about 6300 described species within more than 340 genera, being the second most speciose subfamily of leaf beetles (Borowiec and Swi˛etoja´ nska´ 2014). -

A review of Palaearctic species of the subgenus Pachybrachis CHEVROLAT, 1837 s. str., an illustrated key to their determination and complete bibliography concerning discussed nominal taxa are given. A new synonymy is established: Pachybrachys lepineyi Pic, 1955 = Pachybrachis simius MArseul, 1875, a few futher taxa are tentatively indicated as suspected synonyms. IntrodUCtIon Subgenus Pachybrachis CHEVROLAT sensu stricto is a large group comprising over 350 species out of which about 200 inhabit western hemisphere, the remaining species are distributed mainly in Palaearctic area. the second subgenus, Chloropterus REY, 1883, small and restricted to W Mediterranean area does not create such problems and it is here not discussed in detail. A large number of species, considerable individual variability, and very scattered bibliography, as well as type and comparative specimens, create great difficulties not only in determination of species but also in preliminary grouping of materials. this work is devoted to Palaearctic species only, because this area is characterized by a quick growth of number of described species. the continuous creation of new isolated descriptions requires at least preliminary synthetic work. It is worth mentioning that out 214 AndrZej warChAłoWSKI of 132 species discussed in this paper, half of them were described after the year 1950, most often based on very short series of specimens or even on one specimen only. -

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4. -

A preliminary annotated checklist of the Chrysomelidae of the Baja California peninsula, Mexico is presented based on literature records and the examination of approximately 16,000 chrysomelid specimens. Seven subfamilies and 218 described species have been identified. Ninty-one species are recognized from the Baja California peninsula for the first time. Twenty-nine species are listed as endemic. An additional 128 morphospecies have been identified as undescribed or not yet associated with described species of mainland Mexico or the United States. Adult host plant associations have been identified for approximately 120 species or 35% of the leaf beetle fauna of the region. Each of the 218 described species is associated with the eight plant communities as outlined by Wiggins (1980). Two dominant subfamilies comprise 76% of the leaf beetle fauna: Galerucinae, 87 species (40%) and Cryptocephalinae, 78 species (36%). The following new combinations are proposed: Neolema californica (Heinze, 1927), transferred from Lema Fabricius, 1798; Pseudoluperus histrio (Horn, 1895), transferred from Keitheatus Wilcox, 1965, and Diachus peninsularis (Schaeffer, 1906), transferred from Triachus J. L. LeConte, 1880. Lema peninsulae Crotch, 1873, is removed from synonymy with L. -
